It's disappointing to see that this brand new, redesigned release from Apple is loaded full of excessive, gratuitously Skeuomorphic UI elements. And Main Stage is even worse!

Given that Apple have clearly shown that they're moving away from Skeuomorphism in a big way elsewhere, it seems like Apple's left hand has no clue what the right hand is doing these days. Another sign of a failing company?

Do audio apps really need to look like analogue mix boards from the 1980s for people to understand them? No. And plenty already do not.

Well keep in mind professional apps like this (especially if a rewrite) take many years to develop. The UI probably was developed when Apple UI was steeped in skeumorphism - the change away is recent. So it's probably not really a case a of the left hand and right hand doing different things but old design flavor coming out only slight before new design flavor due to development time of the product.

Note since I haven't used the application myself I can't comment on the excessiveness (or not) of the skeumorphism in this app (though I admit, personally, I was never against having *some* skeumorphism in apps just not excessive amounts of it). It's just that the app was probably designed while skeumorphic design elements were still in vogue at Apple.

Upgrading to X

Need help guys. Feeling bad, I couldn't grab X from app store immediately. I bought Logic 9 around 25 days ago (should have waited). Now do I have to pay 200$ again to upgrade to X? Thanks.

Call Apple immediately. There are a few users here who purchased 9 recently and already were able to get the newest version by asking Apple. They only bought a few days ago but you are almost a month so call right now.

And one of the best features, stops all the annoying "they're going to ruin it like FCX" comments.

The best feature so far is that it seems that they didn't botch it like FCPX.

I'd rather wait for the polished version, then have to pay for the alpha version, and wait for updates to bring it to Beta, then even more updates to bring it to primetime.

I'd like to buy

Ok then I would like to know if anyone can tell me if I can use itunes vouchers to buy logic x or do I need a credit card?

Why not ask Apple? We're basically just a bunch of guys on the internet.

Thanks for your inputs guys.

Here's the update. I couldn't actually call for some reason and instead dropped an email through apple.com (application support).

To my surprise, the response was pretty quick(within 10 mins) and the customer service was kind enough to understand my situation and issued me a refund for my previous purchase of logic pro 9. I can buy the logic pro X as a new purchase and can expect the refund in 5-10 business days (hopefully).

From my side, I can confirm that as one time exception, refund up to 1 month of purchase is possible.

I wonder if they screwed you audio guys like they did us the video guys with the "X" transition...

They did that when they put Logic 9 on the app store and didn't give store credit for the logic pro studio/express licenses. Not to mention integrating logic express and logic 9 screwing the people who bought express then the studio upgrade.

It makes me feel a bit gun-shy. I will probably wait a month or 2 before I buy it. I need to get a moog Sub Phatty first anyway. Been working in ableton almost exclusively these days anyway.

That's pretty rad of them, but at the same time, completely understandable that they'd refund you, 9 is pretty old now, Apple has got their moneys worth for that software.

Funny, I had a play with Logic Express just yesterday, first time in ages, and was reflecting on how un-Apple it was compared to other updated apps. I'll be honest, I didn't find Express massively intuitive, so I'm keen to try X.

Now all we need, as others have said, is Aperture X, with its companion app (which allows for on-the-road importing, rating and editing, all syncable later?). I'm enjoying Aperture at the moment but I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone that had outgrown iPhoto, due to the steep learning curve.

Interesting times indeed, as Apple seemingly reposition the Mac as the ultimate luxury add-on to the iPhone/iPad lifestyle. But where will it leave actual pros? Hopefully still somewhere important in Apple's heart.

This is fantastic!! I'll have to test it on one of my secondary computers to see how well it works. Sounds good so far, as long as the "pro" features are all still functional :)

Lol, 5 people have already rated it. Four 5 stars (fanboys) and one 1 star (disgruntled windows user)

Anyone had the chance to use on a 13 inch (non retina) macbook pro screen yet, is it still as condensed on lower resolutions as previous versions have been? Or does the new UI and full screen mode make it a lot better for workflow on a 13 inch?

Can anyone answer any of these questions for me, i'd like to know if these bugs in L9 have been fixed?

1) Does Bounce In Place work in realtime on External Instruments or tracks with the i/o plugin?

2) Is the midi jitter fixed? (See: Eigenlabs Forum)

3) Is all input monitoring still on one core?

4) Does sending outputs from a multi out plugin (e.g. kontakt/maschine) still process all the plugins on the auxes on the same core?

5) Is the GUI delay compensated so that the meters etc are in time when using heavy plugins on the master etc? This also means: is the automation now ALWAYS accurate, regardless of sending certain tracks to busses, and whatever's on the master bus?

6) Do live midi tracks (triggering external instruments) still sound 'early' in 'Low Latency Mode'?

7a) How does it fair CPU wise overall, compared to Logic Pro 9.... especially on older machines?

7b) How snappy is it, and the GUI? Is there still a graphics plugin issue - e.g. hanging with Steven Slate's VTM? This didn't affect everyone, of course, but generally it was pretty sluggish in general.

8) Does AU format somehow support midi out now, so that Audio Units can output midi, and we can truly use Maschine properly?

9) Is low latency performance (64 buffer and under) improved?

10) Are more than 16 threads supported?!

Cheers!

Ed

Yes, you can pay for app store stuff with iTunes cards. I usually stock up with cards when they're on sale, and therefore get a virtual 20% discount with the app store when buying stuff.

I'm curious how many non-musicians buy Logic Pro just to play around with while having dreams of being the next deadmau5. Especially with it being a hella cheaper than software like Ableton Live.

Just look in any Guitar Center store. a LOT more peoplw who are just playing around at home than pros I'd guess by a 100 to 1 ratio at least.
