Why would they release a new version of the iPhone 4 just a couple of months before they normally announce the new iPhone?

I doubt they will put all that development into a product with such a short lifespan whilst working on a newer model

Because Verizon and AT&T have different technology, and thus they need different phones. Verizon phone in Q1, AT&T in Q3.

So it has reception issues, the alarm doesn't always work and now it stops you going on vacation too?! What a failure. :p

(only joking, I love my iPhone).

well if true at least this indicates that Verizon customers will get the "apple shaft" because if they get iPhone 4 in february they'll feel the burn of seeing AT&T users with iPhone 5 this summer, poor bastards....

If Apple releases the iPhone 4 on verizon, the iPhone 5 will definitely come out on verizon as well. Apple may be willing to release the iPhone 4 by itself since they will want a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 as a low end version once the iPhone 5 comes out. Just like the 3GS is still sold.

If Apple introduces a new iPad two months after Christmas people will go nuts.

Then they're going to go nuts.

I say new CMDA iPhone next week and iPad 2 at MacWorld. Both shipping in February.

I just hope they get this Verizon thing behind us. As well as other carriers in the US.

That strikes me as logical. I see no reason for Apple to continue their yearly-only update of phones when most of their other products are updated more frequently. Now that competition is heating up, Apple would do well to move to a 6-month cycle, and this could be the beginning of that change.

You know...here's something people haven't considered...

I hear a lot of people talk about how other cell phone makers come out with dozens of handsets a year and yet Apple only has 1 new one per year.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Apple switched to a 'twice a year' plan? So we get the 5 now for Verizon and AT&T and the 6 in the Summer?

And forget about them being big huge changes like before...think of them more like Macbook updates. Just slight bumps every few months. So...yeah, by the time your contract is up you're 4 versions behind instead of 2...but so what? It's the exact same "2 years of technology" behind as you would've been otherwise. Looking at the big picture you'd be in exactly the same place.

What it WOULD accomplish is that the long "don't buy an iPhone!" stretch of april-may-june would be shrunk to a single month twice a year.

This would TOTALLY screw with the "I've gotta have the newest phone!" crowd...but frankly they deserve to be screwed with. The normal public would probably appreciate a system where they're never all that far behind no matter when they buy an iPhone.

Seeing as apple announced the iPad late january last year, this event and blackouts could be iPad 2 having avaliblility same day or very soon after the announcement. I think apple learned with demand of the first gen iPad and are prepared this time explaining the lack of 60-90 day gap till product launch.

So?... There's always new technology coming out from Apple, people should research before they buy a product at the end of its generation.

There's always the possibility that iPhone 5 is ready and coming to Verizon this February and to AT&T this June. iOS 5 doesn't necessarily need to ship with iPhone 5.

That'd definitely show AT&T how they feel about the iPad unlimited data plans.

And it'll come in white.

New mbp!?!!

Maybe a update to the MBP?? THAT would get me excited.

Cool if they announce the phone but everyone that has an iPhone4 is locked in a contract so it doesnt matter much to us. It will be nice when a lot of users switch and free up some of the ATT network for the ones left. If it helps then maybe I'll stay. That and unlimited data :)

One on One sessions

not available during that time in Portland, OR, not sure if this is related to Verizon iPhone or not ...

Lol what happened to the iPad 2? At least that is possible.

If they announce iphone for VZW, it doesn't mean it will be out soon. It could be an announcement that ends up with a launch during the normal cycle.

Also with iphone 3G and 3GS, I'm not convinced that the next iphone update/upgrade will be iphone 5...rather, another variant of the iphone 4.

The announcement could also include iphone and ipad for VZW, with mention of ipad 2.

Stop with the iPad 2 speculation. That CANNOT be the reason for restricting employee vacations. Those can be sold in seconds at the store, no problem. It's only a new phone on a new network that takes time to handle in the store.

That is a VERY good point. As much as I'd like this to be a sign of the new iPad I think NebulaClash is correct that this will be a new iPhone on a new carrier since it will require a lot more hand-holding when customer purchase one.

Not iPad 2. Would irritate ones that just got an ipad1 for Xmas ... Like me.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are posting here about what they WANT it to be instead of what MAKES SENSE for it to be. And you've hit on why people do it. They either want an iPad 2 (in which case "Dude, it's gonna be the iPad 2!!!!!!"), or, like you, they would rather it not be the iPad 2.

But this isn't about what we want.

What makes sense? What product would require extra time from the store employees? When in the past has Apple done this? Does it take more of their time to sell an iPad 2 than it did to sell an iPad 1 during the holidays? No. Apple can move iPads and iPods like crazy, either at the store or online.

No, the only thing that would affect employee time is something like a new phone. Even a Verizon iPad would not require extra time because on the iPad you buy your cell coverage yourself at home, with no contract required, no credit check at the store, etc. It's only the phone that requires more time from the employees.

Why would this be news that Apple is limiting their employee vacations? Does the internet get updates when Macy's limits the employee vacations during the busy holiday shopping season?

no one cares about macys or any other computer out there. Apple is in our hearts so we all care!!! haha
