Apple Launching All-New CarPlay Experience in 2023 With These 5 Key Features

One of my neighbors got one about a month or two ago; it's pretty nice. I'd been considering a new X, but I won't get another Tesla until the new batteries (est. 500+ mile range) are out. A little birdie @ Tesla told me that's likely happening in 2023, but Tesla is hard to predict.
Not a Tesla fan — aesthetically, in my book — they are the opposite of a Range Rover :)

You can have all that functionality already (obv minus the extra displays) by putting a (won't say the brand name) device between your car's engine computer and your aftermarket stereo, if you want.
Oh, I'm sure, I prefer not to mess with that kind of stuff, as I'm no expert, and don't strive to become one. But yea — where there's a will there's a way :)

Yeah I totally get that. The X definitely grew on me over the years. However, I like my Model S a lot (style, speed, agility, capacity, tech, TCO, etc.), more so than any BMWs I had previously or have seen since. Just my preference. But to your point, I do *really* like the new RR design ... I think over the X. We'll see.

Does your car not come with FM radio? Also, who listens to FM radio?

Of course it does. And CarPlay forces me to exit CarPlay to adjust it… kinda the whole point of them adding it to CarPlay, and what should be the easiest thing for manufacturers to allow. But I doubt they will with any immediacy. And who listens to it? 92% of the population. It’s higher than tv viewership.

If the new Car Play implementation is successful this will probably serve as the beginning of the end of third party head units from brands like Pioneer etc. They're on their way to becoming obsolete, similar to Google Maps/Waze + iPhone basically rendering 3rd party GPS units from Garmin etc. obsolete.

All the Carplay integration from the FM Radio App to the HUD seems impressive. Hopefully it is bug free and does not bug out while the vehicle is in motion. The only thing I wish CarPlay had which I know Apple won't add is the ability to watch video when the car is stationary. Like if I'm parked waiting to pick up a family member, I should be able to watch youtube or some other video source... to kill time.

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait for 2030 model year for VW to adopt.
Considering Audi and Porsche are both VW Group brands and both called out by name in the list among “others,” I would be a bit surprised if VW didn’t see this integration in a timely manner. Especially since VW already uses digital instrument clusters in some of their vehicles (like my friends 2021 Tiguan).

The S is much nicer looking than the X, but still, yea. Totally a preference thing — I adore my '21 X3 and am sooo not looking forward to the new body that they'll be revealing shortly — from the spy photos I've seen it looks like ass.

Now we just have to hope that Car Manufacturers will jump onboard with major software updates so that we don't have to buy a new car every 2 years to get the benefit from new features.

The reality though is that we're going to get to start paying for individual features (both hardware and software) to get the benefit of using them, Thanks to industry pioneers like BMW... charging for premium features like heated seats and the like.

CarPlay would have added $1,500 to the price of my vehicle. I stuck with the standard (non-CarPlay) head unit.

It will be interesting to see what market share CarPlay gets over Android Auto. Will automakers be able to install both in their cars to allow consumers to choose after purchase? Or will automakers have to make two different versions of their vehicles forcing consumers to have to choose before purchase? Do automakers pay a royalty or licensing fee to apple to install CarPlay in their vehicles?

Is that a fact?
Do you know of any cars that have multi display support for any 3rd party, much less climate controls or something as vital as instrument cluster support. Some of the things like widgets and most likely fm radio will be supported on current/older models, the rest is just laying ground work for future models. Even then, it will only be a select handful of luxury models that will have the capabtlites for at least a few years.

I like CarPlay and use it all the time but I really, really prefer real dashboards and real knobs and buttons to activate things. It is so much easier to use when not looking and it is less distracting plus it doesn't cause you to lose night sight adaptation in darker situations.
CarPlay just runs off of what you already have right? At least it does in my car. If you have an infotainment system with knobs and buttons then it will utilize the knobs and buttons. I use mine all the time and it isn't any more distracting that not having CarPlay
