well, this is confusing.

Two ipod touches,, both at $299 , but one with rear camera, and one without.

Maybe Apple should actually have said on their site "(fifth generation)" or something to tell the difference...

True,, take out the speakers, and it will get cheaper :)

However, it would probably be just an a bigger version shuffle + a display then...

Less expensive one is $229 (new one), not $299.

Isn't is awesome how Apple takes away features and calls it an update ?

Like CoverFlow in iTunes ( I actually used that for my entertainment center)

Whats next ? "Now with NO SPEAKERS !!!!" Yayyyyyyy:rolleyes:

That could be the reason it was so quiet because it is a more limited then the others and just cheaper.

An odd update was when the mini got a touch screen (big deal for such a small device) yet removed video and the camera.

The "new" 16GB iPod Touch will become the bastard child of refurbished parts. Think of it. How much does Apple lose when they throw away components? What is the best way to recycle these components -- and still make money?

Introducing the "new" iPod Touch~!

At first everyone thinks it's a nice new thing, but when they release the NEW iPod Touches and they have to service the older ones -- a lot of those components from the older ones will be recycled to create the 16GB iPod Touch -- goes hand-in-hand with Apple's new policy to do in-house repairs. No consumer will know, but their 16GB iPod Touch will probably have 32 and 64GB of capacity that has been "nerfed" through software to address just 16GB. The components and surplus of this year's models will go into next year's low-cost model.

Then get the 5th gen with camera and loop for a couple bucks more. Considering how they launched this so quietly I'd say this is for people who want some, not all, of the benefits of an advanced music player. This also could be another step towards spliting the iPod touch line into the "iPod watch"(iwatch)

Will the iWatch have a camera at all? Taking photos without a "viewfinder" sounds clumsy in the digital era.

Don't really see the point of them anymore myself, gotta have a smartphone, don't need both.

Maybe for kids?

What they should do is make the speakers better like on my HTC One, up the storage as well, then I could see the point at that price. As it stands if I wanted something for just music an old Android phone with a 64gb microSD sounds much more attractive...and cheaper

I'm a product designer and I am currently working on a mobile application for a hospital that will track patients and keep doctors and nurses up to date. Something like this is perfect for this. I see lots of other commercial application for this. But I think you are right, not many adults would need this for personal use.

I don't quite understand the pricing ...

If Apple charges us $100 for each bump UP in memory capacity ... then why do we only get a $70 "discount" when they cut the memory in half?

And on top if that they "de-content" it by stripping off the rear camera?

Doesn't exactly make sense.

It would have been a sweeter deal if they had come out with it at $199 WITH the camera.

And if they are going to strip out the camera, I would definitely expect the full $100 "discount" down to $199.

Of course the new Touch is a lot, lot better than the 4th gen it replaces.

At least there are some goodies that come with it, like EarPods and the Lightning Connector. Too bad Apple still doesn't include a charger - they still view the Touch as "tethered" to a computer, back from the days when you needed iTunes on a computer to update it (almost to run it). But in an era when a lot of us are cutting the cord from a traditional computer, viewing a computer as a handy (even necessary) source of recharging is really archaic.

Overall I'm glad they canned the 4th gen, it was REALLY long in the tooth, and I agree with the commenter who said iOS 6 really slowed down the 4th gen. That was my experience too ....

what a terrible idea

Having an iPod Touch now without a rear camera is pointless. This is an attempt to bring back iPod sales that they've been losing from iPad Mini Sales.

iPad Mini $329
iPod Touch $299

Yeah I'd spend the extra $30 bucks and get the Mini any day.

I would as well once it gets a far better display, the only issue I can think of it people that want something even more portable.

I think that the CNET folks hit the mark with this value observation:

"And in Apple's defense, you can still take all the self-portrait photos, videos, and Facetime chats you want with the iPod's front-facing camera. If you can live without the 5 megapixel camera and 1080p video recording found on the $299 32GB iPod Touch model, then why not save the money?

OK, even I have a hard time saying that with a straight face. With only $70 separating the drab, one-eyed 16GB iPod Touch from the colorful 32GB model, choosing the lesser of the two is not only cheap, but foolish. Doubling the storage capacity alone is worth the extra $70; the camera and the 1080p video recorder merely sweeten the deal."

I was just thinking, this Apple product was not leaked! Imagine the implication of this ...

So the back camera costs $71??

Also seems like that lanyard loop is gone .

BTW, I think a typo on the fully equipped version:

iSight is the face camera, not the back camera.

That was true for Macs prior to 2010/2011, but Apple rebranded the iSight camera as the high-quality backside camera for their devices. They use the FaceTime/FaceTime HD brand for their front facing cameras now.

The $299 regular iPod touch is IMHO a better value. This is just Apple trying to maintain profit margin at a lower price point - a bit like the iPad mini. Result: a product that has been hobbled.

Seems a bit like fragmenting the products...

It seems that Apple is following Samsung's lead in offering more products, finding that fragmentation is nothing more than a word Apple lovers used as a weapon to criticize Android.

I like the idea of Apple providing a few choices when it comes to iOS devices. Too bad they are obsessed with just one iPhone. I do believe a choice of two iPhones would increase ROI, as well as the gross.

Much better for me personally, if I am going to spend that much I would just go a bit more and get the memory and camera. Like I really do not understand buying a two year old smart phone on contact (really old when that runs out) to save a hundred dollars or so to just spend that much each month and a couple thousand over the course of the contract. The phone itself is one of the smaller matters.

I think Apple missed the mark. iPod touches are attracting the cooler, young at heart, consumers. These people like cool stuff too and that includes gadgets.
I see kids, students, gym people, etc using this type of gadget.

This would include using a rear camera for photos. I think it's another major fail for Apple. I have the touch 4th generation. Personally, I don't epuse it for anything other than music and iTunes but that's about it. But everyone else I know, and see around me in the malls, at gym and outdoors uses the camera a lot for their touches.

Sorry but even the bottom of the range should have a camera. That's like a major step backwards when trying to keep your products aligned. They'll probably sell less 16GB now and people will continue to support the 32GB upwards with a camera for the extra $80.

This product won't sell and Apple will come next year with a camera and add it as a WOW feature to their 16GB touch
