This delusional, victimhood way of thinking is so childish. Yeah, straight, white males are so disadvantaged... not being raped in an alley at night, not being brutally beaten or murdered because of your sexuality, not being profiled by police while driving or even just wearing a hoodie, not being refused a job because of your skin color... you have it so rough. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

You talk about "victimhood way of thinking" yet you try to justify discriminative recruiting practices such as this one by talking about unrelated victimhood stories, such as people "beaten by their sexuality" or "raped".

The only fact here is that a sex based recruiting event or any other initiative that is sex-exclusive is a blatant discrimination, the same practice that their promoters try to fight against.

“Discriminatory”. You’re funny. Sorry your opinion is wrong.

A harmless feel good program for TC. I hope they tell them the realities of working as a programmer. Long hours in front of a computer, sometimes limited human interaction, potential age discrimination, salaries can top out at an early age.

I knew all of that and programming is exactly what I want to do. However, I do know many women who wish they would have selected a different profession. Several have left for careers in the medical field. It is not for everyone, so I don't advice pushing people into it. Real day-to-day programming isn't the same as college or a programming camp.

After reading this website regularly for 5+ years, I created an account just to quote your response.

Now, I've worked at Apple Retail for those 5+ years I've been visiting this site. I can say first hand over the last 2 years, Apple has made a tremendous shift toward hiring minorities. Yes, being a woman qualifies as a minority. I've seen promotions go to FAR LESS qualified candidates simply because they were women. Its not pretty. This is discrimination, and there is really nothing more to it.

Your post nicely illustrates why being technically correct is often a worthless goal.

Yes, technically, this program discriminates against men.

At best, however, your criticism could be that it either corrects a problem that isn't there, or overcompensates it.

…so?

It doesn't change that, 15 years later, stories of women being paid less, being ignored at meetings, being passed over for promotion, being sexually harassed and assaulted, and receiving rape and death threats happen at major technology companies are happening several times a year and you'd have to be uninformed or lying to pretend otherwise. And no, similar stories of men don't happen at anywhere near the same rate.

Cool.
“paid less” LOL, any sources for that ? and I mean sources that take in consideration the Position, Experience, Responsabilities, Time in the company, Hours worked, etc ? Because if we assume your argument is true, then every employer would hire women to save some money wouldnt they ?

Cool.
Once again, you post anecdotes and hearsay without any real proof to back up what you're saying. It appears that you're just parroting info you've been told.

In the general population of the world, women will receive rape threats and, unfortunately, actual assaults, at a greater number than men. But that doesn't support your statements; it's just means that men can be jerks to women. There is no proof that women are being passed over for promotion or being paid less than men. You can repeat it all you want but facts simply don't support that.

So you want to implement policies in search of a problem to solve. If these private companies want to do that, I'm ok with it. They're private companies and can do what they want within the law. Let's not pretend this is actually doing anything or solving any problem, though.

An effort to hire more minorities who are discriminated against at other companies does not mean they re less capable or qualified. It just means they’re given a fair shot instead of being ignored. I’m sorry you’re unable to comprehend the difference.

Really? You're a manager, and can therefore make an assessment on why people were promoted or not promoted?

Also, Apple Retail is operated quite differently from the software engineering department, so I'm not sure how this anecdote helps.

I’m just here for all the white male, anti-diversity comments like yours. Thanks for not disappointing.
[doublepost=1543269432][/doublepost]

This.
Anti-diversity? Who said anything about that? I said forced diversity. There is a difference. In essence they want to force or at least coerce women into a profession that on average they are biologically not predisposed to enjoy or have an interest in. Engineers are predominantly men and physicians are predominantly female, big freaking deal....

But anyways, keep spouting those SJW buzzwords though! I'm sure you'll be advocating a gender balance for all of the other less attractive male-dominated jobs as well! Coal mining & bin men come to mind.

A hole lot of implicit claims yet no sources. Raped in an alley way, yeah right, it's become an epidemic!!! Being brutally murdered for your sexuality? Last time I heard that happening was somewhere in the Middle East..

…such as?
Different brains for starters? Interesting that you seem to be on the side of "there are no differences between men and women other than their genitals"... at least that's what I assume you think. If that is indeed the case, I am wondering why you would want a gender balance in the workplace, considering that women are no different than men, so what are they going to add? This also applies in the opposite scenario (before you get triggered).

Reverse discrimination is still discrimination.

Regardless, I'm all for more women becoming developers and not being shunned or stereotyped due to their gender. I've worked with plenty of very intelligent and smart women engineers.
I tend to simply refer to it as discrimination.

Arguing with these people is not worth the effort. They will remain unconvinced.

You'll notice I gave no indication for which side I lean towards but I'll give a hint. It's the one that tends to stay away from ad hominem and thinks the hiring process should be based on the rational and obvious; something that rhymes with ferret.

It must be nice to have nobody tell you you can’t do a job because of who you are.

So I uhhhhh assume you have some evidence for that claim yeah? Or did that come straight from the SJW propaganda machine?

It must be nice to not need programmes that only aim to help and even out decades of oppression.

but muh oppresjun!! What oppression, huh? Give me something to work with.

What’s with your childish obsession with “SJW?” It’s cute that you think that’s somehow an insult :D

You got an article of an instance of gay bashing! Well done! Now we have solid proof that it has become an epidemic!

Obsession with SJW? Do you need me to google for you what obsession means? Also I don't think SJW is an insult. I use it in its proper context.
