This has been my favorite iPoddesgn wise ever. I hope they'll replace it with another one... My serial number isn't working though! 🙁
do i need to be the original purchaser or not. what if i am like the 4th owner. Will they still replace if it if I have one?
It will definitely be a first-generation Nano. If you do battery replacement on a first-gen Nano you get a new first-gen Nano as a replacement. They don't actually replace the battery; they re-cycle them. Which is cool because frankly, I think these things peaked with the first gen.

Exactly. It's not like they have warehouses of old crap sitting around for "just in case" events. My guess is that the replacement won't be any click-wheel type of nano and will either be current gen or previous gen nanos.
Yay! My wife's iPod was eligible (I'd have been very surprised otherwise, as I bought it on launch day).
I'm really curious as to what the replacement will be. My guess is that Apple has leftover stock of other previous generations (2G, 3G, et.c.) that they will send out.

It doesn't matter. I bought my Nano from Craigslist, and it went through the eligibility process. You can claim that it's a gift from somebody.

Come ON! How come my 2006 iMac is not eligible for a recall for the faulty video card I got with it? And my 2005 iMac was recalled, but the recall expired.
Yet there is a recall for the Nano.
Today, who even buys a Nano? It's $150, the price of an eBay iPod Touch, and is much worse.

Lost track of my 1st gen Nano but still have an iPod mini around that still works - wish it were a mini recall!

The title says it will take them 6 weeks to replace them. To me that screams, repair. They will maybe replace the cover polish the back and replace the battery. Plus a 90 warranty is Apples standard for a refurb.
In regards to the nano peaking the first gen, I like the 3rd gen best. I liked the square form with a click wheel. I used that most of all my iPods until I got my iPhone them I didn't need it anymore. Still got it somewhere.

I still have the first-gen iPod Classic from 2001 and the first-gen Nano. Letting the Nano go isn't too bad right? 🙄

Do you have any idea how many iPods they are going to receive and have to process? I think that's what's going to be taking 6 weeks - not the fact that they are going to repair each iPod. I wouldn't mind them repairing ... i just don't think that's the reason why it's going to take so long.

I may hold off with sending mine in. It's been my running buddy for years with Nike+ without a problem
OMG mine just died 🙁 But, well it's a 2nd generation nano. Anyways, it's going in the living room showcase. A truly beautiful product, which gave me years of happiness 🙂

From the email I received:
"You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen)."
This, to me, doesn't "scream repair". It states it will be replaced. Replaced = new unit.

If it were last year's (well, two years ago's) model, they might replace it with an identical model. We can all assume Apple keeps a large stock of unopened product from years past, but there is no way they produced one extra iPod for every iPod they sold. Forget about putting it back into production. It would be so expensive to produce all of those old models. The newer ones are smaller, use fewer parts, and don't have explosive batteries.

hmmm i wonder why mine says "The Apple product serial number you entered is not part of this program." even though i received it as part of the back to school promo back in september of '06 for free.
Well mine is not covered, even though it fits their requirements for replacement. How odd. My serial beings with 5U.....
I think we are getting new iPod nanos! I was getting ready to refurb mine and give it away lol Well I don't think apple is going to spend the time going through these. They are going to just ship us new 8gb nanos.
