Haha, well look at that. Searching in Swedish actually does work! I've never even thought of trying that. Nice!Doubt it's the case, but what happens if you try it in Swedish?

Better options out there, even a physical backup is faster and more secure compared to “trusting” Google.A nice option to have for those that want to replicate a copy.
They already do. Sign in at https://privacy.apple.com and click "Request a copy of your data".Great, now they want my google user and password.
Why not just give me the option to download everything?
I’m not usually one to beat the long-dead Google privacy horse, but you’ve got to admit that it seems pretty creepy in your particular example. A system that’s smart enough to peer through videos and identify 2D renditions of objects on shirts is pretty spooky. I wasn’t aware Google had advanced their image recognition so much. It could paint a remarkably accurate portrait of the user.I know what people will say about privacy, etc. But I like Google, and the service is amazing. Too bad the unlimited free storage is going away.
One thing I REALLY like about Google.... is their search features. If I know what's in a photo, I can usually describe it to Google Photos and it will find it. iCloud - I can kind of do the same as long as I know the date / location.Better options out there, even a physical backup is faster and more secure compared to “trusting” Google.

Who says Apple gets your Google id and password? Don’t you just authenticate with Google and Apple gets a token that you have successfully authenticated?
Yes, very strange. I'd love to know the real reason they decided to do this.Strange. Did some money get exchanged somewhere? Why would Apple allow you to transfer to a competitor like this? Surely I'd just make people download their data and transfer it manually to dissuade them from leaving me.
They were one of the firsts that really nailed the facial recognition part. It was spooky good. Now? You can search for things like: Hard drive, bird, yellow glass, or something really small in the photo and it will find it. It's really good.I’m not usually one to beat the long-dead Google privacy horse, but you’ve got to admit that it seems pretty creepy in your particular example. And installing Google Photos and syncing your iDevice won't accomplish this exact thing?
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I understand that this is an issue of no one else building a client application that can beautifully display the files, and not an issue of Apple purposely making it harder to leave. For the record, you have access to the original data regardless.
If you "Export unmodified original" of a live photo, you get two files: The HEIC image itself, and a MOV file that is the "live" video part.
So, you can select all your live photos and mass export them to get the data. Whether another app or service can repackage it up nicely like Apple Photos does, though... That's another question.
Really? I've had my photos in the Cloud for long time now. Started out with Flickr, then Dropbox, then Google Photos, and now iCloud Photos for years now. I couldn't imagine NOT having it in the cloud. Taking a screenshot/photo on any of my devices then POOF having it instantly available on every device ... I'm spoiled. Love iCloud Photos. I've got about 116GB of photos.interesting offering, wonder what's been going on behind the scenes?
I do not store ANY photos in the cloud, I have a lot of them (75k+) and I don't trust either of the options ...
It's probably something that they can demonstrate in possible future antitrust hearings, that they don't hold your content hostage to their platform - they provide transition tools.Strange. Did some money get exchanged somewhere? Why would Apple allow you to transfer to a competitor like this? Huh?Now, if this was reversed, all hell would break loose
.. "No question, google gets our credentials etc..." ...
but Apple? Tokens only.
APNG probably would be the right format. (A = animated)live photos have been around for what? 7 years now? And there's still no decent way to back them up or any decent standard for the format. Moving them outside of an Apple photo library is still a disaster.
This seems like a win for privacy.
iphone dies, they buy an android phone instead. Why would someone want to move their photos from iCloud to Google?????
They like their info being sold? They want Google to downgrade the photo quality?
How would it? Be specific. And installing Google Photos and syncing your iDevice won't accomplish this exact thing?
To have this AI/ML built into Photos.app or even Finder that is on device would be optimal. iCloud needs a lot of work. One thing I REALLY like about Google.... is their search features. If I know what's in a photo, I can usually describe it to Google Photos and it will find it. iCloud - I can kind of do the same as long as I know the date / location.
But agreed, I don't trust Google and I wouldn't recommend using it.
I'm in the middle of doing this now. How did you handle metadata?Interesting... I am waiting for Apple to give us the feature of sharing photos with spouses. Google Photos has this feature where I can give my spouse full access to my photo stream (and me hers). Would love to have this on iCloud as my wife and I use iCloud primary now.
I see some say why isn't the reverse available? Google has a takeout feature... that's how I got my 120+GB of photos out of Google and in iCloud. ?
not saying you can't, I simply prefer to have direct control. My photos are in LR Classic, I can literally go through thousands of them in a matter of seconds ... But, we all have different needs and best of all, we have choicesReally? I've had my photos in the Cloud for long time now. To say there was no loss of data would be an understatement. None of my albums transferred and the way Google Photos does editing, I had like 3-4 copies of MOST of my photos. Took me a year to remove all those copies and choose which ones I wanted to keep. Also, I did this more than 2+ years ago ... so, it may be very different than how it is now. <shrug>I'm in the middle of doing this now. How did you handle metadata?
