I don’t think macOS is the answer either. Start with multi profile support and a better file system. Limit it to the pro if you need to justify it somehow.

^This, and include a ZSH / Bash terminal for power users to access whatever parts of the file system are not sandboxed, maybe with some ability to install third-party console apps.

Basically Apple needs to make it easier to enable professional workflows on the iPad Pro that don’t require jumping through an endless maze of hacks and hoops.

iPads make great cash registers and such.

The product has matured. How often does Oster come out with an innovative new toaster?

iPads are more a commodity than exciting anymore. It’s hard to pour resources into something that really generates such little excitement for anyone but a small group of users.

Mine just laid around. Decided to trade it in and get a Best Buy card for it during holidays while it’s still worth something. Can’t see any more iPads in this house. Not even the kids want these.
Here’s an honest question for all of those who found themselves not using a 12.9-inch iPad Pro… was it because of the limitations of any and all iPads and iPadOS… or because it was a 12.9-inch model?

I ask because I had a 12.9-inch iPad Pro and found it too heavy when using it in any orientation other than on a table or desk with a keyboard. I traded it in on a 14-inch MacBook Pro - but found myself never using that at all.

When I have heavy lifting to do, I prefer a desktop - iMacs for a long time and now a Mac Studio. I find pretty much everything else I can do on a 10.9 or 11-inch iPad. If the new iPad Airs and Pros really do improve in terms of capability, I could be tempted to try a 12.9 or 13-inch model again.

It would be killer to have an M3 Pro iPad Pro, with HDMI external display support.

Did you know that, for M1 and M2 iPads, Apple purposely disables 4K HDMI output by software? It only supports 4k external displays output on thuderbolt capable monitors. iOS limits HDMI monitors to 1080p.

Maybe someone finds a way to fix that.

I didn't know that. I wonder what financial reason is behind that? Protecting the laptops and Apple TV?

Most of you? This is macrumors. You guys complaining is not indicative of the average apple user.

the average apple user is not on macrumors, so there's your proof.
If only average users aren't complaining, then it's already proves that iPad series is only good for normal people which is why iPad series need to be minimized and remove iPad Pro from blocking Mac to make tablet style.

Clearly, you dont know what you are talking about.

I don't own a 12.9 but the reason is similar to that:
It's unwieldy as a tablet, but I'd be willing to make that compromise if it could replace my laptop.

If I had a 12.9 iPad Pro that COULD replace a laptop, I'd probably end up with a mini as well for use where the 12.9 was inconvenient.

But I'm definitely not buying two tablets and a laptop, so given I have a smaller iPad (currently an 11" air) and a laptop (MBP 14") the 12.9 just doesn't fit, considering how damn expensive it is.

Re: desktop vs. laptop. I generally prefer desktops for heavy stuff, but my 14" pro is a dual purpose work/home machine. It goes everywhere I do. A desktop won't do that for me. the 14" pro is powerful enough and silent enough to work as a portable desktop - for me.

Remember Jobs was very impressed with Sony.
Every year releasing a refreshed product with "just enough new" to tempt users to upgrade.

Consumers have been conditioned to want new stuff.
It's a habit we should break.
It's started with more people keeping phones for three years and not two.

Hardware that's a couple years old still works pretty damn well.
In a mature market, it's harder and harder to convince people to buy again.
Hence the move to a new product group and growing the services section for content to consume.

iPad series are just bigger version of iPhone. Why better treatments?
An ipad is more than just a bigger iPhone.

1. I can use my iPad for reading documents/books which is better than my iphone 15 pro max and certainly more comfortable than Mac

2. Watching movies and videos in better than my iPhone and in bed, better than Mac.

3. Drawing is way better on iPad than a Mac and for my work i do for school, it is easier to use my iPad than a Mac which is far heavier and less easy to port around.

4. If you have a Mac Studio, an iPad works better as a secondary screen for it with a keyboard and mouse.

An iPad and Macbooks do have overlaps yes but there are people who prefer iPads over Macs. If you are a heavy power user, I recommend a Macbook anyday. If you are a moderate user who is heavy into media consumption with some productivity I recommend an iPad.

I can do most things I want on my iPad that I can on my mac but maybe not as seamless but i dont feel like I am missing out using my ipad but I dont get the same ease of use with my Mac that I do with my ipad when I am wanting to lay in bed or if I am in class/work handling things.

And that's all. You just agree that iPad series have limited uses. Clearly, that's why iPad did not sold for several years.

iPad has sold well (Certainly more than Android tablets).

I told you MY NEEDS and MY PURPOSES. They don't have to match your needs or wants because we are not the same, Mate.

Another example: a prime example actually is the door salesman who came to my parent's house yesterday trying to push some kind of bug repellan/extermination service.

It makes sense that he would have a powerful product like an iPad Pro in the field for power and portability than walking around carrying Macbook.

Which leads me to a point: 4g/5g connectivity which Macs do not have and if they did have would drive the price up even higher.

That's a big reason for me to use an iPad when i am in the middle of nowhere vs a Macbook that i still have to use my phone as a hotspot for.

iPhones serve their purpose. Just like iPads. Just like Macs.

I don't need to make one try to be the other.

Just because an iPad does not meet your needs, doesnt make it a bad choice.

Another example: We had to go to a crime scene for my law clinic i work for. Do you think I can easily take photos and transmit them with my Mac? Nope. My iPad came in handy.

When i need more power such as when I need to edit videos for my content i create or for music, then I use my Macbook.

When I want media consumption or a little more power than my Phone can give me but I dont need macbook power, i use an iPad.

My phone complements them both...because both have their plusses and minuses in my life.

I still can’t forgive Apple for brining the iPad 4 out 7 months after the iPad 3.

You too? Especially since that was my first time purchasing an iPad. Since I usually keep tech for awhile I buy the latest. But that was bogus, a year in between releases is normal. It did last for quite some time at least.

I think I remember that. They were calling it "The New iPad" ?
Yeah. I think the problem was the iPad 3 had overheating issues. My wife used hers for 5 years before she got the Pro 10.5 and she used it for awhile after that for games for her nephews and nieces.

Thing is the iPad Pro has a better screen, can be used to draw on with the pencil, etc. The keyboard, whilst expensive is replaceable at least if damaged and third party options exist. Or if you don't want the keyboard you can omit it. Can't option "no keyboard" with a Mac.

Convertible 2 in 1 PCs are normallymore expensive than laptops, and they don't have superior screens normally.

The problem with the iPad Pro (especially the 12.9) isn't the price. The problem is the limitations of iPadOS at that price point. If I could actually run all the things I can on a MacBook Air on an iPad Pro I'd buy the iPad Pro at a $300-500 premium in a heartbeat.

But you can't. Hopefully Apple continue to get closer to that, because in terms of form factor and capabilities the iPad has a lot to offer, if only we didn't have to give up so much.

Apple are in the situation that Steve Jobs had no issue with, but seems they are hesitating on:
The MacBook Air and iPad are in a very similar space and it feels that they're being artificially limited in order to keep both devices. Steve had no issue with cannibalisation, but seems like the current team do.

Give iPadOS some more flexibility, kill the MacBook Air and replace with the iPad lineup. The lines are getting increasingly blurry, but it seems Apple are intentionally not doing this in order to try and sell two products to everyone instead of one to a lot of users.

At the moment it's working because the PC tablet market is so lacklustre (mostly intel and Microsoft's fault), but eventually they'll have to do this - or somebody else will do a good job of it instead.
Price has a lot to do with it because as you point out, it doesn’t do many of the things the Mac can do while the stylus is a niche use case. That presents a value problem.

Totally agree that iPad OS, the artificial limitations driven by greed/fear of cannibalization, incompetent competition, and Apple’s inability to innovate all add up to a stagnant tablet/hybrid market that should be far ahead of laptops by now, which is what Steve envisioned. His two greatest failures were hiring John Sculley and promoting Tim Cook.

Progress is slower than we would like but I think we'll get there eventually.

Apple is gradually making macOS more secure and forcing macOS software to adapt gradually to the new security features which have originated on iOS.

Once the macOS software base catches up, it will essentially need minimal work to run on iPadOS anyway and vice versa - apple are enabling macOS to run iPadOS apps as well.

Eventually the apps will be basically the same and the macOS vs. iPadOS argument will be moot - the apps will just run on either as both platforms will be very closely related.

His two greatest failures were hiring John Sculley and promoting Tim Cook.
Putting those two in the same sentence is harsh.

Tim Cook turned Apple into the most profitable company in history. Even before Steve passed away, by doing business optimisation things. Without that, there's a very real chance Apple would have gone broke and died in the mid-late 90s.

Tim Cook isn't personally responsible for the products Apple makes. he ensures the company is profitable and tips development money into Apple's labs for engineers to make new toys to play with. Some of those toys turn into products, but you can be sure that a heap of stuff that gets prototyped gets thrown out.

I do not think iPadOS is limited due to fear of cannibalization. I believe Apple keeps trying to provide a better user experience than with the traditional "PC OS" model. Sometimes the limitations improve UX. Security is a good example: it is great to have iPadOS well sandboxed while macOS is just one rogue binary away from a disaster.

That said, Apple has tried to build that UX for 10+ years and is not even close to a device that would be as compelling professional tool as a Mac. Without full multitasking, power of UNIX (available to users), and allowing the users to run any software they want with their iPad, iPadOS will never be able to compete with Mac (or Windows or Linux) for technical users.

Maybe Apple is ok for us not buying iPads any more? Maybe the audience is actually non-technical users (hi mom)? Maybe Apple would be better saying that honestly aloud?

  • iPad is easy
  • Mac is powerful
