I know that the MobileMe update has been released through Software Update, but it doesn't show up in mine! Not even if I go to the .Mac System Preferences like it says. If anyone can help me, please do, because I am stuck.

That's because there is no mobileme yet.

Just until some weeks ago, almost nobody took mac.com serious: too expensive, not good enough.

Now with mobileme, so many complain about the silly domain me.com, complain about the same high price, but show highest interest, and expectations.

Now 12 hours of web-downtime later, me-esteem is about to crash.

This seems just so surreal...
 
I understand that this is a major transition, but I'm really pissed about this. I really hope that SJ is firing some people right now, for being total idiots!

We've been over this several times. If the service can't cope now due to server load, how will it cope tomorrow?

It's clearly NOT related to how many people are using the service. It's an inherent flaw with the code that needs to be fixed.

Dave, you cannot attempt to drive a car when all the tires haven't been attached. Oh, and are you there on Apple's programming team, you have no idea what problems Apple is having. What I do know is that people here have read enough of the threads to know that there is a delay and their may be a problem somewhere but they still take the liberty to try and login anyway.

When the service is ready it should be working fine no matter how many try to login. Also it's very reasonable and generally requested that a 24hr delay will take place during maintenance from any company.

I think the feeling is that mac.com worked 24 hours ago.

Now we don't have me.com nearly 15 hours after it was promised to us.

It's inconvenient not getting a service you pay for.

Other complaints are best served for another thread.

.mac may have been crap/overpriced and MobileMe may have a silly name/logo but that has absolutely nothing to do with MobileMe not working as we were told it would.
 
What Apple is doing today is ridiculous. They should have tested the migration path and documented all necessary steps. I am an IT Pro and I know. It's my job to migrate infrastructures. If I told my customers that during an upgrade their systems won't be available, they would shoot me!!!
Please don't start defending Apple. Try to be objective here. Their problems today show incompetence...I am really surprised.

Fan boy or not, a migration path is a migration path. And if you can't do that properly and disrupt a paid service well beyond SLA's, when all you do is software and hardware engineering, what does that mean about everything else!?

Like I said in a previous post, they seem to be all about sales now, and that's not really the way to go (as they of all organisations should know! - prime Buss School example)

That is not true. I have been there done that. When you go through a major system upgrade you are most vulnerable when you are coming back up. The more people you have hammering your system as it is coming back up, the more problems you run into and I have seen situations where all traffic had to be completely blocked to get the system up and let it breathe before opening the flood gates. Again this is true when your system is new and it has issues which need to be ironed out. And Me.com is in this situation right now. This was not a simple upgrade. It was a major overhaul which probably involved moving a lot of customer data around. This is what usually takes a lot more time that you plan/anticipate. The last thing they want to do is bring the new system up without all the customer data and start a panic because people think their data is lost.

I'd put money on the fact that there's just one trainee trying to work out what's wrong, and the rest of them have bunked off work early
 
By contrast - migrating all my work / sites / emails / contract / whatever is VASTLY different. Your little comparison dig was patently absurd.


As is your downtime-is-hurting-my-business straw man. You have a collection of home pages on a CONSUMER web hosting service and an e-mail account. Nothing more.

Nobody places orders on your business site (if indeed you actually have one), they would have to call or e-mail you. They have to do this because .mac does not provide database support to store/process customer information.

It doesn't have this functionality because it wasn't designed for business use, as has been stated over and over again by those on this forum. You hurt your business the moment you chose .mac to host it online.

Don't blame Apple for your lack of foresight. .mac is not a business product, never has been, and no promises were ever made to you by Apple. Complain as a customer who has been inconvenienced if you like, but stop selling this ".mac is a mission critical service" crazy. Nobody's buying.

So you think that the service collapsed at what is considered to be (internationally) the time when there is the least internet traffic in the world?

You also seem to think that somehow the MobileMe update that was released by Apple is to blame (despite it being identical to the existing .mac preference pane bar small text changes and a new icon for iDisk).

It's quite clearly not a load issue - .mac was working fine last night, even with extra high demand as users wanted to see it close down.

Remember how they delayed the start of the transition by two hours? That to me signals that there were problems from the onset.
 
I wish people would stop trying to login and bog down the server. Why do they keep reporting here that they can't login when they know the system transition is not complete, it's really irritating. Many of you trying to login are contributing to the delay, let it go for now so maybe it will be possible for Apple to be ready for the iPhone launch tomorrow.

I think everyone should just not log in for at least a half hour, but I don't know, everyone seems to eager to check out MobileMe. Anyone wanna try not going to me.com?

That's about the jist of it.

I also feel that many people, like me, cannot fathom how Apple could not have prepared for this. It's like no one on this project have ever heard the term "transparency". This should have been a seamless transition, bottom line. But it clearly isn't.

I have already submitted in my feedback comments to Apple that the MobileME project manager be fired immediately.

again, me.com came up during the night in much of the world, early morning in other significant markets. I don't see how the "abnormal load" can be responsible for it. The service will need to cope with all the traffic, because a push service is always in use.

You also mention large amounts of data.

ALL users should be transferred from .mac to me.com now. Apple would not bring the site up/down hundreds of times to test that.
 
Yeah? Well as you can see, my name is only five characters and I wasn't able to sign up for garry@mac.com for whatever reason - but I have managed to get the me.com equivalent.

Ahh, you know what? Now that I think about it, I signed up back when it was still iTools. I wonder if when it switched from iTools to .mac, the usernames had to be at least 6 characters long. That's a possibility.
