Don't worry, people like the poster below who has no idea how eyes work will tell you you're wrong.

Citysnaps, lets use some critical thinking skills for a moment. What happens when a person dies? Their pupil dilates, because the muscle relaxes. I know the user, who also has no clue what he's talking about that you initially were agreeing with tried to sound all intelligent by claiming constricted pupils were the eyes way of relaxing but he's wrong as well.

There are tons of people on here saying the same thing I am, dark mode helps their eyes. Stop trying to dismiss them.

OK, sounds like you're an expert on eyes, likely a doctor - if it floats your boat by all means embrace dark interfaces. Others know otherwise.

Choice is nice. This isn't choice, it is being spoon fed options when ever Apple wants to stir up some news reporters.

Imagine if the only new ios/macOS feature was dark mode theme.

Wait what do you mean? You said it isn’t a choice then in the same sentence you say it’s an option.

If this is integrated you can be assured it’ll be an option just like the rest of the option in the general pref pane.

How about spotlight?

From the people under my care nobody uses it. Must be funny folks you take care of ;-)

Wait so there’s a “cool” way to launch apps now? You aren’t cool if you use launchpad? Hahaha lol

Seeing how as my optometrist told me to use dark interfaces where possible many years ago for the reasoning I stated above, I'm going to go with her advice and never listen to someone like yourself who isn't an optometrist and literally, not figuratively, has no clue what they're talking about.

I'm done here, you're not worth my time. Why you're so angry over dark mode is beyond me.

Ah, playing the "you're angry" card now because you're out of gas.

I much prefer light interfaces as they're easier on my eyes and cause less fatigue. To each his/her own.

Poor imagination then.

Launchpad= pinch touchpad, type first few letter of app name, enter! Simple

So you have to pinch the touchpad, then move your hand to the keyboard, type the letters of the app, then press enter.

Why not instead hit Command + Space Bar at the same time, type the letters of the app, then press enter?

Your hands never have to move off the keyboard.

Huh. That can't be right, can it? Seems to completely contradict my own experience where mostly white content on screen at night is clearly and obviously much better at illuminating a room than dark content if you leave the screen brightness unchanged.

The power of the backlight is the same regardless of the color on screen or how they project in your room. The difference to your eyes shouldn't matter much if the GUI is light or dark. The brain adapts to these differences. The backlight's constant power means this isn't the same issue as observing light or dark scenes around you in the real world.

The power of the backlight is the same, yes. But not how much light makes it past the LCD panel.

Example: take a display, and calibrate it so that white is 120 nits peak brightness. Then, display black on the screen and measure the amount of light coming out of the screen. The result is nowhere near 120 nits, it's more like <1 nit.

The brain certainly adapts, but as another poster pointed out on this page, the pupil constricting requires the iris muscles to contract. And it does it in the presence of light, because your brain is telling it that there's too much. Generally what causes eye strain is too much light causing the pupil to constrict, and your iris muscles never getting a rest from that contracting state. i.e. they never get a chance to relax.

That said, if someone's white UI is blinding, odds are their backlight is set too high for the conditions where they are at the time. I got a lot of eye strain when I ran my screens "hot" at 300+ nits. After doing more photography work that required a calibrated screen, I tend to do everything at 120-160 nits these days indoors. And I have far fewer issues than I used to with eye strain.

When Dark Mode is announced on Monday we will see Johnny leave his seat. This will go against everything he has set forth in bright white.

I'd be thrilled to see a system-wide dark theme for macOS. Easier on the eyes, and it sure would look great with a lineup for professional level products.

Really hope  does incudes the dark mode with option toggle it off, so the whiners stop whining.
Dark mode IS not good for your eyes and looks fugly.
All books, documents and what not are written on white paper with black letters not the other way around.
Dark mode is nonsense and so Android.

A dark file picker and dialog boxes would be nice when running a dark/neutral app. Miss that from the days of theming Tiger and older Macs.

So they change about 3 RGB values and we are supposed to be excited?

Feeling sad now the MAJOR announcement of the whole conference has been spoiled. Just the minor bits to release now. Yawn. Apple is the new Microsoft: micro-incremental changes passed off as Earth-shaking upgrades. Sure we dont have to pay for them but some substance wouldn't hurt.

Laughed hard this morning when the TV news pre-empted Apple weening us off digital devices. This isn't news. They've been weening people off their hardware for years with the slow or non-existent hardware upgrades. Mac Mini? "Still important to us". Hahaha. They should hold that up as the perfect example of weening people off their hardware!

This is super awesome news

Have wanted a dark mode for a long time!

More important to your productive day than say faster hardware?

Howfunny Launchpad is still there ... does this anyone really use?

First thing I do when setting up a new system is to drag the Applications, Utiities, Documents, and Downloads folders into the dock and use them as I have since Snow Leopard (my first hackintosh version)

I've never understood the fascination for dark mode. At 62, my eyes don't focus nearly as well as they used to, and having a bright screen makes my pupils smaller thus increasing my ability to focus.
At 58, I completely understand. I lost any fascination with dark mode 5 or 6 years ago.

Mojave? They are going to use Microsoft Vista?

I'm guessing during that "Mojave experiment" that Microsoft didn't ask them to bring their existing printers or any other piece of existing hardware that required driver support.

Actually, the reason why writing was done with darker colors on lighter paper is that it's easier to manufacture (or make by hand back in the day) media that is light and it's easier to make inks that are dark instead of white. Dark is more relaxing to the eyes to many people and "fugly" is subjective.

The rumor is that this year will be software only event. So it not an interest to me since I never update my iOS in any of my iPhones, iPads. Total worthless event for myself and other Apple fanboys!

Why can't they leak this with DELL and FRY's components to make me upgrade my MacPro....

Sadly if they built a tower box with modern OTS components... I'm paying....

I may be in the minority, but I'm not a huge fan of the dark mode. I see it all over the place, so its certainly a popular theme

Some of us who spend a considerable amount of time working in front of a computer screen are excited about dark more.

What's so exciting about it is the fact that considering how many years it has taken Apple to implement it into macOS, it has to be something out of this world, and not just a matter of inverting colors. (Otherwise it may turn out to be a huge disappointment).

Do you get out much? Can you stand the light of the day? I'm not trying to be funny, but 300 nits is nothing.

I think your problems may come from screen flicker. This is less common these days, but certainly still exists.

Eye strain itself is not caused by activity of the iris muscles (which has both dilators and constrictors, BTW). The most important contributors are the ciliary muscle tiring from attempting to focus on hard to focus objects, and screen flicker. The former is alleviated by bright light, the latter is aggravated by bright screens if they do flicker at all.

I think dark mode is way overdue, and although I don’t agree that dark mode is better or worse than the light interface we have been used to, it will give us the ability to switch between modes to suit different working conditions.
