I dont know, compatibility perhaps? The App Store is the only source for Lion, without it, customers who cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion anymore are stuck with an older system.
Did a quick rough calculation and it seems like I'm downloading at about 4.25MB/s... translating into about 16~17 minutes. WIN!

Update: Many users are reporting difficulties purchasing and downloading OS X Mountain Lion, undoubtedly due to heavy load on Apple's servers.

Looks like I'm gonna get a new SSD for my old macbook and do a fresh install.
I'm just going to wait a day or so before I download it! My Internet download speed is only 2mb/s anyway so with this heavy load on the servers it would take forever!
