Couple of details are making me think they will send a 1st Gen back, with a New Battery and maybe a new front and back panel.
Also gives Apple a chance to see what happens to iPods after 6 years with customers.
*The Japan replacement program gave people back 1st Gen's.
*The 6 week time. Surely it won't take 6 weeks to ship a non 1st Gen back to customers. Most likely 6 weeks to repair.
*The info page just says a replacement will be sent. It doesn't say a Non 1st Gen repalcement. Surely they would say if customers would be receiving a different model.
*Cost. Must be cheaper for a 1st Gen battery and maybe a new front/back panel than a newer model, refurb or not.
*Apple's Green cred. Must be more environmentally friendly to keep the 1st gen going than to scrap them and manufacture newer models.
*The 90 day warranty.

My nano doesn't hold a charge anymore so off to apple it goes. Anything is better than what I have now.

I didn't get an email. But I put my serial number in, and it says they are sending me a box to ship it to them. Mine still works great.

I hope the replacement ipods are the new nanos. If they are I'm going to go around town, buy up all the beat up 1st gen nanos for $20, send them in, get a box full of new nanos, sell em all on fleabay, and get a bajillion dollars.

Does this apply to every 1st Generation iPod nano, or will it cover only a certain range of serial numbers? I'm wondering because I currently don't know the exact location of mine and depending on the answer, I might hustle up my search for it.

My first gen Nano went through a wash cycle in my jeans. Still worked after, but it always thinks it's plugged into a power source, so it can't turn off. It just drains until the battery dies (which isn't very long). Been used in a speaker dock for a long time tho :D

I hope that by some miracle they send out a working refurb or one of the new ones. No nostalgia for me, I'd rather have a working nano to plug into my car stereo on a permanent basis!

Here in Japan, the program covered every first-gen iPod nano.

If I were you, I'd definitely try to find yours.

I just read this and I have a box on the way.

I hope that I'm not the only one here wishing for an iPhone Nano in the same form factor as this iPod. It's just a perfect size for running and such, and wouldn't require the anywhere near the full feature set of the 4S. Doubt it would make financial sense other than for a prepay though.

Are the 1GB models not eligible or something? I got mine in August 2006 and it's not eligible. It's the only thing I can think of that would stop it because they had a seperate release in Feb 2006

Like many, I hope they don't replace my nano with the new one. Love the build quality and the elongated design of the 1st gen.

Interesting, mine 1st gen. nano doesn't seem to qualify for this replacement program, although it overheats as well... :( :(

The website just keeps saying:

"The Apple product serial number you entered is not part of this program"

EDIT: According to this website: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html my iPod was made in 3/2006, so I am very curious why am I not eligible for a replacement...

Same story here. Mine is 2GB made in March 2006, bought in the czech republic. Why am I not eligible to get a replacement? I don't know!

Different battery supplier, I would imagine, since they stated it was a single supplier. And, of those, there were few defective units.

Apple often uses multiple suppliers for the same parts in their products.

Quote from Apple regarding the replacement program:

"This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect"

There were almost certainly at least two battery suppliers, and Apple seem to believe they have traced the defects to one particular battery supplier, if your Nano didn't have a battery from that particular battery supplier then it won't be part of this recall.

I just filled out the form. My other iPod's nano battery exploded so I'm sure it was one of the bad versions.

I just filled in the form. It's given me a label to print out, apparently Australia Post will provide me with a prepaid postal box when I go give them the label.

I'll miss my 1st gen nano (which I bought when they had just come out), but to be honest it has mostly just been sitting in a draw for years, I'm not even sure how well it holds a charge. If I get a new 1st gen back, I'll just give it as a gift to my Dad I think!

It's an out of warranty replacement so it's standard practice for Apple to give only a 90 day warranty regardless of the condition or model of the replacement. e.g. I had my iPhone 4 replaced recently. It was out of warranty and I got a brand new boxed replacement. Unopened with all the accessories etc. According to the serial number it was manufactured a week earlier. But still only a 90 day warranty.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one still using a 1st gen Nano. It's perfect for running with my Nike+.

I too hope I get a replacement with the same form factor. Otherwise my Nano armband is useless.

Well, my old little 2GB is eligible. It doesn't even power on any more, the battery I guess is long depleted. I remember back in the day when it would only charge to 4% :p

They just better fix the battery and that's all. I love this nano :\

old nano?

i can't locate my serial number the nano is nowhere to be found. how can i go about locating this? would apple send me a letter? i hope they have the info somewhere. its not as easy to just call my buddy either so i need another route.
