Quietest apple launch ever!

Like what the heck - really doesn't make any sense. WWDC is in 2 weeks!
They're probably going to show off a LOT of stuff if they're not even talking about little things like this.

Glad I still have my 4th generation iPod Touch, by the way. It's served me well for over two years! :D

What you want is Apple product with Samsung pricing.

Nope, thanks for playing.

Apple sells the touch for $229. If you consider that "samsung pricing" then Apple is already doing "samsung pricing". Which makes it "Apple pricing".

Samsung has nothing to do with it. I'm asking about a pricing comparison between two of Apple's own products. If you're too obsessed with other companies to make that comparison, I guess it's time for you to bow out of the conversation.

It's like the conversations about macs where people keep bleating "apple doesn't do cheap!" while totally ignoring the mini.

Don't really see the point of them anymore myself, gotta have a smartphone, don't need both.

Maybe for kids?

Because, if you have an Android phone, then you will need to get an iPod Touch. You wouldn't pay for two phones, if you were sensible. Why woudln't you just get an iPhone, then? Well, maybe because of a contract. Maybe you need an Android phone for some other reason. Regardless, if you can't get an iPhone, for whatever reason, the iPod Touch is there for you to use.

I don't really see anyone watching movies or listening to music on Android phones. Forget about all of your iTunes content and all of the apps. That's why I go the combo route. I have a Galaxy S for my web browsing and phone needs and an iPod Touch for movies, music, apps and games.

Kids! Kids!. Kids! I would love to see age breakdown for iPod touch users. Most are under 15 I'll bet. I have two iPod touch in my home for the kids who are too young for social networking or phone capabilities, so a camera for photo uploads is unnecessary. iPod touch is the killer handheld for kid use- movies, games, music, light internet, nothing on the market is even close.

Ok everybody talk about iphone, but this means that and ipod 6g is coming right? like every year...i have money save for buy a 32gb model this summer, but what is my best choice? i should save till fall, that come a new one?

didn't read any rumors about this.
no rear camera at this price is a deal breaker for me, they should have added the rear camera.

What they should do is make the speakers better like on my HTC One, up the storage as well, then I could see the point at that price. As it stands if I wanted something for just music an old Android phone with a 64gb microSD sounds much more attractive...and cheaper

This is too expensive for just kids.

I really don't see the need for this product if you have a smart phone, but they must be selling or Apple would keep putting them out.

I tend to agree. My wife's kids (ages 9-13) and their friends would all much rather have an iPod Touch than a gaming handheld or something. They all love them but I don't think they would like it if they didn't have their rear facing cameras.

Not really. It is priced about the same as a Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita which are both targeting kids. Apple also has a great system worked out so that an Apple ID doesn't have an associated Credit Card Number and purchasing through the iTMS can be done with gift cards. That makes it extremely kid friendly because they can just use their allowance to buy $15 gift card at the corner store and with that buy about 10 games as oppose to a 3DS or Vita where that buys you 1 game that is on discount.

An announcement for a 128GB capacity iPod Touch would have been received with 10x more enthusiasm. Would have even surprised a few iPod veterans around here.

A 16GB iPod Touch announcement? meh.

Awesome, finally!! This is exactly what I was hoping for, glad it happened =)

Gotta disagree with you there.

Movies and games are so much better on a galaxy s due to the screen size.

Movies on a 4.8" screen >movies on a 4" screen

I keep my touch for ios only apps and games, but if I can get the app for android I'll take it there because I can use it on a bigger screen.

I'm not a kid and I have one.

Some of us just want the best phone and the best media player, a high end Android and ipod touch solves that.

no rear camera and 16GB for $324 (€249 here in Austria) ... even though I love the black & silver combo ... that's like pre-ipod touch 4

Maybe 128gb in the fall as the update...

Anyone have the link to where the Kuo from KGI originally predicted this? Like the MacRumors article...?

But you would really forego it all together?

Think about the people who tend to own iPod Touch: high school students. They take a ton of pictures.

Then get the 5th gen with camera and loop for a couple bucks more. Considering how they launched this so quietly I'd say this is for people who want some, not all, of the benefits of an advanced music player. This also could be another step towards spliting the iPod touch line into the "iPod watch"(iwatch)

Did you even read the article...?

Throw on top of that all the Utility and Productivity Apps iOS has that will work just great on a iPod Touch. The 3DS and Vita have virtually 0 productivity options. The Vita doesn't even come bundled with a usable calendar or notepad app.

At 229 this is starting to get finger bending on Nintendo and Sony. What Apple needs is guide or commercial on how to use iTunes gift cards instead of credit cards. Within another iPod generation the only thing 'gaming' handhelds will have going for them are external memory options (which may go away for Sony) and physical buttons for controls. Which Apple could do if they just put in some drivers into the API.

My 3 and 4 year old both have iPod Touch's. They love them. They play games, watch movies, take pics. Works great for kids and for the price you get way more than a DS or Vita.
