Thing is, as a pro, one needs to be able to look at a DAW for 20+ hours straight sometimes.

In order to do this, the look needs to be light and somewhat bland. Logic 9, Abelton and PT 10 / 11 have that quality.

That's a GOOD thing.

Logic X .....white waveforms, all color choices are garish neon, overly thick fonts....
Friggin pictures of virtual drummers named "Kyle" really????

pppffftttt

It's disappointing to see that this brand new, redesigned release from Apple is loaded full of excessive, gratuitously Skeuomorphic UI elements. And Main Stage is even worse!

Who cares? I mean, seriously, what is this? Fashion world??? The Devil Wears Macintosh? I don't know what's wrong with kids these days....

Personally, I think it's cool that a given instrument control board looks like the real old thing. But then I'm ancient in my '30s....

I'm guessing this means Logic Express is dead, in favour of Garage Band. Pity, as it was far more capable than GB, and far more affordable than Pro.

Logic Express used to cost $199 and now you're whining because Logic *PRO* costs $199? (shakes head) This thing is dirt cheap for what it does. It's already at a hobby price. I paid over $400 for it a few years ago and it was worth every cent even then.

Two months is too long ago for a refund. The consensus seems to be a month, max.

Damn, I also bought MainStage 2 like 1 month and a half ago... and also haven't even had time to learn how to properly use it yet... I thought it was going to be more similar to GarageBand... the advertised pictures made it look very different to what it is in reality, heh

Just got a mac, this should be interesting. Been reading about Logic Pro X like it is some sort of Unicorn or something.

I come from years of Sonar, and have been leaning towards switching to S1, but Logic sounds like a really nice program. But why no trial? Every DAW has a trial except this one, and I would love to see how I manage in the workflow before I dropped $199.

That is really the elephant in the room with all the Major DAWs.
What is up with control surface support?
It seems whenever I find the control surface of my dreams it turns out it isn't supported by my DAW or it may only be supported in some emulation mode which leaves out acres of functionality.
I really hope that Apple has worked with some manufacturers on this. I bailed on Sonar because the control surface support got worse and worse from 5 to 6 to 7.

Do you have any favorites, or know of what control surfaces work very well with Logic Pro? Thanks.

(I am personally asking to see how well my M-Audio Axiom 61 key keyboard will do)
EDIT: Looks like I am out of luck with an Axiom 61 1st gen. Only the 2nd gen has DirectLink files that I can download. Oh well.

How did you contact them?
I bougth Logic Pro exactly 2 months ago and haven't even had time to start learning to use it :-/

Hey don't take what I said as truth though. It doesn't hurt to email them and ask if you really want to :) You never know if they'll be feeling generous.

Someone earlier in the thread (who was near a month) had success by writing to them, instead of calling.

I bought Mainstage 2 in the App Store some time ago. I know it's no longer available for download.

However, if in the future I decide to reinstall Mainstage 2 on my laptop, will I sitll be able to do so under the 'Purchased' tab?

EDIT: I tried it out myself and I can still download it. Deleted Mainstage 2 and then went into the App Store -> Purchased -> Install and I have it again. Pretty sweet.

Update looks awesome, especially the virtual drummer, flex pitch, and smart controls.

Only two bummers for me:

1) I'm still on Snow Leopard, so don't like the 10.8.4 requirement. I was thinking I would finally update OS X when Mavericks comes out, but that is a few months away. Guess I'll stick to Logic 9 until Mavericks comes out.

2) They did not update/improve Amp Designer. Those guitar amp models really suck, those can really stand to be improved.

Otherwise, looks GREAT.

Just need Apogee to update their Ensemble interface with Thunderbolt now.

Given that Apple have clearly shown that they're moving away from Skeuomorphism in a big way elsewhere, it seems like Apple's left hand has no clue what the right hand is doing these days. Another sign of a failing company?

Do audio apps really need to look like analogue mix boards from the 1980s for people to understand them? No. And plenty already do not.

'Skeuomorphism' is still rampant in iOS7. "Tabs" and stacking card views like the new "pages" view in iOS7's Safari are still skeuomorphic. There are "switches" galore through all the settings pages that are just visual copies of the hardware switches on older iPod Shuffles. Ableton Live's "flat" design has skeuomorphisms of traditional hardware mixers (knobs, sliders, bouncing 'LED' style displays, oscilloscope style displays etc). What has changed in iOS7 (and already there in Live, for years) is the style in which the skeuomorphism has been drawn.

Most audio software manufactures make their software closely resemble its hardware counterparts. It's a trend across the entire industry; Apple's just fitting in here and there's not a lot of reason to do it any differently. The last time I looked at MainStage, tho', I thought it was revolting ;-)

Agreed. I paid over $1500 for Logic (Emagic) in the 90's and the plugins that got included a while back would have taken the price over $3k.

Must be a huge download?

How big is the download from the App Store?

My last version of Logic came on multiple DVDs with a sound library of something like 50 GBs. (Included all the Jam Packs).

Perhaps a very stupid question, but anyone know how to purchase an upgrade if the original app was not bought from the App Store. I've been a LP user for 15 years and am so excited to get this upgrade!!!

Apple doesn't do "Upgrades". The price is $199 for everybody whether you have Logic 9 or not.

This is the first time in a long time Apple had genuinely surprised me with a launch. I knew it was coming, but certainly not this quick!

not that quick?

not that quick?

not that quick?!?

4 years, 4 freaking years :D

Really? I've made much worse jokes at drummers' expense, that one was a little tame by my standards. Not intended for any offence though, I know many drummers and it's become somewhat of a tradition.

Didn't mean to offend though, sorry if it came across that way. :)

I've been drumming for quite some years now and I think the joke was funny. :)

Fella's... it doesn't have to be plain and old looking vs candy vomit. That's what designing is all about... taking all aspects of requisite human perceptions into account... and perceptions reality.

Even though our politicians are clowns, they get away with murder because they dress serious corporate no nonsense. If they actually dressed as clowns they wouldn't make it 5 minutes. :D

LX, otoh, is a serious app dressed as a clown. It should be more 'pro' looking

1) I'm still on Snow Leopard, so don't like the 10.8.4 requirement.

I guess you have your reasons, but I don't see why some people are so sceptic towards Mountain Lion. I can understand why people stayed on Snow Leo when Lion came out, but 10.8 really is a good improvement over 10.7. I like 10.8 much better than 10.6.

Apple is also a huge fan of pushing technology the way they want it to go by dropping support in one way or another.

While this is true, Apple is a relatively minor player in the DAW market. Pro Tools rules the roost, and I doubt Logic going 64-bit only is going to have much of an impact, other than to users who have to go back to Logic 9 every time they need a 32-bit plugin.
