Potential keyboard problem was the only thing stopping me from getting new MacBook Pro, tomorrow going finally to order one.

should I be concern?
Yes you should, bring it back, ask for full refund and buy another one in a week, they might have put new keyboards on them by then. or even better, wait for the next macbook to come out. Trust me these machines are very unreliable with the keyboard broken.. and their customer service isnt what it was like 5 years ago..

Other than reliability issues, I feel the keyboards are an improvement in every way, and USB-C charging trumps MagSafe.

I could not agree more. My 2017 MBP keyboard is far better than any other Apple keyboard I've used, resulting in faster typing speeds with better typing accuracy. And I'm super happy to be rid of 20+ year old USB-A ports.

Apple has always pushed forward, rather than staying stuck in the past. And four Thunderbolt 3 ports each capable of 40 Gb/sec transfer rates (and each usable for charging) are an excellent example of that.
 
I can imagine and no one is defending them for that. But this repair program will help you if the issues arise again. So why be negative about this news, specifically?

Congratulation guys, always great to hear that the critics was not pointless. Even though the lawsuit was probably the main reason Apple is launchning this program.

The "funny" thing is that affected is every single laptop with butterfly keys. It's really like admitting the design is poor.

Being critical about things is almost always good and Apple deserves critics. Without critics they won't have the motivation to create better products for us. When you are just blindly praising Apple for every single s*** they made, you will one day end up with overpriced paperweight.

Exactly, companies need to be held accountable or they will get away with the laziness that corporations bring about, especially the most valuable company in the world. Apple is not immune to brushing things off and taking the easy way out (pretending problem doesn't exist).

So is this the same keyboard they're replacing it with, anyone know? Seems weird for them to start replacing keyboards if they haven't fixed the problem...

All butterfly mechanism keyboards have problems. The design has been out since 2015.

Yes. I have the 2015 MacBook Pro which has the older "broken" keyboard mechanism (scissors), that was fixed from the 2015 MacBooks onwards, and included MacBooks Pro series from 2016.

My question was, why did they bother to change the design? Is there any advantage, like tactile response, costs such as royalty (the butterfly is Apple design) or production, thinness, etc.?
 
When will we hear from users who get the keyboard replaced under this new program? Perhaps they could comment on whether or not there is a change?
 
Awesome. I wish Friedrich would be as responsible and have a repair program for their air conditioners that are crapping out in two years, and LG which makes TVs with bad power supplies and keep blinking. Funny, Apple isn't perfect, but it sure is more responsible than other manufacturers, and still, the haters - hate!

AFAIK this program already exists? I had them service/repair my 2015's 12" keyboard about 3/4 times for free, even though my warranty period was over.

Edit: I'd be more content if they offered to swap the first-gen butterfly keyboard for a second-gen, or offer to swap current keyboards for a new third-gen mechanism. Service/repair just means that you'll have the same problem later on.
Second Gen keyboards also have the same issues.
 
How do these keyboards get out of Apple QA with these defects? I mean, this isn't an obscure hardware fault but the very fundamental device for taking Mac input so what is their excuse for such a horrendous problem? Alternatively, is this part of a Mac strategy to move to keyboard-less Macs by having us depend on Siri for all our Mac computing input needs?

mine is at the repair facility now. Took two trips to complain about it to get it in. Hope to have it back in a few days
 
Besides 1 extra year for free repairing, what are the benefits for those who bought Apple Care?
