I ordered an 11" Air when it was released, but I was quite worried that I'd regret my purchase when the new 13" MBP's came out. Now I'm very happy I bought it - only 2h more battery than the Air, worse screen, no SSD, still that useless Superdrive built in and so on.. Even the graphics casd is quite bad.

Sure, the MBP is quite a bit faster, but that's not what is important for me personally. I'll hold on to my precious Air for a couple of more months and hope for a processor (and backlit keyboard) upgrade later this year.

PS - The Air really makes the 13" feel HUUUGE and like it weighs a ton. It will be hard ditching the Air for an MBP even at the next update :(

Sooooooo as per almost every Apple release, is this thunderbolt BS gonna require a new adapter for VGA/DVI projectors? I work in education, and this is a huge annoyance with Apple's Mac updates.

This is going to cause a huge rush on all the Thunderbolt peripherals out there.
I bet those poor suckers with $700 pcs with USB3 ports are really upset.

This is my few bits about the new MacBooks

Dear Mr. Jobs, Dear Apple Designers, Dear Apple Fellowers!

1) in general: Apple does an AMAZING job in sense of design, ideas, etc. - respect for that!!!!! we (still) love you!
2) however, "we" (your customers) are slightly unhappy about the current release in sense of performance/technological evolution. why? ... BECAUSE:

a) one problem is since several years competitors are offering quad core laptops. FINALLY you also offer those. - THANK YOU for that! ... i was awaiting this already in 2010/2009 :) ... since it didn't happen til 2010, i've migrated to mac pro 8-core for my daily work. (and i love it) ;) i personally cannot understand people for giving so much applause for FINALLY having quad core CPU on apple laptops. - this (almost) is an old hat already, despite of the fact that intel did an amazing job on the new mobile core-i CPUs.

b) having quad core CPUs also on 13" for additional money would really have been cool!!!!!! in days of parallels and vmware, anything below 4-core is out of discussion for me and many others.

c) the display resolution on the 13" macbook: c'mon, is this REALLY the best you can do? you have shown better on MacBook Air !!!!!!! at least offer something better for extra money.

d) the rumors about SSD at least for system startup is an amazing idea. - think about it.

e) many of us are PRO users. - we pay PRO money, for PRO products. - personally i'm not only disappointed about the 13" display resolution, but also truly expected full HD support (at least as an option) for Macbook Pro 15". other competitors are offering this, too. it's not magic.

f) i am currently running a 2007 MBP, me and many others really have to think twice before (maybe) investing on the 2011 model. - 4 years of evolution in between, nevertheless the "felt" evolution is maybe 1-2 years. this is why many of us hesitate on a upgrade. because of this "feeling" i not only have skipped 2010 updates, but might even skip 2011.

i will have to sleep a night over it and decide tomorrow, wheter to wait for another year until the 2012 upgrade or now upgrading to the new MBP.

what a lame update.... i mean come one... hd graphics?? 7 hours of battery versus the 10 old ones? same design? Its been so many years and we were waiting for an upgrade not a downgrade..

How long does it usually take for new models to become available on sites like Amazon? I'm looking to cash in on all of the Amazon gift cards I got for Christmas (and avoid sales tax) :)

On Amazon, the 17" shows as in stock now (4 left), and the others are available for pre-order. Just search by model #.

Are you on drugs?
Biggest performance gain EVER?
800% faster
The Fboys are alive and well on this thread!

Nope, but my question is thus: Are YOU on drugs?

Try doing a 3DMarkVantage benchmark on these machines and compare to the previous generation.

Also, like I've been telling many people, please actually look up the specs of the components.

Its really sad when the mainstream actually deny an architecture movement from dual core to quad core nets no performance gain. Makes me chuckle a little.

Once again, Apple has failed to put out a compelling product. I've been a Mac user for the last 25 years, and will continue to be so. However, I see no compelling reason to update from my 2006 17" 2.33 C2D and will likely purchase a Windows computer to meet my mobile needs.

I have also been a Mac user for 25 years, and I think this is actually the first compelling product release in several years, at least since the C2D systems first arrived. While Windows has largely closed the gap on MacOS, Apple still has the superior product and I'm pretty excited at the prospect of replacing my 2008 aluminum MB with a new 13" MBP. Now I just have to convince my wife that I really need a new laptop.

MBP 13" or MBA 13"

i'm going to get a macbook soon but i'm not sure whether i should go with the MBP 13 or MBA 13 (or even MBA 11). any help?

So better to keep an old analog VGA? yeah! Education...

You can plug your existing MiniDisplayport adapters.

don't bother upgrading to 2.3ghz. Too overpriced for such a small bump in clockspeed that you probably wouldn't notice. I'd take the ram upgrade over the cpu upgrade. But what do you do on your computer that uses 8 gb of ram? Most people would be fine with 4 gb.

Mostly 3D graphics, CAD maya ex.... Although I'm strongly considering upgrading to the solid state drive instead. I've heard the solid state on the Macbook Air makes a huge difference, given what I do would I notice a significant speed bump with a solid state drive?

Cannot agree more here..

The battery is the same, they changed the way to calculate it.

Wrong comparison: Compare MBP 13 vs. MBA 11 and MBP 15 vs. MBA 13.

MBP: Much faster processor, bigger but slower hard drive, more RAM, upgradeable.
MBA: Much less weight, much less size, smaller pixels are bad if you are >40 years.

Just got back from Best Buy and was able to exchange my Core2 MBP for the new i5 MBP model.

About to crack open the box and copy all my files back to it.

Pulled the trigger on a 13" MBP and 128SSD in the end.

Decided for mobility over speed. Will carry out 8gb RAM upgrade on delivery.

Can't wait, looking like 7days shipping too!
