quick question - my apologies if this has been mentioned:

has the new spec incorporate sata 3 - 6gb/s in the HDD slot?

the reason being if it doesnt i will hold off, buying ssd from owc for the new SF2000,

ok screw this im weak -with discount im really goin for the upper end 15" mdel

my macbook pro is only 6weeks old - i now should of waited but my laptop (windows) was taken, thus i made the transition to mac - now i really want this one.. i see i can sell this for almost as much as i paid for it

does anyone know if any retail store in the UK have these in yet? was looking to travel down today to either bluewater, lakeside or norwich.

Many thanks.

I'm glad I waited...

Although I would love to get a glimse of how the MBPs in 2012 would look like - if they get a new design..

15": Basically it's $400 for an upgraded video card. The barely negligible gb/cpu bump isn't noticeable. If you don't play high-end FPS games on your laptop you don't need to waste $400. Even with the "upgraded" video card it will still barely be able to maintain 30fps at native res. That's what desktops are for.

Wait for the refurb 15" models and you'll have a decent laptop.

notice the battery times. I bet its the more accurate test. Expect to see 7-8 hrs on the 13".

Im almost tempted to buy a 13", but I wanted the increase in resolution, wtf.

Hopefully it's 7 hours based on Apple's new testing standards, that they used on the last round of MBAs...?

If it is, their new tests better be pessimistic on battery loss. My 2010 (which apparently I get worse battery life than others with the 2010 cause I've seen better quotes posted on the MBP forums) gets about 7.5 hours with my use. Which is still slightly better than what Apple is claiming on those.

Honestly, combo the possible worse graphics card (to about being equal cause that's the best I've seen people say it is) I now am glad I got the 2010 and would pick it over the new one. Yeah, the new processor is nice and I like the thunderbolt port. But battery life for me is very important as well as having a capable graphics card (I might have been willing to slide on the graphics card as the jury is out on how good/bad it is, but going down 3 hours in battery life? Or even a half hour if their tests mimic real life more now. Unless that 7 hours is with firefox on which is much more battery draining than Safari which I use when my MBP is unplugged. Then I'd say maybe the battery actually improved).

I'm going to buy the top-of-the-line 15".
Question is:
- 500gb 7200rpm or 128gb ssd? (is it possible to change the HD later by yourself without losing the warranty?)
- 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 or 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
- glossy or antiglare screen?

I went with:
  • 500gb 7200rpm - I may install a larger SSD down the road, but 128gb is too small, and the larger versions are overpriced
  • 2.2GHz - Not worth the $250 for a very small bump, $ many be better spent on RAM upgrade depending on your usage
  • Antiglare - I have used both and prefer the AG. However the reflection on the glossy is not as bad of an issue as some would have you believe

Get 500gb @7200rpm and change to SSD in one year once the prices are human.

As for glossy or AG, you got to try them live. Otherwise read the countless threads on the matter.

Seriously is no one Disapointed with res of the 13

I am DYING w/ this crap.. DOA xoom has that same res and that crap is only 10 inch!!!!

If you use your computer for anything more than browsing stupid facebook, this 13 inch is an epic failure. EPIC!!!!!!

This makes upgrading to the low-end 15" MBP virtually pointless unless you use a program that can utilize all four cores.

Upgrading from a 2006 MacBook with 32 bit Core Duo is pointless if you don't use the CPU power. On the other hand, you don't need _one_ program using four cores; if you have four programs that each use one core then all four cores are used. And software that needs the processor power _will_ be multithreaded nowadays. So many people will be very happy with this. And I'd love to have half the power at home that I have at work, instead of one quarter only :D

battery life = new test that apple uses... so quite complaining. Its the same as before... just more accurate.

I'll say again: We don't know if this is true!!!

The batteries have not changed. Its still 63.5 watt-hours for the 13" MBP.

But we don't know whether the HW consumes more power than before
or whether they are using new test procedures. Either can explain why
the spec has dropped from 10 hours to 7 hours.

We need a 3rd party to run the same test on the old and new 13" MBP
and give us the results. If the results are the same, that would be
wonderful. But I still worry that the new MBP uses more power
for the same functionality.

mine:

2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X2GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200
8x Double-Layer SuperDrive
MBP 17"HR Antiglare WS Display

for 2344CAD with education discount.

was really hoping for the 16 gig sdd :/ oh well

Me too...anything bringing Pro laptops closer to what they are doing with Air and the "Instant On" would have been innovative (and prob 2012 but who knows...).

I may still buy on though maybe not "full boat" like i was thinking.

$1k for the 512MB SSD...ouch.

thank you :)
I'm going with 8gb ddr3, 2.2 and antiglare.
I still have doubts about the HD... the question is: do I maintain the warranty if I replace by myself the existing HDD with a SSD?

funny all this talk of thunderbolt, high performance graphics, hd graphics, and still no bluray.

Not funny at all. Very logical. Blu-Ray is dead. It was dead on arrival. The future is streaming and cloud storage. I donated all my DVDs and gave away my Blu-Ray player and my video consumption is so much easier and more organized now. Everything stores on my external 2TB and streams to my Apple TV or syncs to my iPhone/iPad. Yes it's 720p, but I don't care. haha. Why would anyone want to hoard a bunch of discs. Unless you use them as coasters.

admit its HEAVY but its better than the CRAP thats been sold within the NEW MBP!

no screen issues with mine mate. and BTW if you ever spend time in a apple store,

and you’ll release the issues the MBP have to this date! (im an X employee!)

I'm pleased that you enjoy your Dell and you think it's more desirable than a MacBook.

I genuinely don't mean to offend you, but are you a bit, you know, 'special'?

The problem is the hype we've had in the last few days. High expectations lead to disappointment. This release was way overhyped with tons of changes that never saw the light of day.

I was seriously expecting all the whining today. There were some nice surprises (the GPU in the 15"/17"), some not so nice non-surprise (13" going back to Intel graphics) and some very disappointing surprise apparent downgrades (battery life ? 13" not getting the same resolution as the Air ?)

However, it does seem like Thunderbolt lacks "thunder". No one seems to really care about it. That's a definite LOL.

I dont see how hype based on fanboy speculation can be blamed on Apple. None of the sky high wishes and dreams posted over the past few weeks have come directly from Apple. Its best to take rumors as 99% ******** when it comes to what is going to be in an unannounced upgrade otherwise they will always disappoint.

Considering that Apple's such a braggart about the battery, I think the tests might prove to be more accurate. Sandy Bridge processors use less power for the performance so it'd be rather asinine to go down really

I already mentioned this, but the battery life probably hasn't gone done. When the released the new MBAs they used new, realistic benchmarks. 6 - 7 was realistic for the 2010 MBP. I know, it's what I'm typing this one.

Anyway, I'm disappointed in the lack of USB 3. I have some peripherals I've been eying. Like others from before I'm also disappointed that Thunderbolt's in the Minidisplay port now since there's no Apple Cinema Display to Daisy Chain it with.

Huh?

"If you’re a video editor, imagine connecting high-performance storage, a high-resolution display, and high-bit-rate video capture devices to handle all the post-production for a feature film — right on your notebook. Thunderbolt I/O technology allows you to daisy-chain up to six new peripherals, such as the Promise Pegasus RAID* or LaCie Little Big Disk,* or five peripherals and an Apple LED Cinema Display."

Unless I'm missing something, you can daisy chain to anything you can have an adapter go to. The monitor appears to just have to be the last item in the chain.
