Arizona here with the old style license. It took a few attempts, but I was able to get the back to scan eventually. Waiting for verification now.
I will try again later but no luck hereArizona here with the old style license. It took a few attempts, but I was able to get the back to scan eventually. Waiting for verification now.
Yeah, agreed. This isn’t helpful for when 99.9% of people need their license — when they’re driving. Even if you do use this at an airport, people should still carry their physical ID for other scenarios on the same trip. I feel like it’s almost more trouble than it’s worth unless you travel a ton.No, you got the main points and I agree with you. If you're still required to carry you physical drivers license/ID card I don't see the point of using this at all.. Takes me 2 seconds to take out my license, I keep it in my front pocket when traveling.
You don't have to hand over your phone. The information is sent electronically to a reader.I can't understand how people are excited for the day they have to hand their phones to police officers and other officials. An ID card in your wallet is fine.
According to the instruction video on Apple's page it looks like it:Will the phone need to be unlocked to display the licence? Hopefully not, otherwise you just presented an unlocked device to whatever person is asking for it.
AZ has had an app based digital ID for a while now. Called AZ Mobile ID.Is this some kind of novelty in the U.S.?? in Poland we've had a government app (mObywatel), both for iOS and android, which does exactly the same since 2019.. in this app we have: driver's license, ID card, vaccination certificate, car documents/insurance, electronic prescriptions, etc., no one carries any physical documents any longer... and interestingly enough, it's Americans who make fun of Poles by telling Polish jokes....![]()
why would I need to hand my phone to police or "other officials"?I can't understand how people are excited for the day they have to hand their phones to police officers and other officials. An ID card in your wallet is fine.
Apple isn't 'joining the party' - this information never sits on Apple servers. It's purely on your phone. The argument that government already knows too much about you also makes little sense - they already have this information on you! Lastly, the argument that this is another avenue into identity theft: how so? Sure, IFF Apple didn't do a good job and securely stored the info on your phone's Secure Element AND IFF your phone got hacked, you MIGHT be more exposed to identity theft. But the probability of that happening is a lot lower than the probability of you losing or having your physical license stolen. In other words, since this is meant to *replace* your physical license, you're not adding another avenue into identity theft. No thanks. One more avenue into identity theft. Not going to do it. The government already knows too much about me. Not gonna let Apple join the party, too. Paper or nothing.
"Can't we have both?"I can't understand how people are excited for the day they have to hand their phones to police officers and other officials. An ID card in your wallet is fine.
So I have to read more than the headline? It's right there in the 1st sentence...
" Apple today announced that Arizona has become the first U.S. state to offer driver's license and state ID in the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch."
It may be. Many trucking companies won't hire drivers with a CA license, and more are joining them. Any other state, no problem. As in the most useless drivers license, not even accepted in Europe? ?
Why? What’s up with the CA driver’s license? It may be. Many trucking companies won't hire drivers with a CA license, and more are joining them. Any other state, no problem.
I read it, and I just re-read it. I just find it strange that this feature revolves around DRIVERS Licenses but is only for use at airports, and I’ve never seen any mention of a plan for it being used elsewhere. Seems relatively pointless for most people, especially since they’ll likely need their physical ID for their return flight.
Did I miss something in the article about being used in other scenarios?
How is it useless? Your personal information is stored under the 3-dots in the top right corner.Just registered and obtained my Arizona digital ID. Took only 1 minute from submission to state approval. The digital ID image in wallet does not even have my full name or picture on it so it's useless unless the person checking your ID has an identity reader... which only seems to be available at TSA check-in at Sky Harbor Airport in AZ. So, not really a usable replacement for your physical ID.
