It's a twelve year cycle. But the Chinese zodiac is also paired with their five elemental symbols: metal, wood, water, fire, earth. It's the year of SOMETHING every single year. This is a ridiculous argument.
Unlike the Western zodiac where your symbol comes for a month annually, your symbol doesn't come for twelve years in the Chinese zodiac so it is more special.
With the elemental symbol pairing, it's really a sixty-year cycle for your specific combination to come up. Let's say you were born as a Metal Dragon. When you are 12, it will be the Wood Dragon. 24 = Water Dragon, 36 = Fire Dragon, 48 = Earth Dragon. It will be your sixty's year when it is again the Metal Dragon.
It's a bigger deal for those people (mostly Asians) who follow this astrological calendar.
Most Westerners don't get it.
