I just don't see why the heck they wouldn't do this.

Probably for all the similar reasons that led them to decide against selling Apple-branded TV sets. They don't want to be in the business of selling bulky commodity products where "Apple brand" adds limited value.

Not all is lost though. When they refresh 5K iMacs with TB3 - you might be able to use one in target display mode, as a dumb screen for your rMBP.

The counter point would probably be that Apple's never made TV's or anything even close to that size/function etc, whereas they've sold Mac displays for years and they have always added exactly the type of end to end value, feel & quality Apple prides itself on.

Additionally, they make the iMac still.

I think most of us would just like something similar to an empty iMac basically...same panels are fine, etc. Just something official and beautiful to be a docking station/hub for MacBooks.

I think the Thunderbolt Display was a major failure that took them literally years to drain out of their inventory (which is why they never discounted it - the longer they sat in a warehouse, the more they cost in terms of inventory overhead). So they knew an Apple-branded 4K or 5K monitor would also sell very poorly and even with the "Apple Tax" would not generate sufficient margin to make it worth the effort.

I'm glad they partnered with LG on this and I hope they do more partnerships like this. How cool would it be to be able to buy a "Made for Apple TV" television, where you plugged in your ATV and it just worked. There could even be an App that replaces all the normal garbage TV interface.

I also really like the 21.5" offering. Finally a 4k monitor with over 200 DPI. But I do wish the only differnece between the 4k and the 5k were the size and resolution. Having to sacrifice ports, camerea and 10-bit color to have two screens isn't cool.

I'm waiting to read the reviews of this monitor and for it to become available. AFAIK it is supposed to be available in December, but we all know how that goes in realistic terms could be months after that, I just read the AirPods are supposedly delayed to January 2017, sigh.

Looking forward to new MacBook Pro delivery towards the end of this month but not quite sure how I'm going to use external monitors with the new machine tho...

you can use a monitor with USB-C like the LG 27UD88W

But it doesn't have TB3, doesn't make sense to buy new monitors for a month or two. Sadly, probably have to purchase dongles to use my existing ACD24 and ALED27 monitors.

Apparently this has a webcam, which is really nice for people like me who video conference many times per week from the office. I am actually kind of excited about this display. If I can add a usb-c dongle to the back for ethernet and have one usb-c/thunderbolt connection to a Mac, I might get one. The bigger question is whether or not my top end 2015 15" rMBP can drive 5k over a thunderbolt connection with the T2-T3 dongle from Apple?

your 2015 is only TB2 and this display only has one TB3 input. Your mbp cannot drive a 5k display over a single TB cable. I don't see how any non TB3 machines can drive this display.

Darn. Thanks for the info Outrigger. Buying a new rMBP is out of the question. I guess this is off my list for awhile. Oh well.

Fingers crossed. I'd sooner buy three iMacs than one iMac and two of these ugly as sin displays.

Trying to figure out if there's any way to use the 4K monitor with another display and keep the single connection to the MBP.

I am guessing MBP-->4K display -->USB C to Displayport won't work because it's UBS 2.0, and OS X doesn't support displayport daisychaining?

Well, two days after saying this, I did this... :p

It seems no Apple displays are coming, and I still have a suspicion this pricing was an error, so I put an order in just in case.

If the 5K becomes available I will cancel and go for that.

Yes, I still think these displays are ugly as sin, but with no alternatives and a 25% discount, I have little choice!

(Note shown price is before 20% sales tax).

do i have to have thunderbolt 3 to use this monitor? Or would I be able to use an adapter and use it with my PC?

I just don't think I could buy a monitor and only use it with my laptop.

- Not buying that at all. The 5K version does 5 Gbps USB-C and 85 W. The 4K one could, too.

It stems from the fact they opted to make the 5K one Thunderbolt 3 but not the 4K one for inexplicable reasons.

The reason is that the 4K one works with the 12" MacBook which is USB C only, not Thunderbolt.

you need TB3 to drive this monitor. Even if your PC has TB3, it might not work since this was designed for the mac as there are no physical controls for any type of adjustments. All adjustments are made in osx.

I just bought 13 inch MacBook Pro w/o touchbar. I'll be curious to read about its performance with the 5K LG display. I'd hate to buy this only to experience lag but with the price drop I'm tempted to pick up one up.

Would TB3 to TB2 work to drive this display?

Not the 5K. TB2 supports a single DP 1.2 stream per port while TB3 supports two. 5K monitors require two DP 1.2 streams (hence older 5K monitors like the Dell have two DP 1.2 ports - each drives one half of the display like the old Dual-DVI days on the Apple 30" Cinema Display).

You probably could drive the 4K display with a single TB2 port using the TB3 to TB2 connector (a single TB2 port has the bandwidth).

Would it be possible to daisy chain one or more other displays with a usb-c adapter? That way it would be possible to have a multi-monitor set-up and connect it all with a single cable.

Darn. I want the display, but I want to hold off on getting a new MBP. Dang you Apple!
