Even if this was some brilliant marketing ploy from marketing department do you think it would get past legal? Lmao think again bud. Not everything you watch on YouTube is legit.
Take a basic earth science course in college, and you'll also learn that hardness is not always a defining factor of a minerals composition.

The durability and hardness of the camera cover are extreme important to me, as the iPhone's camera is one of the biggest reasons for my purchase as well as one of the most-used features.
So with all this information that has been posted in this forum, are you going to buy one of the new iPhone7s?

Are you asking me to believe words rather than what im seeing? If the lens is scrathed deeply with a tool hardness 6 then the coating must be pretty thick.

Unless the tool was actually harder.

I see many saying it's an anti reflective costing.

Ok. What the point of a scratchable costing in a nearly un scratchable lends cover? It seems to me having a sapphire lens cover is pointless in a scenario like this.

Not saying I'm inclined to believe this guy (though he did provide video proof), but I feel like s costing defeats the entire purpose of using the material in the first place.

Happens all the time with watches.

Sapphire crystal, but many brands put anti-reflective coating to top of that to cut down on glare, etc to make it 'better'. Some do it on the underside of the crystal, some on both sides, some only on top.

I'm only interested in whether it's sapphire or not.

If it's not, people have cause to complain.

If the camera was your number one reason for deciding on a phone, you naught the wrong phone.

People schiller has spoken and it is sapphire. Lets end this discussion

If you want to beleive a youtuber over Schiller then I cant help you

https://twitter.com/pschiller/status/777178829290741761

Apple wouldn't screw something like this up. I wouldn't be shocked if they overestimated CPU speed or battery life. But a sapphire lens cover isn't the tipping point for anyone, and it isn't remotely supbjective.

I wish I could say I'm surprised that people are so quick to believe a YouTube video, but I guess that's the world we live in now.

There you go.

I would find it even harder to believe that he would double down on the alleged lie.

And it's agreed: most likely answer is that the youtube guy either messed up his test, or is outright lying.

That's the problem with a LOT of people of our generation: "I saw some guy on the internet say it, so it is true."

My favorite Reddit examples: the Boston Marathon Bomber ID; and Solar Powered Roads. The scary thing is the conviction of MASSES of people.
this!

And youtubers have been known to clickbait. If we get a scientific test from a known publication on multiple models that flatly disputes schiller then "maybe" the discussion can begin.

if a supplier lied to apple and screwed them over then that maybe unfortunate but it will be apples problem in the end not the supplier. even tho that is wrong

The material is synthetic sapphire that is used in the iPhone camera lens cover if that is important, and to process to cut both the cover glass and the camera lens cover is done with a beam shaping ultrafast laser.
There is an article about this process, in the August 2016 Laser Focus World magazine on page 52.

For me, this is enough response:

Though, additional explanation would be nice, it would be better to see a follow-up from same YouTube poster or independent verification/rebuttal.

I always put my phones in a case as soon as I get them. Did that with the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6 plus, 6s plus and now the 7 plus. I really liked the idea that I didn't have to worry about scratches on the camera lens since it's sapphire. One less thing to worry about!. If it is proven that Apple didn't use sapphire, I hope they get sued and fix it.

I'm guessing it's coated with anti reflective coating. Doesn't make sense for sapphire to scratch by a 6 rated hardness. Of course unless it's not sapphire. I own watches that have sapphire crystals coated with AR coating and it really isn't that hard to scratch the coating. Defeats the whole point of a sapphire crystal if you ask me!. I hope someone gets to find out what really is going on and take appropriate action if something is fishy. After all, my phone almost cost $1000!!!!!

Yes, I purchased a 7. VZW offered $650 for my 16GB iPhone 6, so I'm upgrading to a 128GB iPhone 7 for roughly $100 ($4 on my bill over 24 months). A random YouTuber driven by ad revenue which is driven by clicks which is driven by sensationalism doesn't deter me in this respect.

If the camera was your number one reason for deciding on a phone, you naught the wrong phone.
Perhaps you read my quote too quickly. Perhaps you don't understand the difference between "a major reason" and "number one reason." Perhaps you failed to consider that it's one aspect of a very easy and convincing ecosystem. Regardless of the reason for your misinterpretation, it's on you, not me.

It's unfortunate if you cannot see the difference between a faulty antenna design and accusations of outright perjury. Perhaps you're just being cute. Either way, I'm unamused.

hope someone starts a lawsuit
Ah, the American dream. People who quickly proclaim such statements make me nauseated. It's partially what has brought America to the choice of candidates we currently have, methinks.

It seems like an anti-reflective coating would scratch with even a razor blade, right? Why did it take up to the same level 6 hardness to scratch the coating which matches the front glass?

Also, I'm not sure why people are OK with this as long as its the coating thats scratched. Scratched is scratched right? Dont you want your lens unscratched so you can take good pictures? So if its the coating or the glass itself, isnt scratched scratched? So you should not be OK with any scratching, coating or otherwise.

Why? What would be the point of a frivolous lawsuit?
To teach big bad apple a lesson I guess. I don't get it either,
