WHat about replacements free of charge ? A repaired Airpods Pro would be more prone to failing again yes?

It will be interesting to see if Apple really has fixed the failing ear test problem. I had believed for a long time it was a design flaw, that the microphone position allows it to get blocked up with ear wax.
Isn't that a totally different issue?

The issue this covers, which I have on mine, is a series of loud crackles any time I move my jaw or walk or gently tap my head with a finger. It forces you to set Noise Control to "off" or else they are completely unusable.

when and where can I buy Airpods Pro that was manufactured *after* October 2020? or should I just wait?

thanks!

I don't have a crackling sound while using them, but I do hear squeeking noise when I put them in my ears. Also, since the latest firmware (3A283) I am experiencing degraded ANC as they are letting in more background noise than before.

I wonder if I should have them replaced? The service program does say "Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected,..., or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise". It sounds like I am experiencing less effective ANC, although I don't know if it's a firmware tweak or a defet? How can you be sure you have affected AirPods Pro?

Unfortunately no Apple Store nearby, just a certified reseller. I doubt they will be able to run a test as they always need to ship stuff to their central repair office which is super annoying.

I had occasional cracking or pops, didn't concern me too much, but the ANC had degraded quite a lot compared to original ( I purchased just under 1 year ago).
I went to local Apple Store today & they replaced without any prompting.
Sound s a lot better ATM, but I will have to wait until my next walk to see how they perform with traffic noise adjacent to walkway.

Well possibly, although the agent advised me this was also resolved and was part of the same flawed component.

I suspect it probably isn't resolved but I am sure Apple must also know about this design flaw. But perhaps it is not solvable without a complete redesign of the AirPods Pro.

And to add, to be fair on the Apple site it does say degraded NC/NC not working as expected, which is one of the symptoms of the failing ear tip test.

I called Apple about this problem back in April when Apple Stores were closed for quarantine and they just sent me a new set of AirPods Pro. They did it so quickly and without argument that it seemed like that there must have been a flag in their computer system describing the problem and encouraging support reps to collect the faulty units so they could diagnose the cause. Had that happen with the glass on my iPhone 11 Pro Max too when it exhibited tons of scratches in the first week as if something was wrong with the fingerprint coating. I thought it was strange that they replaced the whole phone rather than just the glass since they could replace the glass in store.

One time an Apple rep straight-up told my wife that they wanted to replace her iPhone completely rather than fix it because there was a request for units with her phone’s problem for diagnostic purposes.

I don’t think Apple goes public with a repair program like this until they determine if the issue is wide spread, limited to a set of serial numbers in a certain production run or anecdotal and just a handful of units.

I had this problem about a 2 months ago and Apple replaced both my AirPods Pro without any issue. Glad I got mine handled before the mass replacement rush starts

Just returned from my appointment at the Apple store with both AirPods replaced for free. Checking the serial number suggests they were manufactured end of Sept/first week of Oct.

Noise cancelling is much better, although my Earfit test still didn't work, even with the largest tips. I do have big ears though! Might need to find some alternatives.
The 4th character & 5th character your serial number is it "D1" like mine ?

Thanks, what’s weird is Apple has sent me row separate fedex packages. I hope they didn’t send a separate box for each individual pod.

Thanks MR! Would have never known about the repair program otherwise.

I made that realization after my first gen lasted barely over 2 years. I almost didn’t get the Pros, but I figured with the AppleCare this time around, I could replace them right before 2 years and make that set last another 2 years. Now that I’ve gotten both replaced after a year because of this issue, I’m not sure if that plan will hold up as well. I guess I might still be able to get the case replaced if the battery is beaten, which I’m sure it will be.
In my experience owning the original AirPods for two years, the case’s battery is actually still holding on its own pretty well.

The buds’ batteries have always been the ones which dragging the whole set down to a barely tolerable point. It’s too tiny to keep its charge for so long, and it deteriorates within months after you buy it.

The theory is you always cycle the buds battery 24/7. The case however didn’t get abused as often. You only charge it when you plug it in, and discharge only for when the buds sit in it.

My replacements came today in two separate boxes/deliveries (1 per AirPod Pro). Worth noting that there are small and large tips in the packaging (behind the AirPod itself) if you need spares.

I'm rather concerned the replacements I've received don't appear to have been manufactured very recently.

GX5DD is the start of my serial number which I think means second week of the second half of 2020, i.e. way before October. I was assured these units would have the issue resolved.

Hmm, okay on inspection it's possible these are changed.

Those with new replacements, if you hold them up to the light do you see a new small component in the grill that faces your ear? It's very small and you won't be able to see it unless you shine line on the AirPod.

My old ones don't have it but my replacements do.

Edit:

Oddly only the left one has it :/

Replacements came today. Serial number now shows as "?"

Can't tell when they were manufactured.
