Apple Just Broke a Tradition It Held for 12 Years

iPad (Pro) hardware is amazing, but with the limitations in iPadOS the device is not worth owning any more.

Apple, please call me back when I can have a full development environment on iPad (including brew and docker) and Google Meet works as well as on Chrome on Mac (including sharing tabs). These are not something Apple needs to build - they are something Apple should stop preventing others from building.

Apple, please do not make the same mistake with Vision Pro 🥺

I'm still rocking my 12-inch 2018 iPad Pro and feels just as fast and responsive as day 1. The battery is in extremely good shape, lasting days!

I think if they completely upgrade the hardware, but most importantly the experience/OS, that would be my call for upgrading after 6 years (!!).

I don’t think anyone’s missing out. The lineup is messy, but the hardware is so good that there’s little incentive to get an Android tablet.
I do agree that ipad is the best tablet out there not becoz of hardware. samsung high end tablets have great hardware and cost about the same. but since google didnt get into tablets until few months back and google has a history of not doing it right on the first try. so the software functionality isnt the same but should improve greatly. and google doesnt have any extra advantage like AI which will make the tablet standout .

on the other had google has such a big advantage on pixel watch 2 since it can use all the data collected map ur body totally

ipad with m2 will be a full blown laptop more like surface which will be very compelling

You do know Google has owned Android since 2005…;)

“Android is developed by Google until the latest changes and updates are ready to be released, at which point the source code is made available to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), an open source initiative led by Google.”

Knock Google and Android all you want; the Samsung S9 series tablets with Android 14, One UI 6 and Dex are already also “very compelling” tablets. :)

After years of using iPads I reverted back to using my iPad just for TV shows and recently switched to a Samsung tablet with and OLED screen and it is far better for my use case. The iPad pro display is far from and OLED and Apple simply did not release an OLED iPad or any iPad this year it seems.

"""Apple has broken a tradition it maintained for 12 years, releasing no new iPads in 2023 – the first time that the company has chosen to not launch a new tablet in an entire calendar year since the introduction of the product line."""
THAT IS A BIG LIE YOU CAN BUY NEW AND USED """NEW IPADS IN 2023-2024..Happy New year ALL! ;)

Still disappointed with the 10th Gen's price hike yet it retaining the non-laminated display. C'mon man! I upgraded my wife's every year...until now. She's still using the 9th Gen (plus they REALLY lowered the trade-in values; with my Veteran's discount, I used to be able to upgrade her annually for about $70-$80, this "upgrade" price tripled with the release of the 10th Gen.)

Would love to see StandBy coming to iPad Pro. Expecting major changes to iPad lineup this year. Will be great if the upcoming iPad Pro is released with more colour options.

The lack of a real file system and no support of USB devices (compared to notebooks) limits the iPad. And creating too many versions each with some limitation makes this too confusing to find out what this device is for. I haven't updated mine for 6 years. When I travel I still need to bring a full notebook because the iPadOS just doesn't cut it. Maybe if you want to watch youtube videos it's ok. But already lots of websites don't fully work on the iPad. Of all my Apple devices the Watch is the most useless, the iPad the second most useless device. There would be lots of potential though.

The only reason I owned various generations of the iPad Pro was becasuse they were the best mobile computers in the market by a long shot. After Apple Silicon, I have not thought of using them, especially as they hardheadldly maintain they want to keep the software as limited as it is. Without a full powerful software on par with MacOS, the iPad Pro is dead in the water. Which is a shame, as I still love my iPad Pros even though i have no use for them anymore.

Samsung's One UI and DeX have moved the needle toward positioning their Galaxy Tabs to operate as a mobile tablet and stationary productivity device. While iOS/iPadOS is a phone OS at its core, Android is closer to a traditional desktop OS at its core.

This is one reason why iPhones and iPads offered more of an appliance-like experience than Android did. As people wanted to do tasks that were at home on desktop OS devices, the tide started to turn... slowly... and only partially.

The core design of iOS/iPad OS caused Apple to have to work around those limitations by implementing unconventional approaches. From its sandboxed file system to implementation of mouse/pointer support, what was once a tight and cohesive OS became a cluttered and disjoint.

Just look at app and system settings on iOS/iPad OS. Some of an app's settings are in the app. Other settings for that app are under System settings. And for system settings, it seems like Accessibility is the catch-all for anything that doesn't fit under other system settings categories.

As for the lack of new iPad models in 2023, I don't think that is a bad thing. The hyperbole of "game-changing" feechurs with each new model is getting old and not effective enough to convince people to part with their current models at the same pace as in the past.

I know that many are upset that there are many different models and configurations, but IMO, that is a good thing. There is something for everyone at every price point. But I continue to be perplexed by the sentiment that some people take it as a personal offense that Apple would dare continue to sell something like the 9th gen iPad.

They actually developed several different models only to discover that they were already in the lineup.

And yet, both apps and iPadOS are still limiting iPad series while iPad itself is just a bigger version of iPhone. It sells because they are the only one dominating tablet markets.
It sells because alternatives suck. There are things I use my ipad for that I wouldn’t use my iPhone for. They serve a purpose and serve it well.

I'm not too surprised - I'm more often now wondering what the differences are between the wide range that are available, and it's probably time to start consolidating what they have on offer.

iPad OS is also getting to a point where I feel it needs a major update to make most use of the hardware in the latest iPads. Some key changes I'd expect would be along the lines of Profiles/Accounts so that iPads can be more readily shared in a household. No longer do I feel iPads are owned by a single person in a household.

I still can’t forgive Apple for brining the iPad 4 out 7 months after the iPad 3.

iPad 3 was my first iPad. Saved my money + Christmas gift cards and held off buying the iPad 2 for about 3 months waiting for a Retina display (I had an iPhone 4).

I was so dirty when they announced the iPad 4.

The iPad lineup is so messy.

If they launch an MX chip, the whole lineup of Macs and iPads that use it should be updated at once, the purchase decision would be based on other specs and pricing (screen, cameras, etc)

With Apple Silicon, Apple is behaving like Intel or AMD; having a ton of chips available, which makes it very confusing on what's the actual benefit of one vs the other for the average shopper; instead of having a clear differentiation.

Buying an M1 iPad in 2024 seems like a waste, as will be the old one soon.

Google has confused things a bit though with ChromeOS and Android framework, but I prefer Samsung's tablet Android approach. ;)

It all boils down to personal desires; it's great to have choices ..:)
