That's a normal sized DisplayPort connector. If the monitor supports that then this one is fine, if not you need to look for the mini-DisplayPort version.

That one does not support by Apple LED and Cinema Displays that use mini display port. Since I have two, I'm looking for a USB C dock that has two mini display ports and some USB A ports as well.

If finding that is troublesome you may want to look for DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort adapters (those do exist).

It is tricky, especially because I'm not sure if they're compatible with my displays since they're not actually thunderbolt, they're Mini DisplayPort with USB and power, before Apple built new ones that have all three cables built in to the Mini DisplayPort and called it thunderbolt...

have my 15 inch pro in another country and get it in three weeks...

Gone from 38inch to 2x4k(27inch) to now leaning towards 2x5k due to just going for it and saves me buying an expensive dock...

anything wrong with doing this??? would i need to order them soon?? in UK and apple seems only one that sells them here...

Damn, then I'd have two Mini DisplayPort adapters and two Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapters as well?

It really is the age of the dongle...

The problem here is the availability of docks with mini-DisplayPort ports but the bigger issue is the display you are using. The docks I've seen all carry the normal DisplayPort connector which is bigger. The problem with the display you are using is that you can't simply change the cable, you are stuck with the one that is connected to the display. So you either need a dock with mDP ports or you need an mDP-DP converter so you can use one of the current docks.

If you had a display that had interchangeable cables you wouldn't have this problem.

Yea hopefully the LG 5k's will be available soon and then I'll be good to go...

And Apple would be charging you extra $300-$400 for the same glass in an aluminum frame with Apple logo slapped on it. And then you and others would be complaining about how Apple's hardware is so overpriced, and how you hate paying Apple tax.

Apple just can't win anymore - people will always find something to complain about.

And personally, I don't really see what's so "ugly" about this LG display. It's perfectly fine eesthetically, and functionally - it's everyone one can ask for in TB3 5K display.
I only they actually existed...

I was thinking of picking one of these up for my new MacBook 15" but I'd also want to connect my work laptop (Lenovo) to the same monitor for when I'm working from home. I don't care about getting anything near 5k resolution from my work laptop but I would want to have one setup on the desk where I could switch between the two computers. Would I be able to run this kind of setup or does the one thunderbolt 3 input cause issues with this? Like could I go thunderbolt 3 from the MBP into the 5k monitor (at 5k resolution) and say HDMI to USBC adapter in from my work computer to a USBC port (at say 1080 resolution) and switch between the two computers on the monitor?

I picked up a 4K monitor today, they're readily available in San Francisco area for pickup even though the shipping estimates are like 5 weeks.

It runs very nicely with my 13 inch TB, I was a bit concerned if the integrated GPU would smoothly handle this monitor. Since it does, I'm starting to wonder whether it would similarly handle the 5K? If so I figure I'll return this prior to the Jan return date and try to get a 5k.

no.

Thanks yeah I think I missed your post about not being to drive this even at lower resolutions. I figured I couldn't do it at 5k but was hoping I could at lower resolutions. Too bad I really would have liked to pick one of these up but maybe I'll just hold off a bit and see what else comes out.

So I'll just throw out one more crazy idea, what if you used Remote Desktop from the MacBook Pro to the windows work PC? Not sure if I could even get something like that to fly on getting that on a work PC but just theoretically could that work? So MacBook Pro Thunderbolt 3 to the monitor, MacBook remoting in to the windows PC and controlling and running things on the PC and sending the video to the monitor.

That will 100% work, but of course RDP always has a good amount of latency--so might not be ideal. Really highly dependent on your tolerance to lag.

of course that will work, but it does not translate to the same native 5k resolution that you would see on os x.

looks like apple doesn't want to sell the 5k at discount so they will open up the ordering after the discount expires.

if it doesn't go on sale, Apple HAS to push it further out. You can't have something on sale and not make it available to purchase. Thats like saying, Its free for a limited time but the stock actually doesn't exist until the free period is over.
