I've never seen a "refurbished" iPod. Many have mentioned that they will replace the front casing, back casing, and battery. Will they also replace the clickwheel and the related components that are under the clickwheel ?

After 6 years, a sticky/less responsive clickwheel is really my only complaint at this point with the device. That's not a knock against the product - it simply has just worn out from hundreds of hours of use. If they don't make the clickwheel "as new" with the refurbish then this will be a waste of time.

I agree. A 6 year old iPod nano wouldn't be good for much longer if the click wheel was not refurbed too.

My iPod is in perfect shape. When I handed over my iPod at Apple Service, they did some checking and wrote only "User scratches" on the form, before sending it through for refurbishing. I think they assess which parts to change, for each unit.

No Box Yet

I got the email on November 13th saying I should "get a box in 2 days..." Still no box on Saturday the 19th so I called them and was told they ran out of boxes (unexpected demand, etc.). He thought they would be sending out more starting Monday the 21st and said we should return the iPad within 10 days after we get the box.

I guess I was one of the lucky few. I got my box on the 15th, shipped it back on the 16th, and it arrived in Ontario on the 17th. Now I just waiting for my new one to be sent back to me.

Either new model or old, it will be new and in decent shape. My old iPod wasn't holding much of a charge and having issues being turned off. I hope the new one will fix all of those problems.

I'm in the same position. The nano actually sits permanently on the BOSE speaker so if I am honest, the original shape is better for navigating around playlists whilst docked. So happy to get it back rejuvinated with the clock restarted on 5-6 years life (hopefully)!

Mine arrived Friday, pleased as punch...

corblimeylimey, so the ipod nano that they sent you back looked completely brand new? Or was it the same nano you sent back with just new front and back plates? Can you tell if this is a fixed up nano or a brand new looking one that may have as well come from a brand new box off a shelf in 2006?

So what exactly does "refurbished" mean?
An iPod which has been used by someone else, but with the worn parts replaced, or a brand new iPod which has been assembled by Apple service engineers out of spare parts?

If it's a used iPod we're getting back I'd rather open mine up and replace the battery myself as I haven't used it much and it's got very little (if any) scratches or wear.
I assume it won't be that costly or hard to do.

It looks brand new to me, not from 2006 though, going by the serial number it was made in Mar 2010.

My packaging arrived today.

Didn't get boxes just got jiffy envelopes and plastic return addressed bags.

Anyone in the UK get the same or did they get sturdier stuff?

The jiffy envelope is what is common to both of us. It's really what will 'protect' the iPod during transit. I did get a very basic box in which the jiffy fitted snugly. They must have ran out of these but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Ah well, my 3 went off today anyway!

I filed my claim on Nov 14 and no box yet  I got the email and I'm eligible for a replacement or repair.

just to chime in, got the email confirmation Nov 14 and just got off the phone with them due to not having received a box yet either. They are currently out of boxes, but it should get here within a week.

I seriously wonder what is up!
I registered my request for a replacement last Saturday, received an e-mail the same day stating that I within two (2) working days should receive instructions and the box for returning the iPod. One week later I am still waiting for the instructions and box...

Not too promising!
Finally, the packaging arrived!
A massive 19 days after I requested for a replacement, and received an e-mail stating I would receive the instructions and packaging needed to return it within 2 days.

Even worse, the packaging is incomplete!
The instructions state that the shipment contain a transparent sleeve to be used to mount the Proforma Invoice on the outside of the UPS envelope when returned to Apple. But I am 100% sure there are no such sleeve in the shipment.
Guess I will need to call Apple tomorrow...

Is Apple unable to meet demand?

The instructions couldn't have been easier. I returned mine last week before Thanksgiving and noticed two similar boxes on the shelf at FedEx. I was hoping for this. I hope the demand is so high that they start sending upgrades instead of refurbished models to keep people from waiting. How ever it goes, I will be happy with a newer iPod that won't explode. I haven't received a reply as to when my replacement is being shipped to me.

I don't think they will, they've covered themselves with 6 weeks which should be plenty of time to get them in, refurbed and back out again.

I don't think they'd open themselves up to the hassles, legal and otherwise, of giving some newer models and some 1st gen.

the seven days stated in the last call until I'd get a box are up. still no box. scheduled next support call for tomorrow. this is getting annoying.

I called Apple they said they were waiting for boxes and I could take to UPS with repair ID and they will ship.
Did that, they were recieved "Replacement Pending".
I still got the (6) boxes 2 days later.
She did talk to her manager and said that no replacements have been shipped yet?? and not sure what they will be replaced with.......??
Said anyone stating they have recieved a replacement is false.

also said I may not see replacements till January.

Take it for what it is. I'll wait as none of them worked anyhow.

I get different info each time I talk to them.
Good luck to all.
