Apple today announced the launch of a new service program that addresses an issue that can cause some iPhone 12 and 12 Pro devices to experience sound issues.

According to Apple, a "very small percentage" of iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models may experience sound problems because of a component that can fail on the receiver module. Affected devices were manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro owners who have a device that does not emit sound from the receiver when making or receiving phone calls may be eligible for free service. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max models are not affected and are not part of the service program.

Those who have an iPhone experiencing issues can make an appointment at an Apple retail location, or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple Support can also be contacted to arrange a mail-in repair.

iPhone 12 or 12 Pro models that have damage that impairs the ability to complete the repair, like a cracked screen, will need to have that issue fixed prior to receiving service. Apple says the repair program covers affected iPhone 12 or 12 Pro devices for two years after the first retail sale of the device.

Phones made during that time are ALL still under the 1 year warranty, so fixing the " no sound" issue free of charge is a wonderful concession on Apples part. I have random issues with my iPhone 12 all the time, that I know is software related. Ever since Apple let everyone "work from home" the software is borderline "Microsoft crap"! Pandemic exist, but if it ain't broke stop "fixing" it.

I haven't experience any on my iPhone. But what's the small percentage?

Give us the number, please. How many iPhones were affected?

Update: I just checked my battery and tell me how I went from 100% to 96% within two weeks. Now I’m worried if my iPhone has that no sound issue.

And, based on history, Apple will likely step up and handle this issue free of charge beyond the 1 year warranty with zero pushback. The truely wonderful concession.

Trying to assign a number to what a "small percentage" is, is frivolous. Makes no difference to me of it's 0.01, 0.1, 1, or 10 percent. Life goes on, Apple will step up.
 
I've been interested in this issue for a long time.
Often a when a video starts playing it will start at full volume for less than 1 second and then reduce to the actual set volume which is very low.
Conversely, I've missed dozens of phone calls when my phone doesn't ring or vibrate at all, even displaying the missed call dialog.
I've always assumed it was software.

Why just two years? The iPhone 12 will be supported longer than that, and component failure means there will be devices that failed much later. If you look at older service programs, Apple was more generous, setting the time period for 4 years or so.

What happened if the component fails after the 2 year mark? Do customers have to pay up for Apple’s QC fault?
 
I hope they issue a repair program for broken screen. This is my 4th iPhone in a row with broken screen defect, it's statistically impossible that I'm the problem

Why just two years?
I think because carriers still have 2 year contracts. Everyone that can buy a new phone every year will, and everyone that can't will have an upgrade within the duration of this program. The phone upgrades each cycle are so revolutionary that people really shouldn't be keeping phones for longer than that

This is BS. Majority of people in the world don’t have these kind of contracts. Most people keep their phones longer than 2 years. Besides, Apple support iPhones software for at least 5 years. Only having 2 years for a component failure is ridiculous. Either put an actual recall or have longer coverage. Like I said, the old Apple used to have 4 years for programs like this. But I guess Apple is no longer interested in giving good support for the premium price they’re charging.

Two years is an absurdly short time for a defect. Especially when half that time is covered by Applecare or no added coverage if you have Applecare+.

It should be four years like any prior program. Really three years added to any warranty end date.

This just seems like Apple thinks there'll be a really high failure rate by four years.
