Digital Performer has both of these features for many years already.

yeah but I like Logic's interface. I would not consider jumping ship to Motu, presonus or any other DAWs bar ProTools. The ecosystem is just not there. And even with ProTools, I cringe at the thought of having to switch workflow.

I didn't know v9 was only 200. I paid 500 a few years ago.

They brought down the price when they "slimmed down" Logic (no more bundled MainStage and Waveburner) and ceased to offer boxed copies with all the lovely documentation.

Frankly, with 35GB of samples to download, I'd love to have a boxed copy available right now...

I wonder if I can take my Mac to an Apple store and leave it there to download.

Wow. Is it just me or did Apple completely drop VST support? I mean it doesn't really bother me personally but I can imagine some people not liking this at all!

...
It looks like there's sadly no mention of OpenCL, which makes me seriously question whether the new Mac Pro will be cost-effective for Logic users.

Very interesting.

I was very intrigued how Apple seemed to be endorsing the GPU in the new Mac Pro as the road to “pro” computing power. It seems like they could have offered two CPUs rather than two GPUs but didn’t even make that an option.
And yet here’s a pro software release from Apple that maybe doesn’t utilize the GPU? IDK, I’m not an audio guy, so I don’t even know how much power they really need. But I know some audio guys and the answer always seems to be “MOAR!”

I guess they have time, though. The new Mac Pro isn’t out yet. And I guess in real life maybe a lot of processing power actually goes to the third-party filters and plugins so maybe a lot of it isn’t really up to Apple??? (That's an honest question, BTW: I don't know at all.)

I guess I’m just fascinated by the GPGPU model and am grasping at data points to try to understand how general or niche it will really be.

And... I'm not sure why this is SO exciting to people

Logic users are still happy to get these, it's much easier to stick with Logic than switch apps. Same as when DP users finally got 64 bit support and other features that Logic had for years. And those are just a couple of many features in this update.

No buzzkill intended, just a reality check to let people know that Apple is not always cutting edge as they may believe.

People actually using the software don't care about hype or what's "cutting edge". A good update with good features is what makes us happy, not some pissing contest versus other software.

Wow. Is it just me or did Apple completely drop VST support?

Nope, Apple never had VST support. And what mac plugins are made for VST but not AU, are there some?

Wow, you haven't used Logic for a while or? VST was dropped eons ago!

As you said, "maybe", and the MP isn't out yet. It could go either way, but it's possible that openCL is being developed and when the MP comes out we'll see 10.1. People were similarly surprised when 64 bit came in the free 9.1 update.

DL ing now...

Let's see if they improved how things are selected in the arrange window. PT is better in that one regard.

PS: Gain reduction meters are very welcome. Also it will be fun to checkout EXS24 feutures and look for "redmatica" features. Apple purchased them a year ago.

best,
SvK

Is the 'engine overload' feature still there? You know, the thing that sometimes happens when you load a project then hit 'play' and chokes even on your 64 core 12ghz mega mac?

Where's the Redmatica integration? You know, the software andrea gozzi sold to apple but continued to sell up until the very second he shut down and left you holding the bag.

I agree, drumming is a really hard job, up there with solving complex differential equations, simulating weather, image processing, managing data for millions of users...

The new virtual drummer is cool and all, but what Logic really needs are:

1) Virtual guitarist with varying levels of stoned

2) Virtual lead singer with parameterized ego settings

Mac App Store apps don't have discounts or upgrade pricing for previous version owners, you just buy the new version at the full price.

And I'm totally OK with it!

If I want to feel amazed, I think of how much this technology (or something similar in the analog world) would have cost 15 years ago. It's mind blowing.

$200 is nothing compared to what you get.

Wow, really? VST support was dropped ages ago? LOL! I'm such a nubcake.

Nope, Apple never had VST support. And what mac plugins are made for VST but not AU, are there some?

Don't know, but all the plugins I use come in both VST and AU, and I've been forever installing BOTH because never knew which one is better.... Oh well!

Yes, that is, in fact, still there. :p

It's possible. But there's a banner on the FCPX page saying there will be an update to take advantage of the new Mac Pro, but no such banner on the Logic page. Does that mean it won't happen? No, Apple can surprise us you're right, but if I was a betting man...

Yeah, it's hard to say. It seems like GPUs could speed up DSP and audio processing calculations, but I'd think Apple would have to change the AU format to provide this capability and for third-party plugins to hook into this. Maybe we'll see this happen a year or two from now, or never. It's possible Apple could offload Logic's internal audio processing to OpenCL, but I'm really just guessing here. I don't know if there would be significant performance improvements just for that, because you're right, the plugins are where the majority of CPU power is needed.

I've only had Logic Pro 9 for a couple of months (so can't complain to Apple about giving me a free upgrade), so I was just going to stick to 9 for a longer while.
But now I just saw there is a companion iPad app to control Logic! That is cool, and can see how it can make some controls more intuitive. Now I want it!!! :(

If you need something to tide you over for a while, check out the TouchOSC app for iPad. It does some of the things that the new Logic Remote does, for LP9.

Awesome... but honestly I hate the new trend with these dark interfaces and reversed-out letters. I've been a graphic designer for 20 years... and I hate the dark UI's. I have to squint to read everything. Adobe does this too. Not a fan.

Jesus! Talk about 1st world problems....
Poor you! You don't like the dark colour.

If you don't like it, don't use it. We don't care. I am sure there is something else out there without the dark background.

Do you know how music was made back in the day? You should go back to that.

BTW, go to a doctor. There's something wrong with your eyes if you have to squint to read. Jesus!
