So how much faster is the highest configurable GPU in this model compared to the previous 5k retina generation?

There's a decent website called notebook check that rates graphics cards, they liked it. It should be fine for gaming as long as you don't want native 5k res or all the bells and whistles turned on! In any event, gaming on a Mac (unless you set it up with Windows) can be hit or miss

$1799 model = AMD Radeon R9 M380 with 2GB video memory
$1999 model = AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory
What's the difference between the two, I wonder.

I was quite looking forward to the 21" Retina iMac, but right now feel a bit disappointed that the GPU might actually be and even feel slower than my first-gen 2012 rMBP.
Also, as has been commented here many times, Apple has become ever more greedy in the last few years; not having an SSD standard in a brand-new late 2015 iMac is simply a cynic play to get more $$$ out of our pockets, as is the redesigned 1TB Fusion drive.

I don't know what the hell Apple is thinking with the iMac when their laptops are pretty darn good.

The only people I can see buying iMacs are... What.. Estate Agents? School-run mums? Execs who don't think they need laptops? Who is their demographic? Who is buying these?

People who want a big screen, don't need portability and don't want to go looking for the family laptop in their kid's room?

Well, according to Apple's official site, that "2 minutes of charging for a day's use" is debatable at best. This is what they say on THIS page:

"A minute of charging delivers up to an hour of usage." (Scroll down to the section tiled "Change Is Good. Except For Batteries"*

So if 1 minute can only guarantee you "up to an hour" it's very likely that 2 minutes is not going to give you a whole days' usage. I guess they weren't selling enough of the Apple branded rechargeable batteries so they've effectively air-brushed them out. Yes, you can still find them if you dig, but they're hardly a top-line item anymore

* And while we're at it, why can't they actually write that section header properly?!? Put a damned comma in there instead of a full stop!
Ah, got that bit. (Still don’t believe it mind you). They don’t need to sell lots of Apple branded batteries as they obviously have plenty of Apple branded Kool Aid to replace it.

5k iMac is all Skylake.
4k is waiting for Iris Pro models of Skylake.. they have not been released yet. So next year. Maybe.

I'd be excited to see a new Skylake Macbook Pro soon (or sooner rather than later)... Will they also depend on Iris Pro?

I'm sure the mac will sense the battery going down soon enough before it is actually dead to warn you to re-charge. I have both the current wireless keyboard and trackpad and I get about a week's warning before my batteries are actually dead. ...

I have been using Panasonic Eneloop batteries in my accessories and have been pretty happy. I'm not going to rush out and buy the new ones, but I'd much rather be able to just plug in a lightning cable from time to time than have to find a coin and swap out batteries. Just hoping that Apple is including a lightning cable with each of these (and they are...I just checked).

There is NO REASON they couldn't do both. They'd probably have to back off a little on the speed charging, but I HATE built in li-ION batteries. I've had terrible luck with my iphones, replacing the battery at the 18 month mark consistently because I'm below 75% of the already anemic battery life. You can have a built in charger AND make the batteries user-replaceable. I think cordless mice are terrible anyway, and cordless keyboard have very little benefit. I guess this peripheral upgrade is not for me.

$300 more for a 27" 5K display, faster CPU and a discrete GPU? Seems like a no-brainer to skip the 21.5" and go for the base 27" 5K iMac.

That location of the lightning port. Apple, do we really have to keep the mouse like this to charge it?!

Lets be honest here... Apple kind of sucks lately. ... also, where it the damn Thunderbolt Display??? And why does it seem every time a model comes out, the customization gets smaller and smaller...

Wait for another "silent launch" next year when the Updated Skylake Mac Pro comes out, sure with ECC-DDR4 and USB-C 5K Display (with expensive USB-C - Display Port adapter available), ahh no more 4 Core Mac Pro (blame intel for this).

This makes me a bit sad. The M295X throttles in the iMac within a few seconds of use, I assume the same will happen with the new ones if it's the same.

And I've held off a whole year waiting for this after returning my last 5K iMac... :(
This time only if you take i7 6700K 4GHz verision. All i5 versions are 65W new desktop chips that will keep the system cooler. So, the best pair if you don't want to have heat issues are 3.3GHz i5 with M395X.

Yeash...

Retina model comes with a 5400 rpm HDD rather than a Fusion Drive or all SSD - it's unimaginable for this class of product.

I'm a little weirded out by this all-Broadwell line up, but as a friend reminded me, the available Skylake chips don't have Iris Pro and that's probably why we're getting Broadwell instead.

Price hikes everywhere.. ok, not so surprising, even if I'm not in love with that either.

The updated 5k iMacs make sense, updated GPUs = always good.

One last weird choice, the new BT keyboard is rechargeable (awesome) but uses a Lightening port - can't Apple make up its mind whether it wants to go with Lightening everywhere or USB-C everywhere yet?

People who want a big screen, don't need portability and don't want to go looking for the family laptop in their kid's room?

They must really want a Mac then, because to those people I'd say buy a PC.

I maintain that the ridiculous form-factor of this iMac is over the top at gimping its performance, considering it's a desktop computer.

WOW, this is more than greed, this is pride... imac 21 - old broadwell, intel gpu only (same intel **** for retina and nonretina), still spinner, like, REALLY apple? and killing non retina 27incher... wow:(

Families with kids buy desktop computers. It's MUCH better to watch what your kids are doing when you have a desktop computer set up in the living room where the rest of the family is.

Letting an 8-14 year old alone in their room with a laptop just begs for them to be looking at sites they shouldn't.

Just tried to purchase one of these new iMacs with 5K and an i7 4Ghz processor. Apple sales and tech support say the current processor for this lineup, is still Haswell.

Quoted (Gabriall):
PROCESSOR

Processor
Intel Core i5 (4690) or Core i7 (4790K) ("Haswell")
Processor Speed
3.5 GHz (Core i5) or 4.0 GHz (Core i7)
Architecture
64-bit
Number of Cores
4

Also non-replaceable, so I get to throw out these ridiculously expensive peripherals when the batteries die.
Did Apple say the batteries are non-replaceable? Every other Apple device with lithium-ion batteries has replaceable batteries. I'm sure the same is true of these.

LOL, it’s Intels fault?
IIRC, Timmy was suggesting that the new iPhones/iPads have desktop class processors. If this is true they only have themselves to blame……..

Those are the specs of the previous-generation 5K iMacs with Haswell processors. Whoever you chatted with is not aware of the new update ;)

Has anyone noticed that the 1TB Fusion Drive now only includes 24GB of SSD. This means that Apple is charging $200 for 24GB of flash!!! (it was bad enough when they were charging this for 128GB) This is a good demonstration of Tim Cook's bean counting mentality!
