The processor used in the razer one also uses 27% more power and requires more cooling as well...also, it costs $2400 and has about half the battery life of the 13" retina.

So yeah, Apple isn't being greedy when it doesn't include a quad core. There are a multitude of reasons to keep a duel core in the 13" model.

the macbook line up its ok for 2014 BUT they need to upgrade the MAC MINI...this is a MUST now in October

Why would they release a redesign for a design that is only 2 years old and without a Media Event Keynote announcement?

The current MBP design is now 6 years old having been first introduced in Oct 2008. Removing the optical drive, moving to SSD and adding a retina display are internal changes that have not materially changed the overall design. Even the colour has remained the same throughout. It's time for a change IMO.

You think about aluminium chassis because he got thinner and lighter and more compact over these 6 years

280 days since the last update and that is what we get.

Same thing happened with the 2012 Mac Pro 'refresh' that was merely a minor spec bump. Then BAM, we get a fully redesigned system the following year once Intel's Ivy Bridge XEON's were available.

For Apple, it makes more sense to keep that 850M tucked away and ready for the launch of the Broadwell CPU's and redesigned chassis next year. Sure I bet that they wanted to release them this year but what else could they do? Thing is if they DID drop the 850M into this refresh, it's likely that there would be no new GPU to put into the Broadwell model early next year.

Nonetheless, Apple still considers it a 3rd generation redesign.

is it 2015 yet?

funny my friend just bought a new mac book this weekend.. opps

You're confusing two generation designs with each other. The Unibody Versions (2nd Gen) were released in 2008, but they have since been discontinued in favor of the Retina Display Versions (3rd Gen) originally released in 2012 which actually have a complete redesign over the Unibody design. The only unibody version that remains is the low end Non-Retina 2012 model which is on it's last legs and also expected to be discontinued in the near future.

The CPUs exist, the limitation though is the 13" design. You cannot blame intel for cooling apple designed for the 13"

What planet are you on? I'm not blaming anyone for anything.

The physics say you can't just drop a quad core into the current 13" chassis as the cooling system won't cope. That's all my post says.

well, thats partly true. They could give users the geforce 800 serie though, at least as a BTO.
For me, if Apple released a new iMac with the latest Haswell and the 800 serie I would actually upgrade. Even if it would be a sad update.

Anyway, yet another silent boring day in the apple universe. (and yes, intel's much to blame for this)

Intel is a bit of a let down but making chips is very hard. Better Intel that someone in china stealing American tech.

First, the Razer Blade is using a 37W TDP CPU. The 13" rMBP uses a 28W. The Razer is also bigger in size (since it uses a 14" screen), and is almost the same physical size as the 15" rMBP, so it has other thermal conditions. Also it has two huge "air turbines" on the bottom of the machine. Even with those, it is a problem that Razer Blades die due to heat problems.

So find a 28W TDP quad core from Intel that Apple would be able to put in. Comparing to computers that are larger in size with huge air ports, and still gets too hot are like comparable apples to bananas.

still seeing Aperture as an add on for £56 in the UK. That'll sting when its discontinued soon (for those that aren't aware).

Why isn't it free? (only has so many months life and support left) Could have been a good draw to sell more macs.

What redesign? The 2012 version looks identical to the previous version just a bit thinner. Not a new design in my view.

You need some sleep. They were redesigned 2 years ago.

About the updates...

This is why Apple needs their own solution for their Macs. Say what you want, but Intel will focus less and less and less on such CPUs and does aren't worthy that much anymore.

Apple can't wait. The potential for their own SoC is huge.

I don't understand why Apple is still keeping this old non-Retina MacBook Pro 13" from 2012 in its lineup? It's way too expensive for the outdated hardware it offers.
Normally, Apple is known for being very radical in getting rid of old products and services. The future clearly is the Retina MacBook Pro line, so why still offering the old thing that's two years old already? Even a MacBook Air would be pricier for the same display size. The only argument for the old MacBook Pro would be the SuperDrive and the bigger internal storage... but who still needs an optical drive? And HDDs totally suck nowadays. I would never go back from SSD from HDD.

Well there is a little more to design than just making something thinner and color. Apple said specifically during their WWDC 2012 Keynote that the Retina Display Versions are officially class as 3rd Generation MacBook Pro's. There's also a little information here on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

Blame intel for year old nvidia GPUs? Yeah, no.

I predict another refresh in 6 months for Broadwell.

Because the CPUs didn't change much they it didn't make sense to create a new motherboard for this crap intel update. Thus no new motherboard = no new design for the 850m

It's still stems from intel's blunder. ;)

It seems like people buying the mid and high end 13" are getting screwed the most.
