A few questions on installing.

1) Should I Remove logic 9?
2) will this upgrade logic 9 or will both programs be available?
3) Does logic X include all downloadable content from logic 9 plus the new stuff or is it completely different? Does it import the downloadable content from 9?

This upgrade removes your Logic 9 install... and Logic 9 is no longer available from Apple to download. So install at your own risk.

The systematic dumbing down of all their Pro Apps... :(

Amen to that brother.

The price point Apple has set for its pro apps is insane. As a former employee of a company that produces a rival DAW, I can say that the $200 price (in this and FCP) is going to drive a major shift in the pro and prosumer audio (and video) software industry. A few years ago the "norm" was a $600-900 application with 12-18mo upgrades costing around $200. Now BLAMO, Apple says "$200 is the norm". And they'll win. Because they apple. Within a year we will see Ableton Live, Digital Performer, maybe even ProTools, (and what little other DAWs have survived) all drop in price or start to die out.
This is one of those places where, for better or worse, Apple is driving major change.

Apple really jerked over Logic Pro customers. I paid $500 two years ago for Logic Studio complete boxed package and a few months later they released an update for MainStage to fix bugs. BUGS that broke the software, but you could only get the BUG FIXES by purchasing the Mac App Store version of it. I finally broke down and did it even though I was paying another $30 for something Apple should have issued to me for free, with the only consolation being that I would receive future updates through the Mac App Store. But no, here comes a newer version and they delete the previous and make it another $30. Apple does nothing but screw customers now.

I'm a professional performer and composer and owner of Logic Pro 9 and Mainstage 2. I won't be buying either of these as I can't use my 32-bit Audiounits.

It's a shame Apple don't want my money then...

Not when there are so many available resources. This crops up when you have 24+GB free memory and 14 extra cores.

You've tested this with Logic X? Didn't think so.

That picture doesn't give any idea of the project or the system it's on, you can make Logic or any other DAW give that same error message if your goal is to make a screenshot to troll with.

Does anyone know how this affected people who had already purchased Logic Pro 9 on the App Store? Did they remove Logic Pro 9 altogether and replace it with Logic Pro X or did they let those people with Logic Pro 9 "update" their app and have it become Logic Pro X? If they removed Logic Pro 9 altogether from the AppStore, will there be updates to it in the future for those people?

People who bought Logic 9 from the app store can continue to download it and get updates. Anyone else can buy Logic X but not buy 9. There is no updating in the app store but Apple has been giving Logic 9 refunds to people who bought in the last 30 days.

Do you have any idea about the history of this bug?

Sure, but I'm not going to jump to conclusions about whether it's fixed or not based on one screenshot. Is that your session it's a picture of?

Would you say the same thing if this bug was in the last several versions of Cubase?

Cubase does this too. And PT, and DP.

This upgrade removes your Logic 9 install...

False.

and Logic 9 is no longer available from Apple to download.

Also false. Where do you get this stuff? It keeps 9, and while new customers can't buy 9, people who have it already can download it again.

It's a shame Apple don't want my money then...

By that measure, DP and PT don't want your money either. Like it or not, 32 bit support won't last forever.

gainreduction meter only works with Logic dynamics processors. Midi readout no longer shows what chord you played ( useful on complex harmonies though the algo wasn't perfect... ill miss that)
There is a Waldorf PPG emulator that works great...Depeche Mode used it a lot in 1980-85

I'll probably do like I did last time and eBay my current copy for 1/2 the cost and buy the new version. Just have to make a list of which of my AUs are actually 64 bit before I jump.

Also going to make all side jobs pay me in iTunes cards so my wife doesn't see money leave the bank :D

Cry me a river .....

Seriously, I understand your complaint, but in the big picture, that's nothing.

In the world of music software, getting bent over on upgrades seems to be the norm. Everyone justifies it by claiming they're such a niche market, they can't stay in business otherwise, etc. etc.

I mean, what you're saying here is you bought a $500 boxed recording studio suite and then Apple made you pay out a whopping $30 to get an update to an add-on portion of the product (Mainstage)? So your $500 expense cost you $530 instead by the time you were done.... AND you got the physical media for the main thing, unlike the people who came later buying the App Store edition of Logic Pro.

Yeah, I'm not finding that such a horrible deal, all things considered....

And making you pay full price for the next major version at only $199 (plus that pesky $30 for Mainstage again) doesn't strike me as a bad deal either, really. Sure, we'd all love to get perpetual free upgrades -- but you can still stick with the version you've got if you want, and it's just as usable as it was the day you bought it. Apple's not forcing you to upgrade.

I use jBridgeM for 32-bit VSTs with Studio One 2.5 which is also 64-bit only. Maybe this utility could be modified to also work with AUs in Logic X.

People could try contacting the author of jBridgeM to see if it's feasible.

VE Pro 5 will probably also handle this issue but it's not an inexpensive solution.

Long time user of Logic since L7. I still use Logic 9 to write music in. This update, IMO is a good buy for someone getting into studio/daw work. For me? Maybe in a couple of years but as it is feature-wise. I'll stick with Cubase & Studio One. Just not enough "there" there for me. Of course, YMMV :)

I don't know about you guys but I think this is
A W E S O M E ! ! ! ! !

Can't wait to check it out. Time to get stoked on making beats again.

I was referring to all previous versions sporto. Your corporate favoritism should still be intact. I am sure Apple is thankful for the blind love you have shown them in this thread ad others. So there is that.

And now please please update GarageBand for ios with scrollable guitar frets and horns :)

Most important: Is the sound engine updated? Until Logic 9 it was stuck in the 80's and sounded like crap compared to other modern DAWs. You could even hear artefacts in fade-outs or effect plug-ins.

I don't care much about a new UI as long as they make Logic sound better.

Color changes

I know some people have expressed dislike at the colour changes. As someone who is colour blind I really like the transition to the darker background. I can finally see when tracks are armed for recording without having to double check. Just all over the visual is far more appealing to me and will (I expect) be much less of a visual strain over long sessions. The general brightness of the screen is reduced - I have always preferred white text on a black background to black text on a white background - I find it far easier to read in the long term.

I've not had a chance to play with customisation options for the colour scheme - it would be great if apple allowed users to change things or provided a variety of different themes - maybe thats something they can address in an update.

I really like a lot of what they have done here - will be interesting to see how it plays out in the working environment. The fact that we don't have to remove logic 9 is great.

Any indications of improvements in performance? A similar implementation of FCP X's "pre-rendering and calculation" in Logic Pro?

If yes, this would be a massive boon for my 2010 MBA (2GB Ram!!) that is just barely able to work with 150+ tracks!!

Jam Packs Gone?

The App Store download is only 650MB.

What has happened to all the GB's of sounds that were bundled with the last Logic (including all teh Jam Packs)?

imac symbol

What did you mean is "telling" about the pic being an iMac?

Because the iMac is seen as a"hobby" , educational computer for living room uses, not a PRO workhorse for Groovers & Crafters in the studio. That' s a false assumption, but just how it is in the eyes of most. Mac Pros, multicore Mac Book Pros are for Logic & FCP, iMacs are for iPhoto, iTunes and Garageband is the myth. Funny because iMacs have come such a long way - and are capable computers, but still not taken as seriously. Maybe because an all in one concept goes back to the "personal computer" of the 80ies?
Oh well, let them be! :D If "You don't have to have the newest Mac Pro to run this" is the message, that's a good thing.:apple:

Its telling because the newest version of some of they est known software is not being dispayed on their newest "revolutionary" "can't innovate my a$$" product. It seems to show a lack of confidence or a move out of that area for the Mac Pro

Let me guess...You don't like the new MacPro? ;)

Not much, but that's not why. See above

The iMac is a fine computer if you don't need more than 4 cores and 32GB of RAM but it's no more fantastic than any modern i5/i7 desktop. I work on an iMac at work every day and it's great it does it's job with virtually no noise and a small footprint.
