They weren't giving away instantly "free" iPods. You still had to pay the $200 upfront for the iPod, which is still a lot of money when students should've been using that for applecare. Then you had to wait a few weeks for apple to send you a rebate check, on top of that wait a few days for the check to clear at you bank. If you hate the headphones? flip them for profit, no waiting for your money to return to you..

For AppleCare? You mean were mad at students for not paying extra money for an extended warranty? Students are certainly not going to be doing that.

its kind of a slap in the face for a student thats just trying to afford a computer for school i think a discount would make the most sense for a student Not a free pair of headphones tha

CORECTION
i now see this is an addition to the education discount so this is great news :)

There was a recent review of these headphones by a prominent HeadFi reviewer (audiophile type geek) and the review was very favorable. Apparently the sound is actually quite good with this model.

Ironically, the people that go on about Beats being just branding are some of the most susceptible-to-branding people I've ever seen.

Any idea if this offer will be in the UK sometime soon? I'll take a free pair of £149RRP headphones any day.

I really dont see the problem here at all. Its not a "maybe get you money back in your pocket in a month" rebate, like the iPods were. They're literally handing them over to you.. Apple wants you to be attached to the brand, its a great business strategy. Its funny how people on here will "wine" about apple giving away Gen 2 beats headphones(Which are actually pretty good), but walk around still to this day using the "free" inline EarPods/Classic Earbuds which are terrible as sin. I wish I had a pair of free headphones for college, nice to get some good study sessions in with some free over the ear cans and not be disturbed.

It's not a slap in the face at all. Its a free pair of wired headphones or $100 bluetooth wireless headphones. This is alongside the student discount on the Macs which range $100-$200ish depending on the mac.

this is one of the most embarassing "sales", nevermind even for Apple.

wow. Just... wow.

if you're a student, trying to afford a new computer to go back to school. getting a free pair of headphones, while not nothing, doesn't exactly making the purchase of a new computer easier.

Not even a gift card. not even a discount of small sorts on that laptop

and whats more insulting, to the students, just this same very week, Apple showed they made nearly 40% profit on all these products.

if I were a student looking for a good, affordable laptop, Apple just left my list.

which is sad, because Macbook Air's in particular make for excellent school computers.

Seriously, Apple. if you get students into the eco-system, even if it's at a slight discount now, they're likely to stay in your ecosystem and pay for bigger things later. you're essentially telling students "we don't want you as customers".

Every one else in the industry has big sales right now. Whoever made this decision needs to be fired.

From Apple's point of view, very clever. What's the build cost of these, $10? From customer's point of view, 'Great, Apple are giving me a crappy pair of headphones I don't want'.

At least gift cards are flexible in what you can choose to purchase.

Well that was worth waiting for. Not.

Again, this is something you're being given FOR FREE. The horror of having to lug these out of the Apple store and sell them on Amazon, eBay, or regift them.

Buy a Mac and get some bloat ware thrown in.

How are headphones "bloatware?"

Agreed, a lot of people with their noses up in the air on this site seem to hate beats. Yet kids everywhere have them. Since this is a back to school promotion and the target audience is kids (including university kids), then this makes total sense.

Too much hating this morning.

I think the target audience is specifically college students because so many buy computers this time of year. Everyone else is just a bonus.

I happen to think this is a great promotion.

Beats is widely considered to not have a good value for money ratio. But it's also one of the most desirable products for teens. A lot of teens want to have one but their parents just think it's crazy to shell out this kind of money for a pair of headphones. So this promotion fills the gap perfectly.

Even I would be tempted to snatch the Solo2 wireless for just $100 (retail is $299 so you're saving $200)). The only thing is, I'm waiting for Skylake so I'm not buying.

And even if I wanted to buy. It's not for EU. Which to me is strange because we used to get the itunes store credit.

I think this is a solid b2s program for it's demographic.

Even if it's not for you they make a great gift (or just sell them for $200-250).

You can already get an education discount of around $100 on MacBook Pros. This is an optional promotion by Apple, they don't need to make their products cheaper. Apple is a premium brand so if students over leverage themselves buying an Apple product I blame the students.

And honestly, the MBA (which is all most college students will need for papers and Facebook) is not that expensive compared to other middle their computers. If you want something with good battery life that will last 3-5 years.

This is a decent promotion for students. The key word is students. Students will like this promotion. Anybody who doesn't, can't sell the headphones on. Their retail price is higher than the gift card values given out in the past anyway.

I wonder if the same promotion will occur in the UK?

How about $100 off a mac?

I about pee'd my pants laughing... I guess they have to cut somewhere to pay Angela's salary. Seriously they are at the point of no need to give incentives to sell products. People will buy anyway.

ahh i missed the student discount part thanks for clarifying

pardon me i did not see that they were still offering edu discounts on top of the head phones

This is pretty sad and shows how Angela Ahrendts phoned this in without giving it any deep thought. Not to mention it being late and causing parents and grandparents more stress than they deserve.

Maybe Apple need someone on the team who's mind is still rooted in the street as clearly they are all living in cloud cuckoo land.

Bold: Read the article, many EU countries have this promotion.

Edit: It did say some EU countries also had this promotion but the article has been edited.
