No USB-C, no DDR4, no dedicated GPU, not standard fusion drives, no Skylake? These are 2014's iMacs... I usually never say this, but this time around, these are SEVERELY OVERPRICED.

Yeah because those 4k or 5k displays are really cheap...

When the rumors began to show up that there's 4k 21.5 iMac around the corner, I was afraid Apple will put that mediocre AMD graphics in it and won't even update the non-retina 21.5 iMacs, like they already did with 27 models.
Boy I've been underestimating Apple. Integrated graphics only (FOR 4K DISPLAY? SERIOUSLY COOK??), 24gb flash for 1TB fusion drive THAT'S NOT EVEN INCLUDED IN BASIC CONFIGURATION.
iMacs always were pretty good in terms of using internal space and providing pretty decent configuration for their cost. But this release is a freaking requiem. Swansong if you ask me. Go to hell, Apple. You simply ruined iMacs for so many people with your greed and stupidity.

Thats so silly ... why we can't have the best hardware available?

I mean yeah most people don't know and will buy this stuff anyway ... but it feels not right "to rip them off".

Another disappointing and greedy refresh. Still a 1" black bezel and 5400 RPM HD, Skylake for the rich only? Phil Schiller needs to go work for Tonka. He killed the Mac Mini and now he's killing the iMac. Nuff said!

Pretty sure Phil Schiller is just the marketing guy, and has no input on what actually goes inside the computers.

'In this economy' - what is 'this' economy - the one YOU live in, or the one the KARDASHIANS live in?

Hint: It's both.

$129 is nothing to me. I spend $100 here and there about 3-4 times a week on dumb stuff. $129 is a LOT to many people. But 'In this economy' means nothing. Some people make a lot, some don't. Apple is betting that there are a lot of people that are in the good part of the economy who will buy their high-end products.

And now Microsoft is betting on this as well...

Yeah right, not even you really believes that.
Unless you are a spoil brat who gets everything for free.
Just remember that doesn't last forever.

Not sure why the spoiled brat comment. Fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people don't want to play their old games on a new console. Heck, once they finish a game, they probably wouldn't even replay it. Not sure why it's that hard for you to see this.

Rechargeable AAs are still the better option. You can use them until they degrade and then replace them (versus the mouse itself). Also, because of where the connector is, you can't use the mouse while it's charging so if you're at an iMac, you'd better have a backup!

I do find that an extraordinary oversight by Apple.

A mouse that can't be used while recharging?! What were they thinking?

I wish my beloved Apple wasn't going to the dogs. Perhaps next year will be better. I guess Apple have finished their stuff for this year.

The iMac is an excellent product... I admire the design and the power it contains within such a nice body. It became especially interesting for me when it started having Retina display and then 5K.

I used to run my previous macbook pro with dual thunderbolt screens... and I wanted to switch to the 5K iMac, but I began working mobile too much and the investment in a desktop becomes less and less rewarding.

I held back on that... and recently got a 2015 macbook pro upgrade provided by the employer... I started to be even more mobile and can't even attach my mac to the displays for the past few months...

Maybe if I hit the jackpot... I'll buy a top class iMac for every room in my house.... lol. I like it a lot but yeah it's definitely a lot of money.

This Economy means the economical situation of the majority of people, not just a few.
Don't fool yourself. Things could change from one day to the next, and today's rich and happy guy could end up living under a bridge tomorrow. Others commit suicide to avoid changing their rich lifestyle.

I can't imagine the Kardashians using a Computer, when all they can do is send text messages, take photos and FaceTime.
Apple can't expect to base their computer sales forecast on people like them (only for iPhones).

And in case you wonder my financial status: I'm sitting on my Herman-Miller Aeron chair. (Get a hint?)

I'm not willing to just give away my money to buy undervalued products.

Dollar is going very strong, above most other currencies, unemployment has fallen quite significantly, real estate is increasing, not in a bubble again, but steadily.
Whoever is telling you we are not doing fine in the US is lying to you to get on their side.

An observation... I believe that most of the clamoring for dedicated GPU's in the iMac's are due to to folks wanting to be able to run Bootcamp and game via DirectX and Windows... Otherwise Parallel's & Fusion offer great alternatives for running other Windows apps. The choice is now non-retna with Intel GPU or retna with AMD GPU... Theses configurations offered for the new iMac's are the least favorable for this purpose as they have ever been... (I guess I will have summoned the "no gaming on mac's" police!)

Yeah right, that's why the Fed has been reconsidering whether to raise rates or not, something that was almost a certainty six months ago. If the economy was truly that healthy, rates wouldn't stay that low. And who says "the economy" is only about the US?

Why not ditch the Fusion Drive completely and get the new 5K iMac 27" with an SSD Drive. This way you no longer need to rely on hybrid technology with a mechanical hard drive that may break at any time.

Or... you may always upgrade it to SSD later on at OWC.

That would definitely put me over the amount I allocated for a comp. I'm torn between the two. 128gb vs 24gb but I gain other improvements. I'm curious if I would notice the reduction of 3x in the SSD portion.

Not true, it runs fine without a DGPU. Case in point my MBP 13 with no DGPU and I have no issues. Sure it'll be faster with DGPU, but it's not a deal breaker for most.

Intel GPUs are so bad, and they do not support OpenCL, impacting performance of some software severely. The "good enough" argument justifies almost anything, right down to paper and pencil, but this product has premium pricing and a high res screen. It's seems it's been gimped for no reason other than to upsell people.

Desktops ought to have better performance than laptops, because of greater flexibility, but Apple doesn't see it that way.

So, don't buy it. Buy a cheaper trackpad then.

I'll buy the Apple one because it's much better than the cheaper ones.

Old trackpad was AU$99. New one $199. Why the $100 increase?! It's nothing to do with it being good, in fact it's functions are identical to the current one, there's very little change. So what warrants a $100 price increase on a $99 product?

The mouse charges in 2 minutes?

In that case, I retract my negativity on the recharging. I couldn't see that anywhere on Apple's website.

According to Ars Technia:

The rechargeable battery is the biggest change here, and Apple promises that two minutes of charging a dead mouse will provide enough power for about nine hours of use.

I am astounded and retracted my statement as well.

Apple has an interesting comparison of the original iMac and the current iMac on their website.

http://www.apple.com/imac/then-and-now/

It is interesting just how much innovation has happened within essentially a fixed price all along the way, if not LOWER. Orders of magnitude.

Rocketman

It's somewhat disingenuous a comparison though.

They say that the processor is thousands of times faster, but in reality, there is not much difference in speed for most people. Word processing is much the same as it was back in 1998. It's really only those who work with video/graphics or play games that have seen significant improvement.

Re storage: they say that storage is 750 times greater, yet the max storage of 3TB hasn't changed for several years. If storage had doubled each year, we would now be seeing 7,864TB being offered for the high-end iMac. :) That's going on 60GB in 1998.

It's actually surprising how little computers have changed in the past twenty years. Really, the big improvement has been in phones and tablets.

Apple releases new products and most posts are complaints....as sure as the sun rising in the east. :D

I'm sure if the updates were considered worthy improvements, most of the comments would be complimentary. There'll always be a few negative nannies, but people are generally fair.

Perhaps you have grown weary of the reaction to Apple's stumbling since Jobs died. I understand that.

No market for a display. Makes much more sense to build it into a desktop.

No market for a display? You're not serious, are you? I have two external displays attached to my MacBook Pro. I have no use for an iMac. I need my computer to be portable; but when I'm at my desk, I want more screen real estate than a 15" MacBook Pro provides.
