Hmm...
That said, why did they bother releasing the previous $329 iPad with no Pencil support, a relatively short while ago, if they were going to go this direction anyway?
To protect the sales of the 9.7" iPad Pro (which one year ago also was still the current iPad Pro, it got replaced with the 10.5" iPad Pro only three months later).

RE: "iPad Like a computer. Unlike any computer."

(Some) Good news to Report, Apple listened to us who Ripped on them for their "What's a Computer" TV commercial (marketing) strategy !

But, $99 MORE for the Apple pencil makes it a Deal Breaker !

My Air2 is still better than this new one !

As an educator, these prices are a joke. Get the price down to under 200 with the pencil included and a Smart Keyboard, and maybe, maybe you can compete with chrome books. Schools take years to work up the cash to invest in technology, and google is giving away software and unlimited storage for free. The chrome books are cheaper, and they have a keyboard. Apple is too little too late.

Wow that was underwhelming to say the least. I'm not sure what impact this will have against Chromebooks and G Suite in education -none most likely. For the individual consumer it great to have an upgraded iPad that supports the pencil but Apple is really starting to look lost as an organisation.

Nope! iOS is a crippled, jailed, sandboxed and limited toy without USB ports and decent visible file system. Apple should make a true Mac tablet.

I said the screen in iPad 2018 is worse than iPad Air 2 because iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro use "Fully laminated display", which makes the device thinner and screen much near to the user. That is also why the device is lighter.

Also, the battery capacity is irrelevant as all iPads promised the same using time length. The pencil support is also irrelevant as all upgradable iPads support that. It is the same thing with ARKit.

The iPad Air 2 is only lighter because it has a much smaller battery.

iPad Air 2: 27.82 Whr
iPad (2017): 32.9 Whr
iPad (2018): 32.4 Whr

On battery life benchmarks, the iPad (2017) gets at least 1-2 hours more life compared to the Air 2.

Air 2 does not support ARKit because ARKit requires A9 or newer. Air 2 uses A8X.

Pencil requires iPad (2018) or iPad Pro. Air 2 does not support Pencil.

In fact, tying GPS to a device marketed towards children is probably more of a security risk than it is than a useful learning tool.

Sounds more like an apology because GPS can be turned on/off and can be used to find their way back when lost on a field trip. Next apology you'll tell us is kids don't go on field trips.

Aha! This is nice! Its not really an upgrade from my 9.7ipad Pro (can anyone say how much of a speed boost this would be? I have no speed issues with the iPp.. I would definitely take another 2GB of RAM though?), but it definitely means I won't be worrying about my screen real estate and worrying about app developers targeting the two larger sizes at my expense. :D I'm glad they're keeping the 9.7 size around.

A nice sturdy, relatively affordable iPad. I Love the Apple Pencil so much, and having all future iPads support the pencil is going to help show what they're capable of.

With all these comments about the new educational iPad, Apple will make the same margins or higher since they left out the expensive stuff like laminated display screen, "X" SoC and use cheap memory - LPDDR3 dated back to 2010.

The previous one had the A9, so why would they keep using the same one as last year?

Some unreliable rumors pointed at a $259 device.

The iPad (2017) and iPad (2018) both use LPDDR4.

Companies like Google and Amazon seem to have completely passed Apple by in tech.

Amazon passed Apple in tech?? LOL. Good thing Amazon discontinued their Fire Phone. They probably just wanted to give Apple a few years to catch up.

Because Some rumors were indicating a $260 price point originally for the 2018 iPad, which the A9 still would have sufficed in some respects. And its called being cost prohibitive for a budget entry-level iPad. It doesn’t necessarily need the A10 fusion (Considering it was also only used in the iPhone 7), as even the A9 would still be considerable coupled with two GB of RAM. Also to the fact, no one expected Apple to implement the A10 fusion from the iPhone into the iPad.

I doubt that schools would included cellular LTE option in their PO since it is $129 more per iPad and then the cost of the service too! Prohibitive cost wise!

The question is upgrade and all upgrade options support Pencil now. Also, if you want to upgrade, you definitely does not want to buy one physically identical to the previous version.

As I listed, iPad 2018 is physically identical as iPad Air (weight and thickness). For an iPad Air 2 user, it is definitely a backwards, not an upgrade.

Wait so this “new” ipad does have a smart connector?

What's really disturbing is it seems like Apple is literally in their own bubble.
It's complete common sense what you've said, and has been for years, and this is their "education effort"?

Do they perhaps just only care about Education for really rich kids?
Maybe that's it...

I just don't understand why they think this is compelling at all.

I dig it. I've been wanting an iPad just for reading pdfs, books, hanging on facebook in bed, annotating legal documents, etc. Something solely for consumption to not have to use my laptop but that I can write on...and I REALLY didn't want to pay $600 + $99 just for the ability to do that.

Since I'm a teacher I can pay $300 and pay $80 for the pencil. That's a lot easier to swallow - especially since the iPad Pro is likely to be refreshed with smaller bezels and Face ID this summer. It makes it a lot easier to pass my iPad down to one of the kids and upgrade.

1. If your kids disappear while on a field trip that you're leading, then you suck as a trip organizer.
2. GPS without LTE is useless if you're trying to get directions and you hadn't spent the time to download offline maps to every device.
3. Not all field trips go to a farm in the middle of nowhere.

That's the point. On non-Apple WIFI-only device, GPS is included at no additional cost.
