The update looks solid, but as with any new Apple product launch, the fanboys negrep it oblivion. I like all the features very much, even though I would have voted for USB3 instead of Thunderbolt, but basic-anti glare screen should be again a no-cost option, not a $200 upgrade.

Also I was hoping that they would allow for the optical drive to be switched into HDD, in which case I would have ordered a small 64GB SSD for system and replace optical drive with 500-750GB HDD for storage.

That said, I'll be ordering the higher-end 15'' with a student discount shortly.

i am betting the higher screen resolution option was tested on a mac pro with that intel graphic chip and it ran like complete crap. so they opted out of it. that intel graphics chip will be fine on the 1280x800. Good luck to those hooking it up to an external monitor trying to play video at its higher resolutions. its going to chug chug chug like every other intel graphics chip at hi res.

Good update, love everything - except that optical drive. I really want to sell my late 2008 MBP to get a new one ... but with a redesign next year, hopefully they'll throw out that optical drive by then.

Indeed. I was looking forward to a redesign that would have utilized the SuperDrive space in a more useful fashion.

I noticed that the battery life went down to 7 hours in all models. For those of you who have the 2010 13" model, did it really get up to 10 hours of battery?

5-6 at most.

Ugh.....13" display sux

Well, I wanted to upgrade my 13" MBP to the refreshed 13".

I do a lot of web design on my 13", and the resolution is just too low. Was really hoping for a 1440X900 screen on the refresh like everyone else. The i7 processor would have been more than adequate.

Woke up this morning. Rolled out of bed and looked at the new MBP specs. Got my credit card out and purchased the high end 15" MBP with the 1650 X 1050 display.

Do I have something to whine about? Yes. Will I whine about it? No. I stopped purchasing Macs long ago because they were different or cool. I purchase them now because all of the tools I use are OSX based, and I'm too damn lazy/old to relearn windows tools.

Life is good. :D :apple::apple::apple:

OVERPRICED. FFS.

When is it ever NOT overpriced?

I am buying the 17'' MBP online now... What is the advantage of the 2.3ghz vs the 2.2ghz? Who would the upgrade be good for?

Just ordered a 15" MBP i7 quadcore 2.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz, 128GB SSD, Hi-Res Antiglare Display + TimeCapsule 1TB.

can someone answer, please?

Sorry to repost, but I really want to know

How is 1440 x 900 on a 15" LESS resolution (in terms of pixels, etc.) than 1280 x 800 on a 13"? Isn't it more pixels per square inch or whatever, as in 113 is a higher number than 110 (see below)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density#Apple_Inc.

I am definitely done toting around a 15" and will either buy this 13" or wait even longer (I also have a large desktop), so I have to know!

Sorry, but that's just very misinformed speculation seeing how this card can power much higher resolutions than this through the Mini Display Port. Frame buffers have not been a problem for well over 10 years, especially not at a resolution we ran back in the days of 16 MB video cards on CRT monitors (1280x1024 or 1600x1200).

Also, how do you explain this same GPU being capable of pushing the 1920x1200 resolution of the 17" ?

The reason the resolution stayed the same is not because of the GPU, not by a long shot.

How strange! Just waiting for my asus G53jw to arrive today! Was going to send it back if the macbook pro update was worth it but to be honest i think i'll stick to the asus. Love apple, i have a iphone 4, ipad and did have a imac but the macbook pro is just not worh the premium.

Those Asus laptops are great. The G73 is a fantastic computer which can handle games as well as pro audio and video apps with ease.
You made a good buy there.

looks like the 15inch is going to be the one for me :/ the 17inch is imo, a rip off.
what do you people recommend? 5400rpm or 7200rpm? I'd be pretty content with 500gb but I just wanna know

How long does it usually take for new models to become available on sites like Amazon? I'm looking to cash in on all of the Amazon gift cards I got for Christmas (and avoid sales tax) :)

Reasonable updates, but a bit out of line with the price for the 15", even with the Apple premium.

My 07 Macbook still runs great except for struggling on a loaded Logic Pro project, but that's understandable. Looks like I'll wait until the next update and figure it out then.

Thunderbolt icon

The thunderbolt icon is dangerously close to the international symbol for high voltage.

Before you pencil in a major redesign for 2012, remind yourself that, merely two nights ago, such a redesign was rumored for today. Don't get me wrong, it could very well happen. But, certainly don't refrain from picking up one of these MBPs on the basis that a redesign is a foregone conclusion for 2012.

Especially if Steve goes x.x
Also, remember the golden rule, never buy a Rev A!

Yesterday nikonrumors.com had an interesting Light Peak rumor...

Nikon D4 to support Light Peak?

Once again, though, the pro cameras will always be limited by the speed of the recording media when dishing up RAW files, even over LightPeak/Thunderbolt. Currently that limit is 90 MB/s on the most expensive CF cards.

It will be faster than having USB2 (tops out at 60 MB/s) on the cameras but we'll still be limited by the media it is stored on. So you'd get the same speed as if you just bought a LightPeak enabled card reader.
