California?
Yeah, in Illinois, they updated the security requirements for ids/licenses. Last time I renewed my license, I was in a grandfather clause where I could renew online and it would be good for just driving. If I want to travel by plane, I'd have to go into the DMV with a bunch of documentation (social security card, multiple things that had my address, etc.) to meet the "RealID" (or whatever it's called) requirements. Haven't done it yet since I have no plans on traveling in the near future. Will have to do it sooner or later.I tried to do it, but I have an old style license from 15 years ago (never got the new one since they don't expire for 50 years here in AZ) and it won't scan the back, assuming they changed the style of the newer license. Those of us in AZ who haven't updated, we may have to now.
It is a lot easier when a country has a single set of laws, which is unlike the US with 50 sets of laws and regulations on driving on top of what the federal government dictates. Why we do not have a national license is beyond explanation? We all use the same roads. Is this some kind of novelty in the U.S.?? in Poland we've had a government app (mObywatel), both for iOS and android, which does exactly the same since 2019.. in this app we have: driver's license, ID card, vaccination certificate, car documents/insurance, electronic prescriptions, etc., no one carries any physical documents any longer... and interestingly enough, it's Americans who make fun of Poles by telling Polish jokes....![]()
I did also and was added in about 2 minutes. No picture or anything, just picture of fox on cactus.Just went through the routine. You scan both sides of your license; then you move your head around, open your mouth, that sort of thing — presumably to make sure you’re at least a ventriloquist’s dummy. Then a final selfie … and, last, a notification that it’s been sent to the state and that you’ll be notified by Wallet of any updates.
I’m especially curious to see what it looks like once it’s actually been added to Wallet. Will there be a front-and-back picture that I could hand to the nice ossifer should I forget my wallet at home? Because the press release makes plain that it’s only Sky Harbor TSA point-of-entry kiosks that support the no-touch verification.

I like the idea of having my license in digital format. I don't like the idea of showing or giving my phone to law enforcement. It will also be an issue when traveling since so many states will be years implementing this.
Does this mean users don’t need to carry their license while driving anymore? Or does it only apply for use at airports?

Only the TSA has committed to using it, and you must check which airports accept it first before relying on it. There are states that have electronic driver's license apps and police can accept ID through their apps but those don't work with the Apple Wallet system yet.Does this mean users don’t need to carry their license while driving anymore? An issue? Nope.. if that state doesn’t have it, just take your wallet..?It will also be an issue when traveling since so many states will be years implementing this.
Same misunderstanding again and again and again! They don't take your phone! You scan with NFC! They get the info from their screen! They literally can't use the Apple Wallet graphic from your phone because it just says your name! And people have the ability to manipulate images on their phones and computers so a photoshopped license is a big problem if they just take your phone's word for it and they have to scan to ensure the license is authentic because it gets confirmed on the back-end!Will the phone need to be unlocked to display the licence? Hopefully not, otherwise you just presented an unlocked device to whatever person is asking for it.
mine just finished and says "ready for use" it looks like a cool purple desert w a cactus on it. also has the motion and light color effect as you move your phoneJust went through the routine. It clearly states on Arizona's DMV site that this is not a replacement for your physical drivers license/ID and your still required to carry your physical license/ID with you when driving/travelingJust went through the routine. One step closer to never needing to carry a wallet or anything other than my phone! Can’t wait! Here come the “yeah buts…”
I read it, and I just re-read it. I just find it strange that this feature revolves around DRIVERS Licenses but is only for use at airports, and I’ve never seen any mention of a plan for it being used elsewhere. Seems relatively pointless for most people, especially since they’ll likely need their physical ID for their return flight.Tell us that you didn't read the article without actually saying so...![]()
No, you got the main points and I agree with you. If you're still required to carry you physical drivers license/ID card I don't see the point of using this at all.. Takes me 2 seconds to take out my license, I keep it in my front pocket when traveling.I read it, and I just re-read it. Did I miss something in the article about being used in other scenarios?
Why is California, home of all the tech companies, always so late to get these things?California?
Wondering what's so special about iPhone 8 that won't make this possible on iPhone 6S or 7 running iOS 15.4...
No thanks. One more avenue into identity theft. Not going to do it. The government already knows too much about me. Not gonna let Apple join the party, too. Paper or nothing.
