What I don't understand is why people are running to sign up with their credit cards, etc whenever the site launches for 5 seconds.

Don't complain later when you have 10 charges on your card...

I'm not signing up for ANYTHING until there is at least an hour or so of stability

I signed up in order that I'd get a good name @me.com. I managed to snag garry@. If I get charged 10 times then Apple will have to refund nine, won't they?

They will have to refund you, yes.

It looks like I've been charged twice (the second time being successful).

I wish people would stop trying to login and bog down the server. Why do they keep reporting here that they can't login when they know the system transition is not complete, it's really irritating. Many of you trying to login are contributing to the delay, let it go for now so maybe it will be possible for Apple to be ready for the iPhone launch tomorrow.

We've been over this several times. If the service can't cope now due to server load, how will it cope tomorrow?

It's clearly NOT related to how many people are using the service. It's an inherent flaw with the code that needs to be fixed.

you know you could have just signed up for an @mac.com account a week ago and had it transferred?

I do but, as I posted earlier, .mac accounts (at least when I last checked, over a year ago) forced your username to be between 6-12 characters. The MobileMe signup allows 3-12 characters which is probably the only reason I got the one I did.

From what Cara, a known Apple employee, has been told by those she called intracompany is that MobileMe is suppose to go live before July 11 at 8AM PST. So don't expect it to be up till at least tonight.

Sorry if anyone else already mentioned this. I'm not reading this entire thread to find out and search is garbage.

I think she means that is their best estimate based on how the fixes are currently going.

If it wasn't going to be launched until 8AM tomorrow, they would have simply kept www.mac.com and www.me.com on maintenance screens and also they would have stated that sooner.

A thought for all the apologists at 13:40 PDT:

What would a professional, high performance, thrilling transition look like for all of you?

Probably nothing like what we are experiencing

I know and trust Cara but given that the me.com login page keeps popping up from time to time, coupled with Apple's policy of hardly ever launching anything early I think that MobileMe will be up and running as soon as they figure out how to fix it! That might be a few more minutes or another day.

It's very unlikely that that causes a problem. It's only a small group of users trying to log in (much smaller than the regular server load). It should be able to handle hundreds of thousands users login in. It's been posted earlyer here, it's a software problem.

Therefore it might be risky to apply for a new account with your CC at this early moment, but hey... If it means you can get that tacky emailaddress...

This is probably now about 50% of the problem.

I was patient most of the day, and working in the IT field I understand that things take time, but my patience is wearing thin at this point. There is absolutely no excuse for this. I just spoke to a MobileMe chat representative, and he had no ETA for service restoration, but he did say he was equally annoyed. I've been trying to sign up all day, and I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting - now it's just ridiculous. Didn't Apple purchase a Tier IV datacenter all for themselves? Why is it having issues handling this rollout? I just don't understand...

Your patience is wearing thin??? What exactly is your problem here?? At first you sounded like an existing .Mac customer that needs the web hosting services up and running as some others on this forum. But towards the end of your post you mentioned that you are trying to sign up?? Oh then Apple's not hurting you by the delay, you have nothing at stake here, so what's your problem again??

I've had a .mac account for several years, and my .mac username is only 5 characters.

Still no MobileMe Software Update!

I know that the MobileMe update has been released through Software Update, but it doesn't show up in mine! Not even if I go to the .Mac System Preferences like it says. If anyone can help me, please do, because I am stuck.

I agree.....

Agreed, to a point.

This just spells really poor release management.

There will be serious pressures to go/no-go, especially with global launch of iPhone. But Mac-Freak or not; levels of expected perfection or not, if an organisation is going to transition from state A to state B then this should be managed, right?

And even more so as this is a paid service!

I'm half expecting Jobs et al to come out smiling, looking a little sorry for them selves, and saying sorry, we'll do better next time.

Not this time guys. It's a paid service.

Don't know about the rest of you, but this is not acceptable. And I've been experiencing this quite a bit with a lot of Apple items recently. (TimeCap faulty, then replacement not configurable "out of the box", and genius' who are really not very knowledgeable at all but treat you like a pleb).

Sorry to say this, but I've got a feeling that APPL are on for a big fall. Jobs is going to head off soon, and it will be an organisation that will resemble the 90's (when they got rid of him the last time) - sales driven!

And before you say "well use something else", I'm BootCamping with Vista. And must say it's actually not that bad. Starting to use it more and more. And I REALLY can't believe I'm saying that. Trust me.

That's my 10 cents, sorry for the rant. Will be off the my local Apple store to complain and seek compensation. And also an explanation as to why, when the entire system is down (including my web sites) the Apple support pages show the following: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/mobileme/

:mad::confused::(

What Apple is doing today is ridiculous. They should have tested the migration path and documented all necessary steps. I am an IT Pro and I know. It's my job to migrate infrastructures. If I told my customers that during an upgrade their systems won't be available, they would shoot me!!!
Please don't start defending Apple. Try to be objective here. Their problems today show incompetence...I am really surprised.
