The video shows exactly how iPhone 3G behaves once upgraded to iOS4. I did with mine, resisted a full week. Then downgraded back to OS 3.1.

Now it's working flawlessly. Just lost some appointments in my Calendar, as well as some pictures and few messages that were created after the last backup.
Actually, I don't miss the iOS 4: I could not get customed to the grammar corrector, I was making a lot of mistakes writing (could not figure out whether this was due to my mistakes, of the slowness and unresponsivity of the iPhone).

Anyway, I've to say that, at least for the 3G, I could not find any real improvement with iOS4. Slowness a part...

What do you mean that they're looking into report of iPhone 3G being slow as hell? They knew about this the whole time, or are you telling me that Apple didn't even bother to load a version of iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G while it was under development?

Original iPhone and first generation iPod Touch should get iOS 4 too. It has the same bloody specs of the iPhone 3G.

The people at work with 3Gs are all frustrated that things are so much worse with iOS 4. One of our developers describes his as unusable. Our many second generation touches aren't performing too badly, but unless you remember to turn on Airplane mode, the batteries run dry overnight.

Out of the three 3G users I know who have "upgraded" to iOS 4, three (me included) have had the same issues. Exactly like on that video. We measured it, and they were consistently within 1 second in speed from each other on every task (like opening iPod app, etc...)

those of you wishing to downgrade 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.2 need to find a place to download the appropriate device firmware from somewhere on the web, then when the iPhone is plugged in, hold down the option button when clicking on restore.

point to appropriate firmware file and viola. restored to said firmware.

This is EXACTLY how my 3G behaves running iOS4!!! I swear it was a cheap ploy to make me upgrade my phone to a 3GS, or iPhone 4. I can't keep using this thing. It's driving me nuts.
You only prove my prior statement. A sense of entitlement. Yes, you can keep using this thing, and no, you don't need to get a 3GS or 4; why don't you try using the software that came with it? Just an idea here...

Or, if you're really adventurous, JB it and get all the features of 4 with an even lower overhead...

Apple should have not let 3G owners install IOS4 but I supposed they would have gotten complaints on that too.
Yep. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I personally think they were being nice, but clearly people don't understand hardware limitations.

That's just it: The iPhone 3G was released in July of 2008. Two years. That's the standard length of the contract that you sign with AT&T for service! Surely it's not out of line to expect a device to be fully supported for as long as you are required to continue to pay for its use.
Yes, I could understand this argument, but there's a few reasons why I don't view it as valid, and why anyone complaining is simply being unreasonable and selfish.

1) July 2008 -> July 2010 (now almost august) = 2 years. Sure, you may have gotten your phone after that, but you could even get a 3G in 2009 if you were cheap. Where do you draw the line? I think 2 years from initial release is PLENTY of support, especially since TWO models have been released since then.

2) You may have signed up for a contract for 2 years, but you can always upgrade your phone by the mid-point. The 3GS and 4 upgrades are fully available, so there's really no excuse, except if you're changing carriers.

3) Just because the latest software designed for the latest phone doesn't run on your (twice!) older phone doesn't mean it doesn't function. Sure, it may not be "fully supported," however, more importantly, it WORKS. Use iOS 3, not 4, and enjoy software actually designed for your hardware. Apps will continue to work, and I don't see iOS 3 support being dropped instantly either. View it more as a traditional OS change; as time progresses less support will exist for your software. I don't think this is unreasonable to expect at all, especially given that this is how things work for computers.

ABOUT A FRIGGIN' TIME!
If only you realized what was wrong with this.

I upgraded my 3G and it was much slower but not unusable. It was frustrating though! Now I have the iPhone 4 and LOVE it :)

Slow...

Add mine to the list. I thought I had done something wrong after I downloaded it because of how slow it was. I went into the apple store and asked if they would downgrade my phone...no success there though.

Who, didn't know there was that many people with the same issues. Lags are terrible and texting is slow when sending. I would love to downgrade! How is that done?

Apple should have not let 3G owners install IOS4 but I supposed they would have gotten complaints on that too.

I disagree, they cut a lot of iOS4 features out. I mean the iPhone 3G really just got folders, new mail and contact layout, and the option to turn cellular data off. Those features should not cause the lag that people are experiencing. Also the install I performed was a restore and then I set it up as a new device, so their are no old configuration files on my old 3G.

I have to admit, the video was clever. I was unaware of the issue beforehand. Hopefully Apple addresses it soon.

For someone to have made that, time placed into the production could have gone into gone into something more profitable that could have earned him an iPhone 4. Be happy there was an upgrade!

Thats not the point. The point is the phone is unusable with iOS4. I have an iPhone 3G. I can afford to get a iPhone 4G with two hours work. His point is not invalidated because you feel that if he worked harder he could upgrade.

We all love apple but you have to recognize when they screw up. I had to downgrade my phone so it was usable again.

The video left out iCal

My iPhone 3G functions exactly like the iPhone in this parody. The phone is slow, iTunes is slow, Safari, etc.. The only thing the parody left out was the iCal. When I run the calendar, it shows that there are no events at all, but after 3 seconds, suddenly you can see and click on your events. There shouldn't be any lag with opening up iCal! I seriously regret my decision to update my phone to iOS 4.

They better fix this or offer a downgrade path. My 3G has been rendered almost useless. I constantly want to throw it at the wall because it just KEEPS freezing! Rarrrrrrrgh!

Apparently disabling spotlight search helps

Anyone want to try and report back?

I can confirm by my, and a friends behalf, that totally disabling spotlight search DOES work. It´s like having a brand new phone after doing it. Sucks that you have to, but didnt use it that much anyway.

It is not a universal problem!

Hey I have a 3GS and I have been using IOS 4 and it runs very well. I have noticed no slow down. I would strongly advise anyone upgrading to to a full reset and restore of the phone after upgrading to give it a good clean start. But this is obviously an issue that is affecting some people only.

With the multi-tasking you have to be sure not to leave anything running for hours like TomTom Gps etc.

best thing for people to do is to reset the phone and if the problem persists e-mail apple so they can get working on a fix..

Since IOS4 is having the problems it is on the G, it's logical that a lot changed internally that you are not aware of. IOS4 was written to take advantage of the faster processor / more RAM / etc. in the newer phones and it really shouldn't have been released for the G if people have expectations of it running like the previous version.

I would rather they just officially declare no iOS4 support for the 3G, but it's probably too late for that. It takes a decent experience to horrible and borderline unusable.

But they really need to find a way to decouple the screen rotation lock from multitasking, that's just ridiculous. Even if it's a separate app you run to toggle it, it would be useful.

I never really thought about it, but I do have a 3G that I use sometimes and it is really slow at times.

Sometimes when going into the iPod and back out it takes forever.

And one app never loads.

So I would say yeah, 4.x does seem to work poorly on a 3G

I will have to check it again.

Jailbreak it

Much of this applies to the iPod Touch 2G as well. It's actually a good reason to go back to 3.1.2 and Jailbreak your device. You'll get multitasking and a whole lot more and you won't have battery drain or excessive heat in my experience.

I upgraded to ios4 on my iPhone 3G and had it slowed down so much, overheated and crashed it was useless. I tried to revert, and couldn't. I thought I'd bricked it, but I put it into recovery mode, and reinstalled ios4, which worked, and then restored the last backup. The change was incredible. It was faster than it was before the first upgrade. My best guess is that there is a conflict of some sort, possibly some of the old OS modules aren't getting removed as part of the IOS4 upgrade. But wiping the phone and reinstalling cleanly def sorted it for me.
