I just turned off the spotlight search on the 3g with 4.x and it is much faster and smoother. Makes a huge difference.

my 2nd gen touch slowed down with ios4, and is slightly buggy (the latest update to iBooks appears to have helped its issues), but its no worse than 3.0 was.

Apple, creating reasons to upgrade since 1976

3gs

Same here. The camera is horrible, lag-jitters and blank screens just about everywhere I go but with no background apps running. I also notice the App Store and iTunes Store giving me blank pages, even while I'm in it for a few minutes. I restored 2 times with no change. Guess it has been hotter with heavier use and seems like the battery drains quicker.

I have a 3GS and 4.0.x has been horrible.

Performance has been a nightmare, and the bugs have been driving me nuts.

- Camera can take 10-60 seconds to load.
- Taking a picture can take 10-30 seconds.
- Loading SMS can take up to 10 seconds.
- Entering lots of text under SMS (>200-400 characters) will cause text "jittering" when I scroll up and down (to review, correct, or proof read text).
- Safari has rendering errors. Sometimes text changes size, form submission boxes (like when posting on Forums like this one) resize at random. Text may overlap and become unreadable.
- Sometimes a device using GPS ("Location Services") gets hung or something, and this drains the battery super fast. I'm talking 100% to 0% in an hour and a RED HOT iPhone from 100% CPU usage.

I upgraded to ios4 on my iPhone 3G and had it slowed down so much, overheated and crashed it was useless. I tried to revert, and couldn't. I thought I'd bricked it, but I put it into recovery mode, and reinstalled ios4, which worked, and then restored the last backup. The change was incredible. It was faster than it was before the first upgrade. My best guess is that there is a conflict of some sort, possibly some of the old OS modules aren't getting removed as part of the IOS4 upgrade. But wiping the phone and reinstalling cleanly def sorted it for me.

I failed with the iOS regression so I'm going through the recovery mode too. Hopefully I haven't bricked my 3GS and it comes back on top form!!

Similar issues..give 'em a chance to issues fixes

My iPhone 3G takes a full minute to boot with iOS4, used to be much quicker. Also the iPod is glitchy as hell - it refuses to play numerous songs loaded on the device, it just skips them every time I select them. iPhone 4 is great, figures.

In addition to issues with responsiveness and more frequent crashes, I am finding podcasts that used to play under v3 to no longer play under 4.0 on my 2G Touch. Much as you are experiencing with songs.

In a more quality-oriented world, we might expect that software that is promoted to run on hardware would run properly from the first release. But that is no longer the case with Apple, or anyone else, for that matter. Microsoft and Win 7 were, I think, and exception, as they were so embarassed by Vista that they did a good job with Win 7 right from the start (using the massive public beta). But other than that, the .0 release of just about all software has significant issues.

As far as I'm concerned, it is reasonable to give Apple a chance to fix things in 4.1. If it comes out in the next month or so, then they will have done an acceptable job relative to the current industry norm.

If the issues are intolerable, you're forced to either downgrade to v3, until you buy another device.

Eesh. I was all excited about getting 4.0 on the iPad.

3.x does the job so well I may just sit on that for a while.

MS's jab that iPhone 4 may be their vista is kinda humorous...

Turning spotlight off works!

I was having the same problems that resulted in a phone that slowly crawled. I get about 200 emails a day and by turning off the Spotlight indexing, it seems like I have a new phone!

The speed increase makes the phone usable again.:)

No problems here

Upgraded to 4.0 and 4.01 pretty much as soon as they came out. Worked perfectly with same battery use, no heat issues and although some of the Apple apps like sms and the phone take a bit longer to load, most others load faster.

Maybe cause I update my apps and dont run crappy apps from crappy devs that don't know how to code.

LOL - what total fanboy BS. I assume you're discounting the inherent design flaw included with every single one of them?

Given the release of all the new products the other day, this has continued to be an appalling month for Apple.

it's not a design flaw mine, and EVERYBODY I've spoken to has no issues

I still don't understand why 3G owners expect, no, demand that iOS4 run on their phone at all, let alone flawlessly. It's old hardware. Just like a 2 cycle prior mac is, regardless of purchase date, a 2 cycle prior phone is also old. They should look at this as a blessing; the fact that Apple even cared past 1-revision prior is a gift in it of itself. Personally, it would have been easier if they just didn't support it, and then we wouldn't have to hear about people and their expected entitlements so much.

There's too many people with a sense of entitlement, and not enough people with a shred of logic or reasoning.

But that's just me.

Dude. I don't think you get it. Apple pushes the iOS4 update on us. We can deny it, but they are knocking on our doors with the update every time we sync with iTunes. Also, the 3G may be 2 cycles old, but was being sold new by Apple with 2-year contracts with ATT just 1 year ago. So, those that bought it then, followed apples instructions and updated, now have to do more updating (drinking more of the kool-aid) over the next year, with the hopes that their machine will again work properly.

Entitlement---my ass.

This is EXACTLY how my 3G behaves running iOS4!!! I swear it was a cheap ploy to make me upgrade my phone to a 3GS, or iPhone 4. I can't keep using this thing. It's driving me nuts.

What an irony between your post and your signature!:D

Good. Apple completely screwed over iPhone 3G users with iOS 4. And there's no way that they didn't know this was going to happen before they released it, because I don't know of a single person who DOESN'T have problems with iOS 4 on the 3G. I'm sure they won't be able to get it running completely smoothly, but at least maybe the update will make it so that it doesn't totally destroy the phone.

I haven't seen many (any?) demands

Language a little melodramatic. I haven't seen people demanding that iOS4 run on the 3G phones, or 2G Touchs. I've seen people expecting it to run based upon Apple's assurances that it would run satisfactorily on their devices as long as certain features were disabled. So when they upgraded to the software with the subset of disabled features, and the devices ran poorly, they are either waiting for Apple to fix the software so the devices run as Apple lead them to believe they would run. Or they are downgrading back to v3.

If Apple does not fix iOS4 so the devices run satisfactorily, and don't withdraw their claim that it will run satisfactorily, then I guess those outside of warranty will have to live with the situation (or downgrade) and those of us still in warranty will have to decide if it is worth the hassle to press the issue with Apple. I have a 2G Touch with about 6 months left on Applecare. I will probably give Apple a chance to display their superior customer service.

it just doesn't work as well as it did

I've read a number of posts. I am one of those people who had a well-functioning 3G. I updated to iOS4 and my iPhone became much slower, the touch screen was not responding always, battery life was shortened. While I've had my phone for almost two years, it worked. I installed new software, at the recommendation of Apple, and, suddenly, my phone doesn't work as well. In fact, it is often frustrating to use. I took it to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store. They restored the phone, which helped some, but, still, the product doesn't work nearly as well as it did. The guy working at the Genius Bar told me flat out that the problem was the new software upgrade, that he was getting lots of 3G users coming in, and that the old software could not be re-installed. I am left with an inferior product, because of a mistake made by Apple. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that the situation be fixed. I'm not asking for a new iphone 4. I just want my old phone back. And no, I do not want to upgrade at this time. I am waiting until next year, when (if the rumors turn out to be true) I can get an iPhone 4 on Verizon. I think that all of us that would like Apple to fix something that they are responsible for is reasonable. I don't understand why others find this objectionable. I understand that companies make mistakes. That's fine. We all do. I just expect companies to correct the mistakes they made. Liking it or lumping it, as some posters seem to suggest, seems like a unnecessarily inconsiderate response. Why does it matter to anyone who is either not experiencing these problems or has made their peace with them that others who are having problems and would like them fixed are seeking a resolution from Apple?

OK, I just read the WSJ article. Looks like this topic only refers to the 3G, not the 3GS. In my case, my 3GS has been suffering from substantial slowdowns since I upgraded to iOS 4. Can anyone else corroborate this behavior with the 3GS?

Thanks.

My 3Gs feels generally faster with iOS 4 than it was on 3.1.2. If it is slow on your 3Gs then you definitely have some other sort of problem.

That is really REALLY weird, Xeonmorph. I have a 3GS and am having no problems - well, except that Atlantis Sky Patrol isn't running smoothly. Perhaps I'm not having problems because my phone was new in March?

I also take the time to manually clear the queue of apps that are running in the background.

I've experienced this too; haven't updated to 4.01 yet will probably skip until 4.1 (I do rely on a software unlock as I use T-Mobile).

Performance overall is pretty poor as others have noted. It gets worse with time, I generally do a hard reset every 2 or 3 days.

One thing which helped quite a bit -- I installed iMemory Enhancer. Beware that all it does is create a giant swap file on your phone, a RAMDISK of sorts. It most certainly will eventually kill the NAND flash chips as they have limited write cycles; I'm not concerned with this as I plan to update to a 3GS or a 4 in the very near future and extended life of the phone isn't a concern to me. I just need it to be USABLE for the time I need it. YMMV.

Turning off Spotlight Search is a good idea too, certainly will give a performance boost.

I'm hoping 4.1 will offer some substantial under-the-hood improvements to optimize operation on the 2G touch and 3G iPhone.

Reset and it worked fine

When I had my 3G it ran a lil slower when I updated it to ios4 but after I reset it ran faster then it did day ome out of the box. I was so happy with it that if I had to dropped it to it's demise I would have kept using it till it broke. (don't get me wrong love the ip4 and the screen is worth it alone, oh no reception/antennaissues). I know a few other people that had slow and buggy iphone 3g's and there all happy after the reset of the device. Also about the battery c'mon it's nit gonna be 100% especially if you had it for around two years how I did.

If you are talking about the antenna thing, very few people have had any real issues with it. The fact is, if you touch your iP4 in the naughty spot, you get better performance than most other smart phones. If you are talking about the proximity sensor, there is a problem. I was talking to a person once and the phone made a sound like I was hitting the 8 button. Again, not much of a big deal.

Unlike the antenna issue, the 3G does appear to be causing people issues. The solution would be to give 3G users an easy way to downgrade until they can strip some clock cycles from the OS.

Try a DFU restore and set up as a new iPhone, I know this sucks but my 3GS runs like BUTTAH now. :)

I am part of the people who's 3G phone is so slow it's making it crash all the time. I can't even put a contact on my phone because it's so slow, it's always crashing even on Wifi. Applications don't even open.
