The stores are hers. The deals are going to be applied and offered in stores. She has a very big stake in the game. She should have been more objectionable and offered a better solution. Or maybe this is her offer she sweat talked Phil into.

She has no stake in the game and marketing doesn't work for retail

There was a recent review of these headphones by a prominent HeadFi reviewer (audiophile type geek) and the review was very favorable. Apparently the sound is actually quite good with this model.

Dude - don't you know? This is MacRumors forums. We're not allowed to like Beats headphones. We're all supposed whine and then recommend some $30 set we think sounds amazingly better. :)

The people that tell you that are contrarians trying sound more informed than they actually are. They are repeating a meme. Beats are not the best, but they're not the worst.

I'm not a fan of Beats headphone.

It's not that the sound is rubbish per se, it's just that I think they are really bad value for money.

I read an article recently where they did a tear down and discovered that the actual 'cans' had extra lumps of metal in them, whose sole purpose was to make them feel heavier and therefore more premium.

I'll see if I can find the article.

Ironically, the people that go on about Beats being just branding are some of the most susceptible-to-branding people I've ever seen.

My observation is many geeks love paying for brands, but they somehow do not think it as branding if they do it themselves and cannot accept others' have preferences and needs different from theirs. For example

"I hate people falling in love with Apple's branding and marketing. I hate they sell high margin products."

"Look at me wearing my Nintendo t-shirt. I love Nintendo games and amiibos!"

Also like you said, it's pretty ironic they are judging the Solo2s by the branding and fancy design. These are a pretty decent sounding pair of headphones and they are pretty light and comfortable to boot.

Unbelievable. As I commented before, Apple has given us the "Jelly of the Month" bonus versus allowing students the opportunity to get the Apple accessory that they really need.

Instead of embracing the diversity of their customer base, they are assuming that everyone needs and will welcome a set of headphones (which was a HOT Black Friday item last November - raise your hand if a pair was holiday gift).

I feel sorry for those that are trying to currently sell a pair on Ebay - with supply now greatly exceeding demand, the price is tanking.

What a kick in the shins.

Time for Eddie to take the RV to Apple's HQ to "educate" the VP of Retail.

We've got plenty of issues with entitlement here in the U.S. -- but IMO, this isn't a great example of it. A lot of students are on the fence about buying an Apple product for school, simply because they don't have much money and they can barely justify the higher price of one. In the past, giving a good price discount or even an item the student really needed to go with the computer made the deal viable, vs. uncompetitive.

I think as Mac users/faithful, it's easy to blow this kind of thing off and toss around the, "Well, you get what you pay for!" comments. But most students aren't really computer enthusiasts in the first place. They're just told they need one for school, and/or they primarily do web-based things (like social media or turning in school papers via the school's web site), which work just fine on pretty much any computer sold today.

There's a bit of peer-pressure to "get a Mac" because the brand has some respect, but chances are, Beats headphones aren't a "must have" item that they're factoring in as something they'd have to buy at full price otherwise to compliment a Windows PC purchase -- had they went the PC route instead of Mac.

It's slightly comforting to know that it's not just the UK that suffers with a scourge like sense of entitlement.

My first reaction was negative but after reading some reviews these look like a nice set of headphones. I'm a heck of a lot more happy about this than I would be about a free apple music subscription.

Not like it was the deciding factor in buying a 2,500.00 laptop but it is a nice bonus.

Apple's Back to School promotion offered up to a $100 Apple Store gift card with the purchase of a qualifying Mac, iPhone or iPad in past years, including the 2014 and 2013 promotions, but the iPhone and iPad are not included in this year's deal.

Weren't the computers discounted in the past? Wasn't it an extra $100 for most Macs? Or was that just the normal education discount? They used to give a free printer (or $100 off/rebate) too...

What many are missing in this thread is though I, a 27 year old man, may be lukewarm at best on beats headphones, but for high school and college kids, the demographic this is really targeting, these things are wildfire. I am a high school teacher and beats headphones are THE headphones to have.

Put yourself in their shoes: I'm 18 and my parents are buying me the most expensive thing I've ever gotten AND Im getting new beats?? Mac Please.

Edited for grammar

You and me may not like Beats, but they are a huge seller and this is a very smart promotion.

When you look at the financial report that Apple just released and people have subtracted 3-4 million Apple watches out of the "Other" category along with the iPod and Apple TV, not much is left for Beats. I'd question if they are really selling all that great considering what Apple paid for this brand.

Beats have always been considered garbage by audiophiles, but since Apple has purchased them some argue they are now audiophile grade headphones. I don't know. I wouldn't own them because from what I can tell they only do well with a certain genre of music and I don't listen a lot to that genre.

So anyone is it worth paying additional 100 bucks for wireless? Any mention as to when this will start for rest of countries like Asia?

Everything Apple does is turned into negativity by this little army here.

Free Beats with every macbook purchase? Negative.

Apple gets 75% of wearables market out of the gate? Negative.

Apple breaks bottom and top line earnings records? Of course, negative!

Assuming the "army" is not Samsung sponsored (and it's a pretty big assumption at this point), it's just sad.

The gift card is the best promotion they offered. Considering this is a back to school deal, the gift card could be used to buy useful software.

How exactly do headphones help someone learn?
It wasn't just a "gift card" in the first place. It was an iTunes card and most likely people used it for buying music or games. Nice try but doubtful that most people used it for "useful software" to help their academic studies. ;)

I'm not disagreeing with you about the sound quality of Beats. They are a fashion statement. Go to any mall and you'll see tons of kids wearing them around their neck the same as they do $200 basketball shoes. They don't care about sound quality, only that the headphones have the Beats logo and that they are the same color as their shoes.

Again, this is something you're being given FOR FREE. The horror of having to lug these out of the Apple store and sell them on Amazon, eBay, or regift them.

Macrumors should revisit this in a month or two in the future with an article on how the supply of new Solo2 headphones increased on eBay and how that deflated the price. It would be interesting.

The best tactic would probably be to pay the extra and then sell them on eBay. Reason: most people whose intention was to sell would just go with the basic model and therefore the price will be depressed, most people paying for the upgrade would intend to keep them therefore less price depression.

Who cares what I called it?

The simple fact that it could be used to purchase just about any piece of software on the app stores (or multiple applications) makes it better than a pair of headphones containing +-$20 worth of parts.
