This is the biggest performance refresh Apple has *ever* made. In highly threaded applications performance will easily be up to 400% to 800% faster now. Thats better than the normal 15% performance increase that people seem to love on refreshes... yet people seem to under appreciate this.

The graphics are incredible. 480 stream processors in the high end 15". So what? Well the previous version had what, 48 stream processors? Thats a 1000% performance increase.

I will never understand people, they just don't know "incredible" when they see it.

wow only 7 hour battery life that sucks

From Apple's website:

"Apple is using a new, more rigorous battery test that measures the results you can expect in the real world — like surfing your favourite sites in a coffee shop or catching up on the latest web videos. Even using this new test, MacBook Pro delivers amazing battery life. For your real life."

change of test = different results. They claim its more rigorous, people rarely got the 10 hours of the previous generation that was advertised so maybe they made it more realistic?

I'm pretty upset over the new 13" MBP, no upgrade for the display and i was really hoping for an ssd upgrade after hearing last weeks rumors. Well, i sold my 2010 13 " MBP on eBay ($1025) and now im headed over to the apple store to get the new one. :):)

15" and 17" are too big for me, though i'm jealous of there Quad-core processors.

Overall it was a disappointing "refresh" by apple, especially for the 13" MBP. ITS A PRO MODEL, it should have at least have a better display than the 13" air, wtf were their engineers thinking

Now to find my credit card, lol

Your actually saying the air out performs the current high end mbp's?

Lol... and apparently a netbook outperforms an alienware.

If you really mean that, then say it!

I did, I said they are "implementing it". That's what implementing means! If I meant they were using it in a current version, I'd have said "they have implemented" past tense.

I understood it. You did say VLC/Mplayer implement functions from this framework, which is not true. The ffmpeg-project does it, and the Video LAN Project devs are the first developers which will use the new API via ffmpeg. I'm sure MPlayer will follow.

I didn't say they implement, I said they are "implementing". As in working on the feature in order to ship it in a future version.

Look, English might not be your first language and that's fine, just drop it. You misunderstood the word.

Ok so I have a question for you guys, I want to buy a 15in 2.2 but I need to keep the cost below 2500 and theirs an option to upgrade to the 2.3 and an option to upgrade to 8gbs of ram and given my budget I can only choose one. How much of a difference in speed will you notice between the 2.2 and the 2.3 and is it enough to justify holding off on upgrading ram? Thanks!

Sorry, industry analysts, Wall Street Journal and other media publications are not fanboy speculation.

Your right they are speculators and guessers which in many ways is worse...none of the recent rumors have had any ties to Apple they have simply been some analysts guesses designed to drive attention to their articles and the rest just filter down from there. Often the "analysts" even go so far as to attribute their speculation to sites like this one or Apple Insider...recent WSJ articles for instance were as late as last week guessing about instant on, ssd standard, etc...all based on nothing but hype. The WSJ also posted the "supposed" specs of the 2nd generation ipad, half of which will likely be wrong. The current big rumor is a 3rd generation ipad by christmas, I guarantee you it will show up in at least 2-3 "media publications" but that doesn't make it legitimate. Hype and speculation brings buzz and attracts attention which brings in increased traffic and ad revenue but it in no way legitimizes the content.

Don't pay the $250 for the 0.1ghz speed upgrade... complete waste. Pay the $200 for the ram.

Kind of himmed and hawed a bit when I read the official specs this morning. Was originally hoping for a high res option on the 13". Probably would have went that route, regardless of the disappointing graphics.

Ended up ordering a high end 15. Way more than I wanted to spend to replace my iMac but in spite of the crazy price, I do feel that it will probably be worth it. In fact, I think the high end pros are where this update really shines. The 13" continues to be Apple's red headed step child (though the SB will be a very nice improvement for light users who want a fantastic portable rig). Considering for the same price yesterday I would have got a substantially slower CPU with half the cores and a substantially slower GPU, I think it's pretty great. I'll throw the 128gb intel ssd I have laying around in it and have a pretty capable notebook for work and play.

Excited for its (hopefully) next week arrival!
:D

Everything > 30 FPS is nearly impossible to recognize for the human eye (i.e. too fast). That is the reason, why most movies are available @ 30 FPS or less. The european norm for the framerate in movies and other TV productions is 25 FPS, and i heard not many complaints about this framerate.

*sigh*

You don't know what you're talking about. Movies are acceptable with only 24 fps because each frame has motion blur by definition...1/24th of a second is captured by each frame...including any motion that occurs. The illusion of motion is possible starting at around 18 fps if motion blur is included. If you were to turn your head while watching (against the motion of the source), then the illusion would break at 18 fps. The 24 fps of film is considered a "safety" point.

30 FPS video (TV) sources are the same way. For that matter, so are 60 FPS video sources, although there is less visible motion blur because there is less motion captured per frame.

Unless motion blur is being applied by the game in question, 30 fps in a game is NOT the equivalent of 30 fps of video or film...

The human eye can recognize disturbances in a frame rate as small as 1/200th of a second. (if a screen flashes an image for only 1/200th of a second, you would not only recognize the flash, but also be able to identify the image itself with some considerable detail).

The realistic limit for motion recognition is somewhere between 60 and 100 fps without motion blur, depending on the person, and depending on how "stable" that frame rate is. The average person could recognize a difference between a 60 fps source and a 120 fps source on a screen that is refreshing at 120 hz. The screen's physical refresh rate is, ultimately, the maximum "necessary" fps for a game or any other source. There is no difference between 50 fps and 15000 fps sources when displayed on a screen with a 50 hz refresh rate.

Most LCD monitors have a redraw rate between 60 and 240 fps. With a fast-motion source (like a camera panning in a TV show, or a video game, for example), the average person would be able to easily see the "stuttering" of a 60 fps display when sitting next to a 240 fps display if both are playing a source that is significantly faster than 60 fps (120, for example).

Play SC2 at 30 fps and then play it at 60 FPS and you're going to see (and feel) a difference.

Hyperbole at its best ....

Get real, those numbers are totally overblown and misleading.

upgrate to 128GB SSD

Or you could save your own money and retire that way.
Why do you need GOV to do it for you?

I actually like VAT (MwSt in Germany.)

It keeps the costs of living relatively low and provides a useful social system. Sure, it means that I consume roughly 20% less on a item-per-item basis, but it means that I get 8 weeks paid vacation per year and retirement that equals roughly 70% of my post-tax income (as does almost everyone else.)

I'll gladly pay 20% "extra" for a MBP any day.

okay so i admit defeat on calling lightpeak fake. ugly logo imo though

but damn hahah i love how everyone expected higher res screens, new case design, liquid metal.... remember people this is apple

and ugh higher price in canada...eff

thunderbolt iPad2

What does anybody think of thunderbolt being the mystery peripheral on the iPad 2?

Not funny at all. Very logical. Blu-Ray is dead. It was dead on arrival. The future is streaming and cloud storage. I donated all my DVDs and gave away my Blu-Ray player and my video consumption is so much easier and more organized now. Everything stores on my external 2TB and streams to my Apple TV or syncs to my iPhone/iPad. Yes it's 720p, but I don't care. haha. Why would anyone want to hoard a bunch of discs. Unless you use them as coasters.

maybe you have a rubbish home theater system and don't care about 1080p hd and hd surround sound audio. but some people have a nice hi quality systems and to them it makes a huge difference in watching a blu-ray vs streaming content.

btw i am not one of those people.

RAM question

So I just bought the new high end 15"er and now I'm looking on Newegg for a compatible third-party RAM (8GB) but not sure what kind I need. Could someone tell me what kind of RAM is compatible for the new MBPs?

I can't get past the fact they didn't increase the resolution of the 13" to match that of the MacBook Air. Not even as an extra cost option.

Lol... and apparently a netbook outperforms an alienware.

Apparently you didn't read my reply correctly, i said that the 13" macbook air has a better display than the new 13" MBP that they released today. I was expecting that apple would at least upgrade the display from 1280 by 800 (native resolution) to the current 13" Air which has a 1440 by 900 (native).

I am well aware that the MBP outperforms the Air. Read my post correctly!!!
