Apple has referenced four unreleased iPhones in an updated FCC filing for its MagSafe charger, while at the same time referencing the currently released iPhone 12 lineup as "legacy" iPhones.

The new filing doesn't reveal any details about a possible update to the MagSafe charger; instead, the filing only includes updated testing based on new equipment. In the equipment section of the filing, Apple lists four "New Phone" items while also listing A2176, A2172, A2341, and A2342, which correspond to the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, respectively, as "legacy" devices.

Earlier in the summer, Apple registered four new iPhone models in the EEC database, providing us with model IDs for the upcoming iPhones. However, today's new filing doesn't include any model numbers for the "New Phone" items, making it difficult to tie a connection between the filing and the EEC entry.

Amongst the features expected for the iPhone 13, Apple is expected to be improving the strength of the MagSafe magnets on the back of the new iPhones. While the filing doesn't confirm that, Apple may have needed to retest the charger as per FCC regulation on the new iPhones, given their stronger MagSafe system than the 2020 lineup.

Apple is widely expected to be holding an all-digital event next week on Tuesday, September 14, where it will announce the iPhone 13 as well as the Apple Watch Series 7. Apple may confirm the event as early as Tuesday.

If “legacy” merely means new iPhone supersedes the older one, it’s normal. But iPhone 12? Do we keep iPhone XR for another fricking year? Or apple decides to stop selling all previous gen iPhones to push iPhone 13 sale and upgrade?

device support for iOS 15 goes all the way back to iphone 6s, and has since iOS 13.

the OS still directly supports those devices meaning if one still has a 6s, they can still get all apps* and updates.

* - except for apps (only ive personally seen are games) that have specific device requirements.

apple like many other companies will of course push their flagship device since they've spent the money to r&d then make it, but clearly one is far from *having* to buy it.

the XR came out in 2018, and the 6s came out in 2015....so...there's no need for the drama.

Ouch, legacy already. iPhone 11 must be prehistoric.
No, Apple is just doing the same thing as they do almost every year -Remove last year’s flagship while keeping a low-spec’ed version of the flagship from two years ago to make this year’s flagship look like a huge step up

Put more simply, this year, Apple is keeping the iPhones XR, SE and 11 in the lineup, probably at new, even lower suggested prices as all of those are not threatening to sales of iPhones 13.

Maybe the Xr will also get be cut since it’s essentially just a lower spec’ed iPhone 11 and already at such a low price point.

Just come out with a phone capable of Satellite communication.
5G USELESS, OVERHYPED, NOT THAT FAST, EXPENSIVE.

BRING ON SATELLITE IPHONE PLEASE?

Wait, does this mean Apple will discontinue the whole iPhone 12 lineup? Will this also mean that there's no price drops across the whole lineup? Basically the same price points as today, and just replace the 12 series with 13 series? Well bummer. :(

Definitely looks like it. 12 will be like the X.
