Redicolous and annoying. But well, I'm gonna buy a new iphone anyway. And stick with my Mac. Damn.

Yeah, guys. Because they will come into your home and remove mice and keyboards at gunpoint.

Oh, you mean it's an optional input mechanism that is used at appropriate times only? That must be too hard for some to conjure.

I work with many clients who have Windows 8 Touch Screen PC's and love swiping the screen when looking at images or doing certain presentations. It seems some "Apple" people write it off .. but if Apple released a touch screen iMac next month it would be the "latest break through in technology" ...

Yeah, nothing new. Looks like I'll wait until another 27" i7/3TB fusion/780M system shows up in the Canadian refurbished section.

Half the cores.

Half the clock.

Half the disk.

Crummy tablet RAM; unexpandable.

But a BIG 16% savings!

Any money Apple makes on this should be spent on Ouija Board technology to try and get in touch with Steve Jobs.

I love the people trying to find a use for this new imac. "You can use it as a print server, or to listen to music or check email". If that is all you need a computer for a $50 powermac G4 will do you fine. LOL.

 HAHAHA

You do know that you can buy the current $1,299 iMac at Best Buy for $1,048 today with an edu email address?

But I guess that just means that the $1,099 will be $899 soon at Best Buy.

That is is 1995. Most respectable stores have software that does that instantly. Just ask Amazon.

It's not like I'm the one who updates Apple's website. Clearly they have reasons for taking that long to update the store - I doubt Apple gets a kick out of making people wait (a poor customer experience) & potentially losing sales.

I've been waiting for Apple to announce their lower cost iMac to see what the specs would be. What does everyone think is the best iMac model for building an app? I'm a new developer and am just starting to learn how to code, so I'm certainly not making Infinity Blade here! But I also want to make sure I get a new Mac that has good specs to support app development.

My thought is that is should be a quad core chip and have at least 16gb of ram. I'm uncertain about the graphics card. I don't think the lower priced iMac has good enough specs for what I'm looking to do, but would love to hear what others think!

Thanks!

What are you thinking about as far as the type of apps you would like to develop?

If your not planning on writing games, even an entry-level will do fine (even a Mini). Definitely put 16 GB in it if you can (because there is really no reason not to), the CPU upgrades will be helpful depending on the app. The GPU will be helpful but not as necessary. I don't know how much you know about upgrades, but the Mini is easier to upgrade yourself than the 21" iMac (pop off the bottom and it's right there).

If you're planning on writing games, get one with a decent (non-intel, non-integrated) GPU and all of the above. CPU will be slightly more important here as well. I would recommend a better 21" or base 27" here over a Mini.

I wouldn't recommend a MacBook, even if it is fast enough.

Keep in mind that working under constraints can teach you a bit about optimisation (not sure how this all plays out now that we have Swift).

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions/comments.

I actually thought part of the :apple: Experience is seeing the Apple Store down ... I myself think they do it on purpose.

I'm guessing with Intel delaying their new chips to "before the holidays", we won't see anything interesting on the Mac front for a while.

The delay for the Mac mini may be that they are working on a $399 model with the inners from a toaster.

Okay, I have to ask this. What are people so desperate for in the Mac Mini? Aren't the newer processors focused on power savings instead of performance? Is there some magic processor out that gives 200% performance boost and Apple is not using it?

Every damn post about computer updates and we see the same thing: "Where are the Mac Minis?!?!"

I am not in the market for a Mac mini however I like to be up to date on what apple is selling and what consumers are wanting.

Reasons why people want an updated mini are:

Redesign
Much faster integrated graphics
Yes power savings, smaller footprint
Better value, (price for HDD, RAM, Cpu, etc)

This seems really strange. The CPU in this new cheaper imac is more expensive than the one in the more expensive model.

Intel retail/low-volume trade prices tell you almost nothing about what Apple may be paying for the processor in quantity.

its june 2014 and still no new products

Yeah, its almost as if there had been a major delay on the next-generation Intel processors that any significant new Mac designs will probably be based on.

NO Thunderbolt Display in 3 years (Yes I'm Waiting)

You can probably keep waiting until all current Mac models have the Thunderbolt 2 chip, required to support 4k or 'retina' displays.

For me... the $1,299 iMac guts shoved in a shoebox for $699 with no monitor would work. I would buy that. There would have to be enough profit for Apple.

Maybe they had to save room for another price drop when retina iMacs come down... at THAT point they could do $999 for standard and $1199 for retina.

Wishful thinking..
But I hope you are right. But I don't think retina iMac will start that low. And also won't be out Til 2015

Not the best value by any stretch...

There's only so much you can do with a 1.4GHz CPU but then again there are a lot of people that just use it to "surf the 'net and check email." I understand why Apple doesn't want to dip under $1000 but they could have offered a 1.8 or 2GHz for that kind of cash.

Stop succumbing to MHz myth. The i5 turbo boosts to 2.7GHz and in a desktop will stay there much longer. This is effectively a Mac Mini with a monitor.

There is no MHz myth when we're talking about the same CPU architecture and roughly the same generation of architecture.

Reasons why people want an updated mini are:

Redesign

What's wrong with the current design? Does the case of a desktop really matter that much to people? It's like the ever-thinning iMac. Nobody I know ever gets very excited about the thickness of a desktop. Maybe it matters much to people I don't know???

smaller footprint

Why is this important? Are people finding the footprint of the current mini just too onerous? Does someone's desktop really need that inch or two freed up?

I think both of these are popular in lists about "what people want" because we somewhat expect Apple to do it anyway. But I bet heavily that if lots of people were surveyed about a new mac mini, neither of these would rate very highly in their answers.

This seems like a lame model. And price point seems $100 to high.

Apple didn't even update the CPU or anything else in the rest of the line. Which I was hoping for a slight update.

Wish they sold a $999 model with 4GB Ram

Why? That is barely enough to load osx. 8 is minimum for a reason today and I highly recommend getting 16 gb ram
