If Apple knew about this since 2015 why did they continue using this keyboard design?

Huge investment in R&D, tooling and manufacturing, not to mention a huge ego/pr hit, to outright admit the "design company" created a horribly flawed design.

They tweaked and tweaked and it still sucks and still fails.

Apple made a big design mistake and they never admit those, sadly.

you think they wanted to deal with this?

So..no.. they didn't want to deal with this...
They were hoping it was small enough or they could deflect and deny enough to just have it slide by.

Kudos to all those who didn't let that happen.

The most valuable company in the world deserves to have their feet held to the fire when it's warranted.

Lord knows they have enough people doing the opposite and sucking on every tit that Apple can stick out and calling it the best milk they've ever tasted.

Mine is being repaired right now. Been in for the last week. God to know that this is being covered. What is was costing to repair was crazy however, this was in CAD.

Makes sense I guess. Redesigning the entire display (and possibly introducing new problems in the process) could be more expensive than fixing a small, predictable percentage of affected machines. The moving diffusor sheet and the display hinge popping are from the same category I guess.

I wish they would acknowledge and address the popping hinge too

I’ve never heard Apple blame the user for this.

I'm not aware that Apple blamed users for the keyboard error but the fact that Apple refused to cover out of warranty repairs free of charge indicates Apple did not see this issue as a design fault. Their customers had to pay to have keyboards replaced which effectively says Apple thought the problem was related to how the device was being used.

That and there are plenty of reports of otherwise "in the know" Apple store employees and techs denying any knowledge about this.

That's about as plausible as coming to this site and saying you can't see the color white anywhere.

Two theories about why they caved in now:
1) class-action lawsuit
2) they have finally got a replacement that works, which is also what is going to be in the next-gen machines. this probably looks and feels almost the same but has shown in their tests to be more resilient (ie they couldn't acknowledge it before they had a working substitute ready)

I bet everybody here thinks the answer is 1), and that's probably true. But I would love to believe 2) is correct.

In my experience, Apple is a bit hit and miss when it comes to the customer. Sometimes they do great things that other companies wouldn't but other times they're just defensive.

It’s brilliant that they finally started a free repair program for this. Many people thought they wouldn’t but it was starting to get out of hand. Although it shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place. The 2018 models don’t have this issue due to the mechanism used.
What 2018 models?

Free repair for four years after date of purchase is bare minimum?
Actually it depends and in some cases it’s maybe not even enough. As far as I know e.g. in England you have up to 6 years to dispute a product being faulty and obtain free of charge repair or replacement.

Meanwhile I just woke my MBP from sleep and it flickered and then went black until I moved the mouse, when I stopped it would flicker and go black again...where's my repair program for my 3rd MBP with video card issues? lol

Did they replace it with a generation 2 mechanism keyboard? Or do they just replace the generation 1 keyboard?

What the heck is going on, Apple?

What's going on is that today's laptops have become a lot more complex than the laptops of yesteryear.

I had my keyboard replaced a few months back under warranty. Now the spacebar is acting up again. So will have to make another visit

I've had pretty good luck with applying some pressure and jiggling the keys. I had quite a few keys get stuck on my 2016 the first year. In year 2, it's actually working better after getting broken in.

The failures are related to the keyboard, battery, and AR coating.

These are not complex parts.

If after 4 years they charge more to repair to cover for the loss to happen due to free repair, users are doomed.

I hope going forward when design problems arise it won’t take class action lawsuits and bad press for :apple: to do the right thing.

I am glad that owners finally got free repairs for the additional year(s).

We bash Dell for quality issues as minor as coil whine, but over the years - Apple has had some serious quality issues across their product lines, including iPhones...

GPUgate
Staingate
Antennagate
Bendgate
TouchDiseasegate
Now Keygate

Just to name a few...

Heck even for them to discontinue the Apple monitor and promote an LG ultrafine which had ridiculous issues. What about the HomePod being delayed, only to be a beta product as users had to wait months for some functionality? Even then, it’s limited to steaming!

What are we paying the premium again for?

I'm not surprised by this. The threat of a class action is usually what it takes...

Just got my class action check for the fiasco that was GTAT, the sapphire producer then went bunk. Lost a ton of money on that stock and came out of it with a whole $56.40 lol... class actions are only good for the lawyers ;)

We're paying for the vast majority of their products that don't have any issues.

how long it usually takes to replace entire keyboard? I have spare 2009 MBP, can I restore/timemachine my rMB 2015 to it?
