You can't blame Intel for everything. Apple could have updated the design like they did with the Mac Pro to make it a worthwhile update but they chose not to.

update "the design" to what? Apple doesn't do change for change's sake. the new MP chassis design changed because the entire guts changed. that isn't the case with a laptop like this.

here are some users quite familiar with those cpu specs thermal wise so my following question is directed to them:

is it reasonable to assume that apple is able to put discrete graphics into a 13" mbpr? has there ever been one in a 13" apple notebook computer?

No and No, there hasn't.

The last 13" or under Apple laptop with discrete graphics was the 12" PowerBook G4, now a good 10 years old. The PowerPC laptops didn't have integrated graphics options so it's a bit of a red herring.

I'd just like to see a radical new design (and yes new colour) in the same way the Mac Pro just got a radical redesign and colour. I held out for the new Mac Pro and I really like it. I've been holding out in the hope they'll do the same with the MBP so I can upgrade. Making it thinner, lighter, retina, whatever does not constitute a new design to me whatever Apple says. Yes maybe it would make more sense to do it when they move to Broadwell processors.

So MacBook air is the same design as MacBook pro, according to you? It's just thinner, lighter, whatever?

lucky guys from normal countries.. here in Russia MBPs became more expensive after today's update.. 100-250$ depending on model. such a dissapointment.

What redesign? The 2012 version looks identical to the previous version just a bit thinner. Not a new design in my view.

if it's thinner then it's a new design. objects don't just resize themselves, dur.

as if it even matters. a new design doesn't make my devices inherently better in any way.

Still $200 to upgrade from 128 to 256 GB SSD. Feels a bit over the top to charge 200 bucks for 128 GB extra - for the same amount of money you can today buy a 512 GB SSD!

Bought mine for 170 ;)

Glad I still have a macbook pro that I can actually upgrade

Why are the majority of people on here blaming Apple for the lack of updates? It's Intel's fault, it's really as simple as that.

Just be grateful that Apple are updating them and stop being grumpy.

Really?

New Mac Pro vs. this MacBook Pro update = oranges and tires.

The worthwhile update to the Mac Pro was SO much more than the form-factor. Why would Apple offer a major MacBook Pro design update for a trivial component upgrade? The Mac Pro was given a significant overhaul for it's radical redesign.

If Apple is going to do a redesign, it will be with the Broadwell chip and probably a GPU upgrade - and hopefully. HOPEFULLY the ability to upgrade the memory to 32GB.

I'm happy with this. I needed a MBP for uni this September and a minor speed bump + £100 off every model I would consider purchasing is excellent.

Now all I need to do is decide between 13" high-end or 15" low-end.

Losing the portability and sacrificing half the SSD space against more real estate + Iris Pro + extra 8GB of RAM is a tricky balance!

Yea same here! I was holding out till the very latest for uni this sept! Glad I waited for a $100 off and CPU bump. I'm getting a configured maxed out 13"
My current Mbp 15" from 2011. The extra real estate is a luxury but I ain't gonna lug this piece of aluminium around :) cheers

And the whining for this and that continues.... Stay tune tomorrow for....?

A million up votes and stars for that comment.

The entitlement behavior of the few who always want the latest, are never satisfied with what is being offered is nauseating.

If it is so easy to pull out the next generation of faster chips and bring them to production, develop your own.

If people would wait for every product to be perfect (as in their personal liking)
in the tech area, wed never buy anything.

Errr, no. The design is still relatively new, nowhere near due for an overhaul. They can, however, be blamed for not reintroducing the 17" and not including a GTX850m.

I agree that 16 is bare minimum for running several VM's while still keeping the Mac apps available. You seem to do similar work for your clients as I do for mine and I really wanted to get a rMBP with at least 32GB of RAM.

I have been eyeing the W540 from Lenovo for a while and their spec's are good for this type of work but I really don't want to have to carry two laptops everywhere. Apple, give me 32GB for the Pro.

I have a gut feeling that this dependency upon Intel for CPU's will only hasten Apple's transition to their own chip foundry. I don't see Apple relying on a supplier who cannot meet their deadlines or timelines for much longer. I'd hate to see the first iteration, but maybe an A10 CPU in a rMBP may not be so difficult to imagine. I really don't care as long as I can run all of my apps. I cannot afford any downtime in supporting my clients.

Just don't let your clients know you spell plural words with an apostrophe.

Apostrophes are for possessives or contractions.

It will get interesting when the 13'' gets a quad-core CPU, together with a lower-end, but still fast and power efficient Maxwell GPU.

Guess it's possible with Broadwell/SkyLake, if Apple wants, and are not stuck in their product differentiation schemes.

Until then, no thanks.

I'd wait, honestly.
In addition to all of that, next year's update will probably be big enough to feature in a keynote, which usually means updates to the I/O, SSD, price, RAM etc. Apple loves to look good on stage. In any case, that's an all-round upgrade.
And hopefully add a high end laptop to support professionals that require a portable 17" retina.

Exactly. Apple isn't going to do a redesign for a minor spec bump like this. This is basically a back to school refresh that Apple hopes will tide people over until they can release new machines with Broadwell.

Why blame Intel? Are you blaming Apple for not yet having updated the Mac Mini, the TB Display, or last year Apple taking so long to update the Mac Pro? Even better where is the iWatch? Probably not because you would probably justify it as Apple taking the time to get it right. Why not give Intel the same benefit.

people say "blame intel" in response to the buffoons who say to blame apple for new major upgrades to it, despite the fact that Intel is the component supplier.

I'm definitely NOT buying these, as I'll be waiting for Broadwell... but I like what they have done with the line here, standardizing on 16GB, etc. I would have liked to see an upgraded chip above the 750M, but I suppose that will have to wait for the next update, which I'm onboard for.

I'm fairly certain he's referring to this abrupt refresh being because the Broadwell release being too late for a major refresh in 2014, and that's all on Intel. As for not updating the discrete GPU, why would they, knowing that it would be one less improvement to drive sales of the 2015 rMBP? Apple realizes that their yearly refresh has somewhat painted them into a corner. It's become expected. The processor upgrade is meant to maintain the image that they aren't just standing still and to make it a bit more attractive to buyers that, for whatever reason, cannot hold off a purchase until the Broadwell refresh drops.

A fusion drive is both an SSD and a spinning HD.
Basic stuff that should be in the mbp's.
SSD for OS and apps and spinning HD for data.
Until everyone can afford the 1TB+ SSD's ofc.

Blame Apple for taking out the superdrive and making it thinner instead of sticking in an SSD+HD combo (i.e. Fusion Drive)

If all you do is surf the web and check your emails then ya, sure, a single small SSD will be fine for you.
I make music and video.
I already have to keep offloading my music, video and photo's onto an external drive every few months with my current 256GB SSD + 1.5TB HD late 2011 mbp.

...and don't start going on about the "average consumer". This is meant to be a Pro laptop.

I don't want a spinning drive or a superdrive in my computers. It's 2014!

If storage is an issue then get a NAS. No one needs to keep their entire photo/video/movie/music libraries with them at all times.
