Am I correct that they will exchange for the same buggy keyboard for free for four years but after that, they can charge whatever among they want?

After waiting for 2.5 years for them to release a descent MBP without that butterfly keyboard, even they are willing to exchange for the same buggy keyboard for 20-50 times in the next four years, I don't have time to play such continuously replacing the same buggy keyboard game.

So is this the same keyboard they're replacing it with, anyone know? Seems weird for them to start replacing keyboards if they haven't fixed the problem...

Does anybody know if they actually fixed the keyboard or will just put in another faulty one?

When the 2016 is repaired, it's repaired with the second generation Macbook Pro keyboard that comes in the 2017 model. It's listed in the following article under the "Takeaway" part. The second gen keyboard is still problematic compared to earlier non-butterfly models, but not as bad as the first gen that came in the 2016.

Smart move on Apples part. With new laptops pending, getting the existing problems fixed now with their laptops makes sense. It will make it easier form them to handle the 2018 batch of problems that will arise with a new release.

When did Apple blame their customers? How is providing free repair blaming their customers?
I’ve been to the Apple Store for mine and was told that it happens due to me owning a dog. Basically that it’s my fault and I can pay for a replacement or blow it out with a can of compressed air.

Even living away from a pet for a few months my keys still stop working.

This is one of the main reasons I bought Apple Care.

Same here. Got mine replaced twice already within my first year of warranty. The current one has been acting up but it seems to fine now. If there's an updated keyboard within those 4 years for the current design I'll sure be first in line to ask for a replacement.

No keyboard issues for me.. just coating peeling, GPU issues, yellow tinted display. Not just one Mac, 4 of them :).. fml

It’s brilliant that they finally started a free repair program for this. Many people thought they wouldn’t but it was starting to get out of hand. Although it shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place. The 2018 models don’t have this issue due to the mechanism used.

I wish this was true, but I have a customer who has a brand new 15" MBP that's already showing KB issues.

Doesn’t say only one time replacement. Since replacement will be same potential faulty keyboard Apple shouldn’t either.

Squeaky wheel gets the oil. I knew it would take some class action lawsuits to get them to do something - otherwise Apple would try to sweep it under the rug.

I remember one of the original petition posts (that was actually deleted) someone replied that nothing would come of the keyboard problems or the petition. Well I hope they're eating their words now.

If we all band together as consumers and tell Apple any way we can that this is BS - we can make a difference.

Unfortunately I feel bad for those who bought these laptops as they're going to be hard to sell once that 4 years has expired.

Anecdote is anecdotal. Maybe it was a nice way for the technician to say “chunk of donut” lol.

I’m sure there are design and/or manufacturing defects/shortcomings, and especially with less key travel and small clearances I can imagine several failure modes that are not the fault of the user. But I’m just as sure that those who don’t eat at their computer have a lower failure rate for these keyboards than those who do.

If you’ve ever worked in corporate IT, or even turned your own keyboard over and given it a whack, I have a hunch you know exactly what I’m talking about ;)

Pre-emotive notice: Please read carefully before any knee jerk response that I’m defending Apple or blaming the user.

.. and what about those poor souls who Apple made pay upwards of $600 for a top case replacement due to these faulty keyboards?

Why 4 years? Good amount of time but we should expect keyboards to last longer

The keyboard on my 2012 cMBP is going almost 8 years strong without a single problem. The lettering on certain keys have even worn off.
