The iPhone 11 replaces the XR
The iPhone 12 6.1” replaces the iPhone 11; the 12 mini disappears
The iPhone 13/13 mini replaces the 12/12 mini
The iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max replaces the 12 Pro/12 Pro Max
iPhone SE continues on as is until Q1 of 2022.
“Hi, Apple Store rep. This is my Mom, and she needs a new phone. Could you explain to her the choices…”

I mistook legacy as apple’s vintage and obsolete devices lol because im not upgrading my 12 pro until next year so and i think it will need a battery replacement between then so I thought it wouldn’t be able to happen lol but I just mixed up words

“Hi, Apple Store rep. This is my Mom, and she needs a new phone. Could you explain to her the choices…”
What’s your point? My parents had questions, I advised them. They had a price point they wanted to stay at since they are retired and don’t actually use the phone that much. Their iPads are way more important than the iPhone. Are you going to help your mom or just let the Apple Store rep do it? They can, that’s what they’re trained for and you can support what they say or offer your two cents worth or not.

I am not one of those people who thinks Apple should sell one single iPhone for everyone. The market is too large and there are too many competitors slobbering over poaching Apple’s customers if Apple misses a demographic by naively offering one iPhone model (even at 2 sizes) for everyone. The smartphone is no longer a novelty anymore, it’s mainstream and competition is fierce. This isn’t 2007.

If all 4 iPhone 12's are listed as legacy, then the regular 12 will be gone as well.

Perhaps the 13 mini drops down by $50 to fill that void.

That doesn’t preclude Apple offering the iPhone 12 as a “new” model with different storage tiers than what they currently do with the iPhone 11. I guess we’ll find out soon. I’m guessing the XR is gone though. Whether Apple offers the iPhone 12 is a trickier prediction.

Another ooTunes user. I like it’s ability to record streams but I don’t think the app has been updated since about 2008 lol
Yep, can't believe it's still around after all these years. Still use it on my current iPhone occasionally too. ;)

It’s legacy because there will be a new version of MagSafe accessories. Changing design every year has always had the benefit of forcing everyone who upgrades constantly to re-buy the same accessories.

Just might be looking for a really good deal on one of those old outdated legacy phones.

Which iPhone is Fred using?

The most likely scenario:

The iPhone 11 replaces the XR
The iPhone 12 6.1” replaces the iPhone 11; the 12 mini disappears
The iPhone 13/13 mini replaces the 12/12 mini
The iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max replaces the 12 Pro/12 Pro Max
iPhone SE continues on as is until Q1 of 2022.
The iPhone 12 6.1” will eat too much into iPhone 13 6.1” sales. They’re too similar and a lot of people will see the 12 as a better value.

Yep! Right with ya too!(2008 iPhone 3G jailbroken to
run on T-Mobile)

Nice. And that 2007 original actually lasted me just over 3 years, strictly a Cingular (ATT) device back then. But the darn thing was a great phone. But it got slow after the updates. Still powers up today, but I might have a 6-7 min battery life. 😆

Ended up finally upgrading to iPhone 4 in July 2010.

Could be, we’ll know in a week. I can’t see the XR lasting another year, but just maybe. If it does, then everything stays as is other than the 13 replacing the 12 and the 13 Pro replacing the 12 Pro, including current pricing/storage tiers. The 1TB Pro/Pro Max will cost $400 more than the 512GB, so $1699/$1799.

Interesting things are afoot, for sure

Feels like something about MagSafe is changing. The new charger may be backwards compatible with the legacy phones but not have all features.

My biggest complaint with current MagSafe is that it doesn’t work well in a car in a mount that holds a MagSafe puck, if you keep the screen on consistently for something like GPS. The screen being on along with the heat generated by charging is too much and charging slows to a crawl and won’t keep up with usage. It will charge if I lock my phone and keep the screen off.

My guess is this is why neither Apple nor any of the big accessory makers have offered MagSafe charging car mounts. The experience is awful. And car charging was the first want I had when MagSafe was announced. Maybe Apple solved this in the iPhone 13 and needs a new puck as part of the solution?

“Hi, Apple Store rep. This is my Mom, and she needs a new phone. Could you explain to her the choices…”
If the iPhone 12 is retained, I wonder how much different the iPhone 13 will be from it given that all the “new” features (120 hz always on display, camera improvements etc) seem to be meant for the pro models.

And my iPhone 8 that is still working flawlessly as evreyday device should be at museum probably. Apple will be waiting for my money for at least one more year.
Unfortunately I can't say the same for mine. Battery is craptastic and the lighting port sort of works for charging with some cables, but won't connect for CarPlay anymore. Looks like Apple is gonna get my money again shortly.

Not a chance.
There’s absolutely no scenario in which the iPhone 12 6.1, which is going to be extremely, extremely similar to the iPhone 13 6.1, goes from $829 down to $599 after one Keynote.
Sorry, won’t happen, not a chance.
Apple has never given an iPhone a $229 price cut in one day, and they’re not going to do it with an iPhone that is so similar to their new one.
Most likely scenario is that they just cut the XR and The entire 12 series, and you’re just left with the SE, 11, and 13 series.
Hell, if the Apple Watch Series 3 has proven anything, it’s that they’re not above leaving products around for years and years, so I wouldn’t even be surprised if the XR still remains, at least until early next year when the new SE comes out
Anything can and will happen. I’m not disputing your own conclusions. COVID-19 and the chip shortage have thrown things for a loop, so perhaps Apple will throw nothing out except the 12 as the XR and the 11 are bread and butter, pure gravy cash plays at this point. Looking forward to seeing which of us speculators has guessed correctly.

The 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Mac will all get get discontinued this year and replaced by the iPhone 13 lineup while the 6.1” iPhone 12 replaces the iPhone 11. Fairly simple step ladder strategy.
The thought was that the whole iPhone 12 lineup, including the regular 12, would be discontinued (the article mentioning all models being labeled legacy, including the regular 12). Unlike the 12, which offers quite a jump from the 11 (new design, higher res OLED, 5G), the 13 might not be that a huge difference than the 12 (same design, just faster chip and maybe better camera). Thus I can see Apple discontinuing the whole 12 lineup.

If Apple drops the 12 line (which probably is likely) when the 13 lineup is launched, when would they drop it from their website? Just after the announcement at the event? Or when the 13 is actually available for pre-sale?

Just curious how these things work.
