I highly doubt that the actual cost of the keynote is the reason Apple is not broadcasting a live stream. After all, practically every Macworld event since Jobs returned has been broadcast live in one form or another. I've been an Apple user long enough to realize that Mr. Jobs gets what he wants, and face it folks... this year Steve doesn't want a live stream.

it often took them a while to post it...... not unusual. the lack of live feed is the unusual part. if nothing else it will save Apple a ton of money. the live stream peaks at some $$$$incredible$$$$ levels. having it posted for people to watch whenever will save the stockholders some money.
hopefully there will be some good live reporters keeping everyone updated.

odd are you'll never know why they didn't have a live feed, but the decision was made weeks ago. it had nothing to do with leaks. they always hire an outside company to produce the live webcast, and reserve all the needed bandwith..... so if they really did pull the plug a few days ago it would be known.

Yup, I agree, I can't believe all you people that think this is a last minute thing because of Steve getting mad or something.

There have been other non-live Apple events, and the world still turns

A live-webcast Apple event is a fun tradition for some of us... but what exactly does it do for Apple that can't be achieved other ways?

(Maybe it prevents them from losing $millions when Mac rumor fans turn the whining into a boycott and get a Dell to avenge the injustice? )

Bad Job - Apple. Bad Apple - Jobs.

Has anyone got a definitive answer for store feeds? If you've ever been at Apple Soho for a Jobs Keynote you'd find it hard to believe they would stab us all in the back like that. You have 300 people plus all the employees packed into the theater listening to every syllable of his Jobliness, people skipping work and classes - these things go on for almost two hours. In fact you suddenly realize what they built the state of the art screening room for in the first place, 'cause it certainly ain't to show a couple of tourists how to sync' their iPods! All I can say is they better have a freaking good reason for this and make that reason abundantly clear, I for one am extremely disappointed.
Bad Job- Apple.
Bad Apple - Jobs.

Why stop there? How about... Next Apple slogan: "The New Abu Ghraib! Torturing Mac Fans For Fun And Profit!" :p

You can't forget "Redmond, Start your copiers! We used ours on your desktop search anouncement from 2+ years ago!"

But seriously I love apple and all but the last couple of years I haven't seen any truely innovative products that were actually thought of and then implemented by apple they've just been taking ideas and getting it out first or improving on it.

everyone praises dashboard but its just konfabulator and recycled bits of OS 8(I think it was).

Desktop search microsft anounced would be in longhorn years ago but due to release cycle being pushed back bumped up dts. They had it first, apple just delivered a public demo of it first. (maybe, google may have released the beta first, not sure)

As i've said elsewhere as well, most of their other stuff has been bought the ipod, most of their kick ass software etc.

Actually....pixlet is awesome they developed it with pixar so basically an apple product. Don't know what it is? most people don't. It's an awesome video codec that only works on macs. Can't use it on windows, can't play it back on any other device, basically crippled from the gate. It can take a 6GB movie and theoretically make it 250 mb with almost no loss. This would be the perfect codec for the iPod video but alas "user's don't want video, they want to pay $100 extra to look at pictures that are too small to see any detail without a tv"

So now that I am done bitching. Apple, please do something truely innovative and step off of your high horse and realise that your market share is dropping because you are too arrogant.

resume on topic talk.......

if they scramble cell signal...

if they scramble cell phone signal then just get a Satellite phone. problem solved. trust me, someone will find the means to get the word out. there's always someone there that's just as crazy as all of us who had the time and money to actually go there.

EDIT: also, the world's slowest website right now has to be
Macworld Expo

Fortunately, like Doctor Q points out below, we should at least get product info right after the keynote on apple.com. I bet a LOT of people will be hitting "Refresh" on apple.com tomorrow...

That's not even counting half of the slashdot crowd who'll be hitting apple.com the nanosecond each product is announced on their main page (a lot of slashdotters are big Apple fans since they switched to a BSD core for their OS).

Dude wireless is a moot point. Jobs's keynote is what? An hour? Simple solution. Setup a laptop outside to direct IM to a Macrumors receiver. Have about 10 runners willing to give up their seats. Each time something new comes out have someone dash outside with the news. Post it. Then the next person comes out and so on. *shrugs* Its what they did before wireless. :D Hmmm 10 people might not be enough though. :D :D :D

HOLY SH** i was planning my day around this !!! i like the idea of a quicktime upgrade ? but i thought that was not until Tiger 10.4 ?

all i can say is ..this BETTER BE GOOD APPLE !!!

I don't see why Apple would delay the next version of Quicktime (with H.264) until Tiger... Windows users still get Quicktime, so it can't really be tied too deep within the OS (this is Apple, not Microsoft).

I think Apple is being smart by not broadcasting live. It gives them the ability to edit any embarassing bloopers (like the blue screens of death at CES last week, Steve having a tantrum, etc). I guess that might somehow be protecting their stock price, too.

Hopefully because of the NEW Quicktime Codec! :p

Yep, you found the answer! They have one hour to edit/clean the presentation, then it takes 8 hours to encode the damn thing! :D

OMG!!! Apple is releasing OS X Tiger for X86!!!!! With all of Apple apps launching with it simultaneously!!

I don't think tiger for x86 would honestly be that hateful. I mean at this point when you match up the fastest mac to the fastest pc there is little to no performance difference (when you factor in the mac sites showing a g5 as faster and a pc site showing the pc faster I just place them about neck and neck) it would send their marketshare through the roof. I would bet they would hit 9-10% within a year.

Only problem is they would go broke since they have like 20%~ profit margins on hardware.

not to mention the earnings for apple are being released, and I'm SURE the news is going to be MUCH better than expected, just watch the stock price tomorrow night. My 2¢.

that actually makes the most sense. i seriously wanted to buy a ton of apple stock shortly before the release of the iTMS, but didn't. and now i'm kicking myself.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan to pretend the speech is on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. Tuesday I'm going into the woods, chopping some firewood, maybe I'll come in and read a book. Come Wednesday morning, I'm going to watch the keynote address live - (hey, lucky me, it came on the second I woke up) - then run over to the Apple site to see if they've posted the new stuff. (Hey, lucky me again - how'd they get it up so fast?)

Seriously, whatever they announce won't ship for three months, so it's not like the day will cost me anything. Besides, after I look at all the new toys, I can come here and - without wating - read 500 messages about how A) the products suck B) they'll never sell C) still no 3 GHz PowerMac! D) still no G5 Powerbook! and E) every product introduced already exists in a slightly less expensive, slightly less elegant form.

See ya in the woods. Wear an orange vest or else I might think you're a bear.

My guess for the long delay...

Steve is going to drone on and on tomorrow about all of these numerous product announcements. ;)

I kid. Hope it's good.

I was kidding guys.
As much as I'd chop off my left *coughs*...............arm (What did you think I was going to say?!?) ;) to get an X86 iMac from AMD and Apple its just not in the cards unless Apple was about to go under and I don't see that happening anytime soon. Either that or if they get seriously boxed into a corner with the PPC architecture. While for a while this looked like a possibility with the G4, the G5 has done wonderers at rejuvenating their architecture and with the rumors of what may be coming down the pipeline. I don’t see Apple going anywhere. The only concern is their laptop solutions. Simply, they suck right now. :(

An x86 release is like Apple's doomsday weapon against Windows.
Jobs probably has a big red Apple logo button with a locked cover on it on his desk. If he presses the button it launches the purchase page of the x86 version of OS X on Apple's front page and starts up the DVD presses deep in the core of the Earth managed by the Mole People.

9 hours seems a little excessive, but what can you do. I was planning on taking an extended lunch break to watch it live, but will probably just check MR instead and keep refreshing at Apple homepage if nothing else.

But, in the end, I'll watch the keynote eventually, so it's all good - I just won't be watching it tomorrow night, since it's my special day and all. As I said in another thread, a Steve Jobs keynote on my birthday - doesn't get much better than that!

I meant that as in "holy crap I'll be able to run OS X for only 129$US instead of 800$US (eMac)".

Of course, we still have to see if there really is a 499$US Mac, and what its specs are (I'd like at least a BTO option for a LightScribe superdrive).

I think there's an obvious reason. The quality of keynote streams has steadily gone down in the last couple of years, presumably because more and more people are watching.

I have broadband and it has been awful the last couple of live events. The thing will start fine and then cut out for no reason, or lose video or audio. I wasn't going to bother this year. If it starts at 9pm eastern it should be enough to keep all but the Apple diehards off.

Given that a lot of Windows users who have ipods now have an interest in Apple, it would be insane to broadcast it live.
