I had the same issue on my iPhone6, ended up buying the 7 and doing a factory reset on the 6. Gave it to my dad who started with it fresh and it's having the same issues. I've had it close on my anywhere between 25-40%, always had to plug it in to get it to boot up again. My dad took it to the apple store and they wanted $300+ to replace it :(

Hopefully they start covering the 6 because this has driven me nuts for months.
Your story mirrors mine...until the ending. Took it in 2 weeks ago, they backed it up to iCloud, wiped it it, reset firmware, restored from backup. In the diagnostic tests I could see 2 days recently that the battery drop occurred, (very cool day by day battery use graphics they have). He sent me off saying "see if that works". 4 times in the next 5 days it did it again, I logged each time that it happened. Went to a second genius bar appt. This guy was mad that the other tech had me reinstall everything from the backup...started blaming the software environment. Suggested that I either erase all unnecessary apps, or wipe it and set upon as a new iPhone. started hinted that I may have to buy a new phone. Fortunately I waited, this story broke, and today a tech in chat took my serial # and confirmed its qualification to be repaired at no cost. I have a repair appt Wednesday. Kinda confirms their manta...stick to the talking points. Well, that works great till you get the guy with $14,000 in Apple products in his home.

So my wife was having a similar issue with an iPhone 6s I bought for her in Nov 2015. It would shut off at 20 percent battery all the time. We have AppleCare+ so we figured we would take it in one of these days to get it resolved. Last night I saw the article: https://www.apple.com/jp/support/iphone6s-unexpectedshutdown/ and let her know so we can resolve first thing today.

Early this morning she called customer support and let them know about the issue and the article. The tech was unaware of the article and ran diagnostics on the device which came back fine. My wife provided details to him about the article and he went ahead and scheduled an appointment at a local Apple store.

We go to the Apple Store at the designated time and the local technician is clueless. They did not read the notes left by the phone technician, had no clue about this new battery replacement article, and wanted to run diagnostics again. After we got them up to speed, they replaced the battery no questions asked.

Long story short, provide the article and everything should move forward.

FWIW, went to the Apple store tonight (montreal, canada). Brought my iPhone 6s, serial is a QF, was told that it wasn't eligible and that in my case, the next update would fix it. Wtf....

That's weird?
I recall seeing at least 2 other posters with "QF" serials having no issues making logic board/battery exchange?

Is there somewhere I can look these serial numbers up? Mom has a 6s still and I'd rather nip this in the bud. She hasn't mentioned any issues yet, but it's her main form of communication and internet...

Apple's warranty is worldwide where there's an Apple Store/authorized service center.

Are you sure authorized service center will replace your Apple device even if you did not purchase it from them?
Lets not forget, Apple recently are walking the "unrepairable-do-not-open device" road, so there is even less and less reason for an "authorized service center" to exist.

is this only related to 'phone shuts off at 30% battery'? Because about 2-3 weeks ago my 6s+ started doing something slightly different but still battery related - it'll get to about 30% and then hit freefall, I can literally watch it going down through 20/10/5% all the way to 1% and then it'll just sit there for ages before eventually shutting off.

So the battery gauge is just completely messed up

I believe this is only related to the phone shutting off completely at a high percentage. The issue you are outlining sounds like the actual battery capacity and the reported capacity are off a bit. When is the last time you rebooted your phone? I would recommend 2 full drain/fill cycles where you charge your phone to 100% and then leave it on for an extra 30 mins. Unplug it and use it until it hits zero (DO NOT CHARGE IT) and shuts off. Do the full charge again to 100%. Reboot your phone and make sure it still says 100% (if not plugger back in till it gets there), drain to zero and charge. See if that fixes your problem.

My wife's does the same thing.

I had this issue on my iPhone 6S before it was swapped out by Apple. The store told me it was fine the first go around, and the second go around they were insistent it was a software corruption issue (despite already having reinstalled iOS from scratch after the first visit), though he eventually relented and gave me a replacement phone, though cautioned that he didn't think it would solve my issue. Set up the new phone as new, and... of course it resolved the issue.

Did they do a full swap for you? Or replace the battery

Got my wife's 6s done last night. They eventually replaced the phone because the tech broke a tab trying to replace the battery.

This is nuts. I have the exact same issue with my iPhone 6 too and the problem started around 3 months ago as well. It's so frustrating especially because there are no Apple stores around where I live.

Not sure if it's any consolation, but I have several Apple Stores near me. Been in multiple times for this issue. No fix. They say that I have to wait until my battery is performing under 80% before I'm eligible to have the battery replaced for $100. Ha. Ummm...

My serial number is in that list (QG) but is a 6S+ so will apple say I'm not affected?

Thanks is this confirmed?
I had my battery replaced last night and they did not wipe my phone. My serial number was in the QF range and they were able to confirm its eligibility over chat (or at least, the rep said she did).

good to know

Replaced battery. Took an hour and a half.

We erased everything first because they wanted her passcode to document in the system so they can get in. No way in hell we giving that out and now I know how the frappening happened. They do the same for your Macs as well. Crazy no one is up in arms about this.

yea I know
that's why you gotta wipe it clean before you take it in.

My nearby Apple Store (New York SoHo) doesn't have replacement batteries in stock, so they diagnosed my iPhone 6S and confirmed my unit's eligibility for repair, then placed the order for the part. I will have to go back next week when the part is in and drop off my phone for a couple of hours.

Just heard about this, finally!. My 6S used to die between 5-20% and recently has got worse and started shutting down around 35-50%. It's drove me crazy so glad Apple are going to do something about it.

I've never had experience of getting any repairs or tech help at an Apple store. What's the process? Can I just walk in with my 6S and get them to fix it or do I need to have any paperwork/the box or something? How long will it take them to do this fix?

Scroll up and read my article above to get an idea of the process. Walking in with no appointment is a bad idea as Apple kinda discourages it.
