It's that time of year where Apple releases new iMacs and there will be an introduction of the new iPad.

I'm willing to bet that the iPad will be the main feature of the presentation and the "One more thing" will be the new iMac with touch screen features.

CDMA Voice + Data

Did the simultaneous voice + data on CDMA thing ever get worked out?

If not I can't imagine Apple releasing a crippled iPhone that can't do what all iPhone users have taken for granted from day 1.

According to fedex I will ge getting my ipad on 1/11. If they announce the new one on the day I get mine.. that would suck.

I got a 32gb referb for 499. If the new one is worth the upgrade I guess I can return it since I am well within the return period.

We'll see what happens.

iPad 2 and here's why...

Those who bought the iPad for Christmas can NOT exchange it for iPad2 by 1/11/11. So there you go. It's for iPad 2 :)

That strikes me as logical. I see no reason for Apple to continue their yearly-only update of phones when most of their other products are updated more frequently. Now that competition is heating up, Apple would do well to move to a 6-month cycle, and this could be the beginning of that change.

Apple does not march to the beat of any drummer besides their own.

Apple is not going to fall into the trap that the Android based phones did. Releasing phones every couple of weeks to compete with their competition.

Apple didn't do this when the MP3 market became competitive and look at what happened.

Verizon is not going to get the iPhone this year.

But don't be surprised if T-Mobile does, since they already have it outside of the US.

well if true at least this indicates that Verizon customers will get the "apple shaft" because if they get iPhone 4 in february they'll feel the burn of seeing AT&T users with iPhone 5 this summer, poor bastards....

I know. I was trying to say the same thing a week ago on a different thread. unless Apple introduces iPhone 5 for GSM & CDMA at the same time, changing it's annual product launch time.

I'm hoping for iPad 2, but my gut says it is the Verizon iPhone. It seems to soon after Christmas for the iPad 2 to be available.

Available, probably not, but announced. iPad2 will probably be available in April.

Stop with the iPad 2 speculation. That CANNOT be the reason for restricting employee vacations. Those can be sold in seconds at the store, no problem. It's only a new phone on a new network that takes time to handle in the store.

That's a good point. Activations can be a hassle, especially for a new carrier.

I think it's interesting that no one ever considers the idea that Verizon may possibly get the updated model a few months earlier than AT&T gets it. Not saying that this is how it'll happen, but it's definitely a possibility.

Why not both? CDMA for verizon with faste processor, antenna changes. Faster processor and antenna upgrade for ATT. Lots of employees needed for that.

If they announce iphone for VZW, it doesn't mean it will be out soon. It could be an announcement that ends up with a launch during the normal cycle.

Also with iphone 3G and 3GS, I'm not convinced that the next iphone update/upgrade will be iphone 5...rather, another variant of the iphone 4.

The announcement could also include iphone and ipad for VZW, with mention of ipad 2.

iphone1 = original iPhone
iphone2 = iPhone 3G (because they added 3G network)
iphone3 = iPhone 3GS (S for Speed since faster processor)
iphone4 = iPhone 4 (because of lack of other way to describe it)
iphone5 = iPhone WhatEverTheyFindToDescribeIt

Sure. Allow even more potential AT&T customers to sit on their money and wait. Only this time, it won't be for a rumor.

Like that won't piss off AT&T... who will always be a major partner for Apple.

You guys really don't understand business politics and relationships do you?

The network can do it, it's the handset manufacturers that haven't. The spec was only passed a year ago but it works with the current network. No one is implementing it yet.

Actually, it appears that Apple is now separating their Mac and iDevice announcements.

It is more likely that the iPad 2 will get its own event. Also, the timing for a new iPad doesn't seem right. I'm guessing that they will announce iPad 2 in March or April.

Also, the iMac is not a heavily favored candidate for an update at this time. The notebooks (both the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines) are.

But I think there are lot of people(and count me in please) who are DYING for mbp update so it would be fantastic if it does.

At this point, I truly hope that apple will have event at all for next tuesday as I am getting sick of others announcing their stuff which I won't buy.

Also to those who say either they are angry or will anger others if ipad 2 gets released in early this year.. umm.. how do you think people who owns droid feels? At least ipad was out for 10 month.. I bought droid X.. and month later, finding myself already being old.... as in old technology...
With that logic, no product should get introduced in first 4 month of the year as it should not PO consumer since xmas is biggest shopping time

YES so trueee... i m also dying to hear about the update of MBP so i can hve the new MBP if its reviled in 11.1.11......:D

Yes, it's called SV-DO and apparently Qualcomm has a part for sale.

No handset manufacturer has yet marketed a phone using this chip. Would Apple be the first to do so? It's possible, although historically Apple has been quite conservative about which networking technology they implement in their handsets.

I wonder if the iPhone 5's biggest feature will be a 4.3-4.5" screen (since that is how the industry is going). I would wager that it would be called the iPhone XL.

And call the existing screen size the iPhone Mini? :D I'd be sticking with the Mini version, personally. Those large screens on the droid and whatnot are very nice but those phones are just way to big for my taste. I have small hands :)

This requires nothing on Verizon's network side? Manufacturer just utilizes the chip and it works?

Well if this happens they likely will have to make an announcement first that they are holding a media event. Given that today is already the 6th, and Thursday, that really just either today or tomorrow for Apple to make the announcement for the announcement.

If they don't make the announcement today, then making it Friday would leave all the media types scrambling with literally just a few days to get people to the event. Unless Apple plans on holding this announcement in house with only a few hand-picked media outlets, then the 11th seems like to quick of a turnaround.

So I am very skeptical at the moment. Not doubting this, just skeptical.

LOL.

First of all, iPhone users couldn't actually use simultaneous voice and data from day 1.

Secondly, there are millions of smartphone users on Verizon that seem to be doing just fine without simultaneous voice and data. The iPhone isn't going to suddenly change that.

Seriously, you people can't see the forest for the trees.

Q1: 1H: Verizon iPhone; 2H: iPad 2
Q2: 1H: MBs/MBPs, 2H: iPhone 5
Q3: 1H: iMacs, 2H: iPods
Q4: None usually, but last year was MBA

Apple is a business. They have to meet sales expectations. That can't happen if you just up and release everything new in January (and it's not like they can split their dev teams up so that releases can be timed to do that anyway). Bottom line: it's not "time" for a product update until Apple has a hole in the calendar. You would think after years of people bitching about "where's the MBP update?!?!??!?!??!" you would've figured this out by now.

Also, history shows Apple is not in the business of pre-announcing products once the product line has been launched. The iPad 2 and the Verizon iPhone will not both be coming out at the same time, and the iPad 2 will not be preannounced more than a week or two before it's ready for stocking. If we get anything at a Verizon iPhone presentation besides Verizon iPhone changes, it'll be an iOS 4.5 preview.

iPhone V

I think it's interesting that no one ever considers the idea that Verizon may possibly get the updated model a few months earlier than AT&T gets it. Not saying that this is how it'll happen, but it's definitely a possibility.

I think this makes the most sense. If the verizon Phone is the same as the iPhone 4, people interested in an iPhone on Verizon might hold off, since they may not want to sign a 2 year contract on a phone that won't be the newest generation in 4 months. But I don't think that many current iPhone 4 users would really mind if the iPhone V came out for Verizon in February, since they could upgrade on AT&T in June if they wanted to anyway.

I would hope that they would synchronize their update schedules in 2012 and beyond, but that may not be feasible from a production or logistical standpoint.
