ProTools uploads to SoundCloud

Also, I believe it's the same eMagic brain trust behind Logic X so don't see any compromises on pro functionality. Will wait to judge as more thorough reviews come out, and I download for myself. Assuming L9 and LX can coexist on my machine.

Call me a miser, but I see shades of FCP X on this one.

First, note that Logic Pro 9 is now gone from the app store, as if X is just another version rather than a dramatically changed app.

Second, note the "upload to soundcloud" feature -- what does that tell you about the target demographic?

Third, note the lack of info (even in the reviews!) about things like video handling, OMF import, and basic MIDI functions, in favour of bragging about new "amazing" features that will make life SOO much easier and keep all those complicated settings out of your way. Ugh.

I'm sure Logic retains most of the nuts and bolts features that make it a workhorse, but the general vibe I'm getting is "Garage Band Pro." And I don't like it.

I'm guessing this means Logic Express is dead, in favour of Garage Band. Pity, as it was far more capable than GB, and far more affordable than Pro.

Logic Express was dropped by Apple when Logic Pro 9 move to the MAS, though some copies were still hanging around in the shops.

With regards to affordability, Logic Pro in the MAS was actually cheaper than the boxed version of Express (in the UK).

Haven't seen anything about leveraging OpenCL to coincide with the 2013 Mac Pro's dual GPUs yet :(

they have just stolen tons of ideas from Ableton from what i can see...

They probably have. But if Apple don't include certain features, people would say that Logic Pro 'doesn't have xxxxx feature'. And when they do include it, people say 'Apple stole xxxxx from xxxxx'.

May I ask what you would have preferred they did?

Second, note the "upload to soundcloud" feature -- what does that tell you about the target demographic?

The upload to Soundcloud is in almost every major DAW now (including the much revered Pro-Tools). The fact is, professionals are now using a number of cloud services to promote and share their work. PreSonus Studio One has SoundCloud and Nimbit export functionality, and I think Cubase has it well.

This has no bearing on an apps "professionalism" or target market. It's just a sign of the times.

Alright, after reading a bunch more, seems my initial reaction is unfounded. The only thing that really bugs me is no 32 bit AU support... I'll have to think about how much I'm willing to spend to upgrade AUs.

Did hell freeze over or did Apple actually learn from their previous mistake? ^_^

I just bought Logic Pro 9 a few months back :'(

Call customer service and say you are a long term Apple customer, feel let down you bought the old version when the new one was right around the corner, and is there anything that can be done? Get a manager on the phone if necessary, and email Tim Cook. Apple is pretty good about trying to make you happy. I doubt it will give you your money back, but it probably will give you the new version.

They couldn't keep the AU 32-64 bridge in there?

I can't really blame them. DP and PT11 both dumped 32 bit support instead of doing a bit bridge, and it seems like users have generally been praising not having a buggy bit bridge (which doesn't make much sense to me since you don't have to use it).

For 32 bit plugins, Vienna Ensemble Pro is still an option for any DAW.

From Apple's page...

"Logic Pro supports OS X Core Audio, so you can choose the audio interface that best suits your needs. That includes top-of-the-line Thunderbolt solutions like the Apogee Symphony I/O connected via a ThunderBridge interface. It provides up to 64 channels of pristine, 192kHz/24-bit audio with ultra-low-latency performance — without a PCI card."

Yup, they're aligning these to the new pro alright. :D

Over the moon about this. And arguably one of Apple's best kept secrets as of late. Close to no substantial or big rumors directly leading up to the release.

Just Great! Definitely easier to keep new software under wraps, than new hardware.

I was hoping Apple was saving Aperture X, Logic X, iWork X and a update to Final Cut X for a special event. This way they could show everyone they are serious about professional users. Oh well. Glad they are at least still working on these.

Maybe some of these will come alongside the release of the new MacPro?
Here's hoping for Aperture 4.0 or X, whatever they decide to call it.

First, note that Logic Pro 9 is now gone from the app store, as if X is just another version rather than a dramatically changed app.

It IS an updated version as opposed to a completely different app. FCX was totally different and didn't open sessions from earlier versions. LPX is a major update but still the same app (supposedly with no features removed) and still compatible.

One's real and one's virtual.

Seriously though, someone who bought 9 last week must pay $199 again now?

I'm sure you can call support and work something out. They'll probably give you a free download code for Logic Pro X. Apple is pretty flexible about these things. Same went for OSX. Just remember, be nice and calm on the phone and they'll help :)

You mean, gasp, people who make music like to share it? Who would have thought?!
